Nigerian Muslim Population to Hit 117m in 2030 – Study

A study carried out in the United States shows that Muslim population in Nigeria is projected to increase by more than 50 per cent in the next 20 years, from about 76 million in 2010 to about 117 million in 2030.
The outcome of the study carried out by Pew Forum on religion and public life indicates that various surveys give differing figures for the size of religious groups in Nigeria, which appears to have roughly equal numbers of Muslims and Christians in 2010.
United States special representative to Muslim communities, Farah Pandith who gave a briefing on the report just released last week stated that by 2030, Muslims are expected to make up 51.5 per cent of Nigeria population in 2030, up from 47.9 per cent in 2010
According to the report, projected increase in Muslim’s population is primarily due to high fertility rates with the average Muslim women in the country put at between six and seven children per woman, compared with an average of five children per woman for non-Muslims. The fertility rates among Muslims, the report stated, are related to factors such as lower levels of education and lower use of birth control.
According to a Pew Forum analysis of the 2008 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey, the percentage of women of childbearing age who cannot read is three times as high among Muslims (71.9 per cent) as among non-Muslim Nigerians (23.9 per cent). Muslim women of childbearing age are also much less likely to have received a formal education than are other women in the country; 66.0 per cent of Muslim women have no formal education, compared with 11.2 per cent of non-Muslims. Only about 3 per cent of Muslim women in Nigeria have attended college or university, compared with roughly 14 per cent of non-Muslim women.
According to the 2008 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey, Muslim women in Nigeria marry more than three years earlier on average than non-Muslim women (15.9 years for Muslims, compared with 19.5 years for non-Muslims). Also, 81.3 per cent of Muslim women say they do not intend to use birth control, compared with 51.2 per cent of non-Muslim women. Geographically, Muslims are more concentrated in the northern part of Nigeria and Christians in the southern part, while the mid-section of the country is more religiously mixed.
Going further than Nigeria, the Pew Forum on religion and public life also projected that Muslim population in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to grow by nearly 60 per cent in the next 20 years, from 242.5 million in 2010 to 385.9 million in 2030.
However, because the region’s non- Muslim population also is growing at a rapid pace, Muslims are expected to make up only a slightly larger share of the region’s population in 2030 (31.0%) than they do in 2010 (29.6%), the study added.
In 2030, Muslims are projected to make up more than 10% of the total population in 10 European countries: Kosovo (93.5%), Albania (83.2 per cent), Bosnia-Herzegovina (42.7 per cent), Republic of Macedonia (40.3 per cent), Montenegro (21.5 per cent), Bulgaria (15.7 per cent), Russia (14.4 per cent), Georgia (11.5 per cent), France (10.3 per cent) and Belgium (10.2 per cent).
Russia will continue to have the largest Muslim population (in absolute numbers) in Europe in 2030. Its Muslim population is expected to rise from 16.4 million in 2010 to 18.6 million in 2030. The growth rate for the Muslim population in Russia is projected to be 0.6 per cent annually over the next two decades. By contrast, Russia’s non-Muslim population is expected to shrink by an average of 0.6 per cent annually over the same period.
France had an expected net influx of 66,000 Muslim immigrants in 2010, primarily from North Africa. Muslims comprised an estimated two-thirds (68.5 per cent) of all new immigrants to France in the past year. Spain was expected to see a net gain of 70,000 Muslim immigrants in 2010, but they account for a much smaller portion of all new immigrants to Spain (13.1 per cent). The U.K.’s net inflow of Muslim immigrants in the past year (nearly 64,000) was forecast to be nearly as large as France’s. More than a quarter (28.1 per cent) of all new immigrants to the U.K. in 2010 are estimated to be Muslim.
In the Americas, the number of Muslims in Canada is expected to nearly triple in the next 20 years, from about 940,000 in 2010 to nearly 2.7 million in 2030. Muslims are expected to make up 6.6 per cent of Canada’s total population in 2030, up from 2.8 per cent today. Argentina is expected to have the third-largest Muslim population in the Americas, after the U.S. and Canada. Argentina, with about 1 million Muslims in 2010, is now in second place, behind the U.S.

Over 120 Million Nigerians Live In Darkness ...Minister
Article | June 6, 2013 - 10:43am | By Augustine Aminu
Over 120 Million Nigerians Live In Darkness ...Minister

Only 40(25%) million Nigerians have access to electricity supply, while 120 million Nigerian (75%) live in darkness, the Federal Government has said.

