Forget Pact With Govs, Jonathan Is PDP’s Sole Presidential Candidate For 2015, Clark Tells Northern Govs

President Goodluck Jonathan’s kinsman and Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark again stirred the hornet’s nest today when he released a letter to Northern governors in which he urged them to forget about any agreement reached with them by Mr Jonathan on a single tenure term of office. He declared emphatically that the ruling PDP has already imposed Jonathan as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the 2015 election.

In the letter dated 12th March, 2013 and addressed to the Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu who is also the Chairman of Northern States Governors Forum, Clark said the president can no longer keep to the agreement since the Northern states had breached it during the 2011 presidential elections by voting for the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change [CPC], General Muhammadu Buhari
.

He warned in the letter, a copy of which was obtained by iReports-ng.com in Abuja today that , people of his south south region will not fold their arms and allow a section of the country intimidate President Jonathan over the 2015 elections. Relevant portions of the letter is reproduced below:

“I wonder what makes the issue of President Jonathan contesting the 2015 presidency a mere speculation, according to you. The 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for two tenure of four years each after two democratically conducted elections. Apart from the illegality of the purported agreement with the northern states governors, such a mindset violates the letter and spirit of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

“There is no speculation that the PDP is planning to impose President Jonathan as the sole candidate of the party in the upcoming convention. The practice in democratic presidential system of government is that an incumbent president remains the sole candidate of a political party at the party’s convention, if he or she is willing to contest for a second term in office. This is the practice in the United States of America from where Nigeria copied her own model of presidential system of Government.

“My dear Governor, you may wish to find out whether any candidate in the Democratic Party in the United States of America contested the Primaries with President Bill Clinton when he decided to stand for a second tenure. Again find out whether any Republican Party faithful contested the Presidential Primaries with George W. Bush when he desired for a second tenure and recently whether any Democratic Party member contested with President Barrack Obama when he offered for a second tenure in 2012.

“Similarly, when the American type of Presidential system was adopted in Nigeria in 1978/1979, former President Shehu Shagari was the sole candidate of the National Party of Nigeria [NPN] when he chose to run for a second tenure in the 1983 presidential election. Or do you think there was dearth of qualified candidates in that era? Note that in the words of Dr. K.O. Mbadiwe, “the NPN had many men of timber and caliber who were ready to contest the Presidential Primaries if Alhaji Shehu Shagari had not indicated his intention to contest.

“The list is endless. In 2003, it was only through the instigation of some Governors led by Chief James Onanefe Ibori who were disappointed that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar stepped down for his boss, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that Dr. Alex Ekwueme was persuaded to contest the presidential primaries against the party’s decision. However, he was defeated by President Obasanjo who had the party’s blessings. Many Nigerians will recall the reverberating rendition of “Obasabjo, Obasanjo, Obasanjo…, E-k-w-u-e-m-e” from Chief Tom Ikimi’s voice at the Eagle Square during the vote counting at the primaries.”

While describing as utter nonsense, claims by some Northern leaders that Jonathan had already run two terms, Clark said: “In other words, the late President Yar’ Adua was entitled to eight years in office but Dr. Jonathan is entitled to only a single term contrary to the 1999 constitution. Is that not double standard? What a shame!

“We can no longer tolerate this. Our centenary celebration is based on the equality of all citizens and we must be tolerant of ourselves now more than ever before. In all civilized democracies where the majority and minority ethnic groups exist, it has never been the prerogative of the majority ethnic group to lord it over the minorities. For instance, in Great Britain from whom we got our Independence, there are the English, the Welsh and the Scottish. The English are the majority, followed by the Scottish and then the Welsh. Each of these ethnic groups has produced the Prime Minister of Great Britain based on the quality of the candidate. In fact, in recent times the Scottish has come to produce more Prime Ministers than the English who are the majority.

“As a people we must remain united and be patient to wait for our turn and not to harass and intimidate an incumbent president to abandon his constitutional right to seek a second term in office as provided for in the 1999 constitution, just because he is from the minority. Enough is enough my dear governor.

“For the umpteenth time, it must be emphasized that Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians as enshrined in the nation’s constitution. All Nigerian citizens are equal and can all aspire to the highest office in this country and should remain in office in accordance with the constitution.”

