Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, has urged the National Assembly (NASS) to assist the Aviation Ministry by passing a supplementary budget to provide Air Field Lighting (AFL) and resurface the 2.4 kilometres Benin airport runway.
Oshiomole made this known on Friday at the commissioning of the remodelled Benin airport Terminal in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Benin Airport currently operates visual flights; 6 am to 6pm because AFL has not been installed at the airport and the Governor said with that installation the airport can attend to flights for 24 hours where necessary.

Oshiomole, who decried what the airport used to be, said while the passenger traffic of the airport continue to increase; the facilities that were put in place in the 70s were never replaced or upgraded, adding that today Benin airport is not only wearing a new look but has been provided with modern facilities.

Oshiomole added that what the Aviation Minister, Stella Oduah has done has not only shown that she is from the private sector, but also that people from the private sector are good at maintaining facilities.

He said: “What the Minister of Aviation has done shows that so much is possible if a leader is focused and clear of what he wants. We are here to celebrate a woman who believes our airports needed to be remodelled to be able to compete with other airports across the world.”

Speaking to journalists in Benin airport shortly after the commissioning, Odauh said that work will soon commence on the Benin airport perimeter fence andthe road.
She commended the state government and the people of the state for the support it has been given to the airport to make it what is today, adding that their supports have gone a long way tomake the airport a success.

Oduah said aside from the general policy of the Federal Government to modernise all airports in the country, in compliance with existing international standards and practices, the Benin Airport was accorded priority under the Airport Remodelling Project because of its potential for growth in scheduled flight and cargo operations, considering its proximity to major industries in the Niger Delta and farm settlements in Edo State.

On the airport that will be commissioned next after Benin, the Minister, said eight remaining airports in the first phase of the project; Yola, Jos, Enugu, Owerri, Kano, Kaduna, Calabar and Port-Harcourt International Airport would all be commissioned by August this year, about the same that the second phase of the project, involving the remaining airports in the country, would commence.

I have known that some APC governors are secreatly supporting GEJ. Chiefly among them are Ibikunle Amosun obj errand boy oshiomole and half of the APC governors.

I am satisfied that something useful was done at the Benin airport having heard from someone trustworthy.

I hope PDP and the goons roaming all over the place behave like Oshiomole -focus on performance and comment accordingly. Oshiomole took Maku to school for his yeye governance tour but did not hesitate to commend this project.

Balance is what we need in Nigeria. Nobody should sell Nigerians snake oil or attempt to speak evil of clear excellence just because the gov. responsible is in APC.

Stop the lies e.g. the incessant completion of the Benin-Ore road. It simply paints the rest of your message bad.

Hmm, from electricity to improving transportation (airports, river channels, and even seaports, revamped trains for cargo haulage, etc), slowly but surely, we're getting there.

Those evil men that prayed fervently that this airport should not be commissioned can now bow their head in shame. .

My friend, the Benin-Ore road is not a 2km road. The total distance of the road is about 145km and its divided into different sections. When people talk of completion of Benin-Ore road, they imply completion of certain sections of the road, which in actual sense is PROGRESS in the ongoing re-construction. Therefore, you may continue to hear about ongoing works on the road until the whole 145km is completed.