This, the Power Minister, Chinedu Nebo described as a Nigthmare, caused by human beings, used by evil forces.

The Minister also attributed the current shortage in power supply to the lack of appropriate budgetary provisions in the 2012 budget for maintenance of power equipment adding that the country did not anticipate the current slow pace in the privatization process.

Briefing journalists alongside the ministers of state for power, Zainab Kuchi, information, Labaran Maku, Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe and his minister of state, after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan, the minister said the problems are surmountable with divine intervention and the efforts being made by this administration.

"We have 160 million Nigerians now and we are only giving power to 40 million of that population. what it means is that there are about 120 million Nigerians that are without power and wish to buy power" Kuchi said.

The nightmares, the minister explained, include unprecedented system collapses being experienced while the rainy season has brought about heavy storms like the ones that shattered transmission lines in Bayelsa, and Kebbi states which destroyed four transmission towers.

Nebo also painted a lucrative picture for the sector, also called on investors to take advantage of the ongoing privatization process and government energy mix policy to invest in the sector which he said holds better prospect for lucrative returns.

"We need to deliver power to Nigerians and the only way to do this is by serious Commercialization. There is even more money in power than in Petroleum, all you need is a power plant and you will make money by the day. The government has tried, we have all sorts of encouragement, we could go into coal, renewable energy so we need clusters of the windmill"

The Minister also assured Nigerians that the 10,000MGWT being targeted will be available by the end of 2014.

He disclosed that 3200MGWT is currently available for distribution out of the 4000MGWT being generated.

Nebo said government was looking forward to partnering with Independent producers adding that Power funding should not be left to government alone.

On the further opportunities in the power sector, Nebo disclosed that government is focusing on energy mix, including those of solar, hydro and wind energy, to meet the energy requirement.

"We are looking forward into energy mix, what we are looking at are ways that will bring in so many other options and the only way we can power Nigeria is we have agreed, is to look forward to IPPs. We keep on saying we shouldn't allow imperialism, yes we want foreign direct investment but we also want Nigerians to take ownership. If water can sell on the street, power can sell better because everybody wants power 24/7"

"So if we come together by way of synergy and we are able to build consortiums and the independent Power Projects come in to address the issue of power need it will not only be government looking for funding to do this, the energy mix that we want to come up with, there is solar, wind and hydros. And all these things are available in form of access to Nigerians"

On current shortage in power supply, the Minister attributed the problem to system collapses forced by the natural occurrences like rain storm which knocked out the entire area in Bayelsa State.
" It took about ten to twelve days to restore power to Bayelsa as a result of the heavy storm which destroyed three transmission towers" adding that " In Abuja, we would have had very stable power, but for the vandalization of power equipment by youths in the area. It is easy for systems to collapse through trip offs which causes signal drops

Billion Group BT Ngebs Mall

Billion Group BT Ngebs Mall

Thursday, 4 July 2013 – Billion Group, one of Africa’s leading property developers, today officially broke ground on its latest development – the BT Ngebs Mall in Mthatha.

Billion founder and Executive Chairman, Sisa Ngebulana, who grew up in Mthatha, commented:

“This development is very close to my heart – we are very excited about the opportunities it will unlock in the region.

“At a cost of R1.3 billion, BT Ngebs Mall will not only create thousands of sustainable jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities but our R60 million infrastructure investment will assist in addressing Mthatha’s road, electricity and other infrastructure challenges.”

At almost 60 000 m2, BT Ngebs Mall will be the largest shopping centre of its kind in the region and will service approximately 390 000 existing households in an area with a current retail undersupply of 477 341 m2. Located just off the freeway on Errol Springs Avenue, the mall offers easy access and egress as well as 1 975 parking bays.

For the first time, shoppers will have access to South Africa’s largest retailers and various food and fashion franchises under one roof, offering a wider choice and better value for patrons. Confirmed retailers include Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Clicks, Food Lovers Market, Woolworths, Foschini Emporium, Truworths, Edgars, Jet, @Home, Fabiani, Jenni Button, Hilton Weiner, Aca Joe, Urban, Vertigo, Soviet, Queue, Franco Ceccato, John Craig, the major banks, House & Home, various food franchises, The Hub, Identity, Totalsports, Sportscene, Exact, Pep, Studio 88, Legit and CNA.

