The Chairman of the Edo State Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), Lucky Imaseun has debunked claims that the programme is merely political and has not achieved its aim of poverty alleviation.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, Mr Imaseun said the programme is not aimed at a single political party but on all Nigerians.

Last month, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) had accused the Federal Government of using the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), for political purposes in preparation of the 2015 general elections.

The party said the programme which was set up to manage savings from the oil subsidy withdrawal is currently being used to channel funds to members and cronies of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who are heading the state chapters of SURE-P.

what is your take?

SURE P AND THE LIKES IS THE REFUGE OF INCOMPETENT JOURNEY MEN WHO IN OTHER CLIMES WILL BE ROTTING IN PRISON
You said it . It is a scam and that is exactly what it is. Just like mamser, operation feed the nation ,poverty alleviation program and others going by one fancy name on the other;it is the refuge of incompetent journey men who in other climes will be rotting in prison.i cannot for the life of me remember awolowo calling or creating any program with special names. All he had was a welfarist socialist ideology on which he stood. From that principled stand, he issued a rallying cry and used education, health and rural development as a means of human capacity development.even when money was not available for classrooms, he provided quality teachers in rural area.rubber ,cocoa, oil palm plantation were created, massive numbers of trees were planted and the forest reserves were properly conserved and managed. A good example of that are those coconut trees in badagry.
Building and maintaining roads and other infrastructure were just business as usual . A lot of the road are still very much still there today with the original tar.he had an idea of where he wanted to go but used experts who knew more about those topics to flesh thing out(go and read awo book:my thought on the nigerian constitution).
Fact is SURE - P like others is uncalled for if the government is actually doing her job.
The fact that the goverment has more revenues at his disposal has not improved the life of the people.in fact the reverse is the case.the 70:30 ratio of recurrent to capital expenditure is a case in point. Also note that the government has been on an hiring spree of recent , into the largely bloated and ineffective civil service. Obasanjo actually reduced the size of the civil service. I know 5 people who got laid off by OBJ.
Like as been repeated before, nigeria is suffering from a resource curse.the government especially the federal government is too big and too corrupt. That is the big problem. When you scale that hurdle, then you can begin to address problems.