One has got to admire Papa Clark doggedness on this issue, but it is clear his memory is no longer what it used to be... cheesy

For the record, the democratic primaries of 1996 did pitch Lyndon LaRouche against Bill Clinton.

In the 1996 Democratic presidential primaries, he received enough votes in Louisiana and Virginia to get one delegate from each state, but before the primaries began, the Democratic National Committee chair, Donald Fowler, ruled that LaRouche was not a "bona fide Democrat" because of his "expressed political beliefs ... which are explicitly racist and anti-Semitic," and because of his "past activities including exploitation of and defrauding contributors and voters." Fowler instructed state parties to disregard votes for LaRouche.

And while we are it, what about Pat Buchanan vs Bush in '92?
Harold Stassen vs Ronald Reagan in 1984?
Ted Kennedy vs Jimmy Carter in 1980?
Ronald Reagan vs Gerald Ford in 1976?
Ashbrook vs Nixon in 1972?

One thing I have always admired about the South-south is that when the need arises they always stand in for their own, I hope these funky mallams will just keep quiet for once and face their destinies! What their leaders couldn't achieve in 38 yrs of misrule is what Jonathan is fixing all within 2 and half years, what a real waste of energy on their part. Agreement ko, disagreement ni! cool

Sometimes I read with amusement some comments made by supposed Nigerian youths, I really want to believe majority do not share your beliefs, hopes and may be expectations.
Its saddening Nigeria has degenerated into an ethnic cocoon across its various geopolitical zones but as much as I detest commenting on ethnic-sectional topical issues as this the issue of Nigeria is worth discussing however in a more intellectual way.
I don't think a break up through wars or any form of civil strife or confrontation is what will solve Nigeria's problems or make life better, after all you never can tell the type of leaders that will rise;imagine today governors buying super luxury cars et al.I think Nigeria can look toward a COMMONWEALTH FEDERAL REPUBLICS structure in which we will have large and small entities the number of which will be determined by the desire of the people themselves to forge a common nationhood.I think for the major ethnic groups to easily merge into regions will be easier than getting a number of smaller groups form a super structure, but this is also achievable though through negotiations.
If I can deduce,it may therefore for cultural and economic reasons be easy for Yoruba & Igbo people to form superstructures but there will still be flash points when considering claims and counter claims in states like Delta(depending on what decisions are taken by such groups as Olukunmi, Itshekiri, Ijaw,Akoko-Edo, Anioma, Isoko and Urhobo regarding their own affiliations or self determination)The Hausa/Fulani do not own the entire Northern Nigeria as it is the make belief of some online commentators but it will be challenging having an Hausa/Fulani region as it will not be as easy as the time od the Sardauna.Political differences has played a wider role in splitting the northern mind over the years and you can expect series of discords which will take long years to resolve. Then we will be confronted by how the remaining groups of Middle Belt and Niger Delta will organize themselves if we can have the greater Kanuriland in the North east to be a region.
While it may look so easy now that Niger Deltans can forge a region, but with massive corruption in Nigerian system already working also in that region we may have a hell of massive disputes. I think the Ijaws deserve and will get a region of their own but will be surprised by their new much reduced map, many groups will rise to lay claim to oil fields and they may be force to be contented with areas where they have landmass to support their maritime claims.
More importantly will be the challenges to be faced by groups a s the Ikwerre, Ogoni Bonny and co unless they merge with bigger groups and forge their own semi autonomous communities or principalities or Nigeria may end up with over 250 of such divisions.
If however such small groups should negotiate their autonomy within a larger groups arranged into a workable unions , we can have as low as 15 regions. By allowing for economic and resource control across regions will immediately skewed the map into wealthy and poor regions but through a levied mutually agreed federal tax the central government can give aids to perceived poor regions. This system I believe will trigger serious competitions across the country and it will also give people or cultures leverages across the commonwealth to assert themselves. There is nothing wrong with for instance an Hausa/Fulani region to run a sharia system or a region to pursue a socialist -welfare state while other going with capitalism, no one will teach monkey to peel banana after all Cuba is today venturing into private ownership of businesses, economic challenges will cause many to change their systems over time.
Nigeria will be better rather than any Biafra or whatever name is being proposed. I think proponents of any republic can forge themselves into an autonomous region, after all we can have a Biafra Region in Nigeria, Hy not? it will at least save us money in propagating wars and add to our developments.