Ngebulana expects that up to 2 500 job opportunities will be created during the construction phase, followed by an additional 2 300 to 2 500 permanent positions jointly through Billion Group and its tenants, once trading starts.

“The development will also create a number of entrepreneurial opportunities within the region, such as potential supply chain agreements, care and maintenance contracts and the provision of a retail platform within the mall for products and services,” Ngebulana concluded.

BT Ngebs Mall forms part of Billion Group’s R16 billion investment earmarked for the Eastern Cape region over the next 10 years, which will create thousands of job opportunities and contribute millions of Rands to the local fiscus.

Trading is expected to commence in April 2015.

Queenstown gets new R500 million shopping centre

The Eris Property Group will be developing a R500 million regional shopping mall on the N6 Cathcart Road opposite the rapidly growing area of Komani Park in Queenstown, an economic hub in the Eastern Cape.

Shareholders in Eris include Rand Merchant Bank, Royal Bafokeng Holdings and the Tiso Group, which recently announced its merger with Kagiso Holdings.

Phase one of the Q Mall will extend to 33 000 m2 with more than 100 shops, including the latest style Checkers supermarket, as well as Edgars, Jet, and CTM. Phase two will have a further 8 000 m2 of retail and entertainment facilities in future.

Rob Terry, development manager of the project, says the site’s location between the venerable but overcrowded CBD and the major township of Ezebeleni means that it is ideally situated for all of Queenstown’s shoppers. Its frontage onto the newly upgraded N6 arterial route allows easy access for those using Queenstown as a base from surrounding areas and towns such as Cathcart, Dordrecht and numerous others.

“No longer will people have to drive for two hours to East London for their major shopping. It will all be right here on their doorstep,” he says.

The developers are finalising their arrangements with a host of other well-known retailers, says Ivan Pachonick, retail consulting director for JHI property services group, which is managing the leasing for the project.

“The outstanding response from retailers reaffirms the strong demand and that the timing is right for a modern, regional shopping facility in Queenstown,” he says.

The new shopping centre is also immediately opposite the proposed new 15 000 m2 government and municipal office precinct at Komani Park, which was recently put out to tender together with proposals for 20ha of new affordable housing in the vicinity.

Billy Forssman of Eris Property Group says this is a clear indication of the importance of this area of Queenstown as the growth node for the town.

“A total of over R1 billion will be spent here over the next two years and we look forward to further developments to ease the pressure on the CBD. Queenstown’s centre is still largely as it was laid out in the 1800s but times have changed.

There are major difficulties associated with trying to access services as well as shopping there, from parking issues to congested and broken pavements and long walks between the different shops. This new node will bring together all the goods, services and government departments in a single, clean, convenient and easily accessible location,” says Forssman.

Due to open for Christmas 2012, Q Mall is being designed by leading architects Boogertman and Partners in association with ADA Architects. Boogertman were the architects for the iconic new ‘Calabash’ design Johannesburg World Cup Stadium and recently completed the new Melrose Arch retail development in Johannesburg, as well as designing uShaka Marine World in Durban and several retail complexes around South Africa.

Rich shale gas reserves in South Africa
Number of visits:30 Date:2013-5-28 09:55

South African National shale gas reserves are very rich, has proven available for the use of the country in the next 30 years, with a very good value for development, for shale gas reserves, it is undoubtedly the best news.

The rich countries of the North American crude oil reserve in Canada, the United States and Mexico. Canadian crude oil proven reserves, ranking second in the world, U.S. crude oil proved reserves are mainly located in the Gulf Coast and along the Gulf of California, the most famous of Texas and Oklahoma, also an important oil producing areas in Alaska. The United States is the world's second-largest oil producer, but consumption is too large, still has to import large quantities of oil each year.

Mexico is the third largest in the Western Hemisphere traditional strategic crude oil reserve country, which is also the world's sixth-largest oil producer.Geologists predict that South Africa has abundant shale gas reserves. Distant water puzzled thirst, South Africa, Africa's largest economy still faces the predicament of insufficient shale gas reserves, and shale gas reserves development was halted because of the hydraulic fracturing method.

The same situation in the United States is similar to the highly controversial fracturing in South Africa. Fracturing respected energy companies, but the South African environmentalists oppose this technology in their applications. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a report, South Africa's recoverable shale gas reserves of about 486 trillion cubic feet last year. South Africa has the world's fifth largest shale gas reserves.

As the new market’s development, our target market will switch to other areas, such as South Africa, South America etc. We have offered ceramic proppant in this field for more than ten years so we got rich experience. Wanli will pay great attention to the new market this year.

YES PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE DOING BAD AS COMPARED TO "PRIVATE/FORMER WHITES ONLY SCHOOLS DOMINANTLY 70% BLACK IN BIG CITIES AND 80-90% IN SMALL TOWNS".

TODAY MOST URBAN BLACKS SEND THEIR KIDS TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS(aren't affected by these use their own system) THAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS(Low standards and unions strikes that take days and stealing teaching time, are the course of the rot).

YOU HAVE BEEN POSTING LIES ABOUT S.A. EDUCATION SYSTEM. grin grin grin grin

SAIRR Today: South African schooling - 21st May 2010
South African Institute for Race Relations
Recently the provincial education department in the Eastern Cape stated that it would be auditing former ‘Model C’ schools there because these schools had ‘too many luxuries’, and were refusing to comply with the provincial department’s policies. In a meeting at the provincial legislature in Bhisho in April, the portfolio chairman on education in the province, Mr Mzoleli Mrara, said that ‘Model C’ schools were ‘racist’ and used the country’s courts to win battles against the provincial education department. However, the 2009 matric results in former ‘Model C’ schools around South Africa indicates that their black pupils do very well.

The Institute has analysed results in schools formerly administered by the House of Assembly (HoA). This was the whites-only chamber in the tricameral Parliament which South Africa experimented with between 1984 and 1994. Schools for coloured pupils were administered by the House of Representatives, and Indian schools by the House of Delegates. Schools for African pupils were controlled by either the Department of Education and Training or the various homeland administrations.

Former ‘Model C’ schools can trace their roots to the beginning of the 1990s. In 1990, the then-minister of education, Mr Piet Clasé, announced that from the beginning of 1991 parents with children in white government schools would be allowed to choose from three models how the schools would be run in future.

Model A would result in the school’s becoming fully private. Model B would result in its remaining a state school, and being allowed to admit black pupils up to a maximum of 50% of the total pupil body. Model C would result in the school’s becoming semi-privatised. The school would receive a state subsidy but would have to raise the balance of its budget through fees and donations. It would also be able to admit black pupils up to a maximum of 50% of the student body. From the beginning of 1992, a fourth option was added, Model D. These schools would remain under the control of the white education department, but would be able to admit an unlimited number of black pupils.

In 1992 the Government announced that all schools under the control of the House of Assembly would become Model C schools, unless parents voted by a two-thirds majority for Model B schools. As a result, by April 1992, approximately 1900 former white schools had become Model C schools. This equated to 96% of all schools that were under the control of the House of Assembly.

An analysis of matriculation results broken down by race shows that pupils, especially African pupils, fare significantly better in former ‘Model C’ schools than in other government schools. According to the Department of Education there were 5 477 public secondary schools in South Africa in 2008 (the latest year for which figures are available). Of these, some 620 (11%) were former Model C schools. At the same time there were 180 independent secondary schools in the country.

In 2009 the proportion of African pupils who passed the matric examinations overall was 56%. However in former ‘Model C’ schools the proportion of African pupils who passed was 88%. In order to pass, a pupil must achieve at least 30% in three subjects, and 40% in a further three, one of which must be the pupil’s home language.

An analysis of provincial pass rates is instructive. In the Eastern Cape, where former ‘Model C’ schools were the subject of an attack by the provincial education department, the pass rate for African children in such schools was 95%. The overall pass rate for African pupils in that province in last year’s matric exams was 47%. This shows that in the Eastern Cape, an African pupil’s chances of passing matric are far better if he or she attends a former ‘Model C’ school.

In all other provinces, with the exception of the Northern Cape, pass rates were between 85% and 95% in former ‘Model C’ schools.

NOTE:Today Africans students make up 70-80% Model C schools around South Africa. In smaller towns students are 100% black, as some white students are home schooled or moved to other provinces.

These results are not surprising. Former ‘Model C’ schools have facilities that are the envy of schools which did not fall under the control of the House of Assembly. Although there are many non-’Model C’ schools with dedicated and hard-working teaching staff, the results suggest that the teaching ethos in most former ‘Model C’ schools is still intact. Teachers are serious about their jobs, and dedicated to the children that they teach. The same cannot be said for many non-’Model C’ schools, where teachers often do not teach for the full day and are sometimes not in class at all. Reports of sexual abuse and harassment are rife. In August 2009 President Jacob Zuma said that were a number of schools where teaching occurred for fewer than 3.5 hours per day, rather than the required seven. The majority of schools where this occurs are likely to be non-’Model C’ schools.

The racial make-up of teachers or pupils at former ‘Model C’ schools does not affect the results. Former ‘Model C’ schools which have largely African teaching staff and pupils still perform well. For example, Brakpan High in Ekurhuleni (Gauteng) has an African staff complement exceeding 80%, and some 83% of the pupils who wrote matric there in 2009 were African. The school achieved a pass rate of 93%, far in excess of the provincial pass rate of 65%. The pass rate among Africans in the school was 92%.

There are other examples. Kingsridge High School in King Williams Town, formerly known by the politically incorrect name of Kaffrarian High School for Girls, attained a pass rate of 100%. Of its 87 pupils, some 60 were African, and only 10 were white. Port Shepstone High in KwaZulu-Natal achieved a pass rate of 100%. Some 148 (66%) of its student body of 224 were Africans. Dawnview High, also in Ekurhuleni, had a pass rate of 94%. Some 105 (67%) of its student body were Africans.

The decay and neglect of the African education system is probably the most insidious legacy of apartheid. The restoration of a culture of teaching and learning within predominantly African schools is a matter that the Government must tackle with haste. Schools that work, which appear to be the majority of former ‘Model C’ schools, need to be encouraged and their success replicated elsewhere.

Obviously these schools benefit from superior facilities, but the teaching ethos that is so strong in many of these schools needs to be copied. Poorly-performing schools must be strengthened, but not by weakening the schools that perform well.

Excellence in the public schooling system is not confined to former ‘Model C’ schools. In the 2009 matric exams there were 1 576 schools that achieved pass rates of between 80 and 100%. Nearly one-third of these were former ‘Model C’ schools. Some 509 of such schools achieved pass rates of between 80 and 100%. This equates to 82% of all former ‘Model C’ schools. Conversely only 1 067 of former non ‘Model C’ schools achieved pass rates of between 80 and 100%. This was equal to 22% of such schools. Although the proportion of such schools getting pass rates above 80% was much lower than that in former ‘Model C’ schools, there were nevertheless two excellent such schools for every excellent former ‘Model C’ school.

The South African education system is in crisis, but it is clear that centres of excellence still exist. Many schools which achieve good results did not fall under the jurisdiction of the House of Assembly. The factors that make these schools and many of the country’s former ‘Model C’ schools excellent need to be identified and replicated in the rest of the country’s schools. These good schools are the foundation on which the future success of South Africa will be built, and this must be strengthened and encouraged. At the same time poorly-performing schools must not be abandoned. The success of the more than 1 500 schools which achieved pass rates of above 80% must spread to the rest of the South African education system.

MMADIKGETHO Komane from Limpopo expected to be one of the top matric pupils in her home province but the results held more surprises for her.

The 18-year-old from Glen Cowie Secondary School found out yesterday that she was the country's top pupil with 100% in mathematics, physical science and accounting.

Komane also got distinctions in English, Sepedi and life orientation.

Another top performer with a full house of distinctions was Kamogelo Mamashela from Pax College outside Polokwane, Limpopo.

"I guess my results are a mix between working hard and being naturally smart," he said.

Mamashela wrote Sepedi, English, maths (100%), maths paper 3, physical science (100%), life science, life orientation and geography.

The former pupils were awarded bursaries and iPads at a ceremony to announce the 2012 matric results in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, yesterday afternoon.

Danita le Grange, one of the best-performing matriculants, was invited for lunch with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and her deputy Enver Surtee in Boksburg on Gauteng's East Rand yesterday.

Le Grange, 18, from Hoërskool Dr Malan in Meyerton in the Vaal, Gauteng, attributed her good results to her late father, Lodie, who died in 2011.

"My father made me interested in maths. He used to push me to work hard, unlike my mother, who told me she will still love me no matter what marks I get.

"I dedicate the pass to my father and my little sister, Lara, whom I love more than anyone."

Le Grange wrote mathematics, maths paper 3, English, Afrikaans, computer applications technology, physical science, accounting, tourism, business studies and life orientation.

Her brother, Lodie junior, said: "I had to move out of the house into an outside flat because her studying irritated me. She did not want any noise in the house. At 7pm, we all had to go to bed because she wanted to study."

Le Grange said she followed a strict timetable.

"I had a timetable for when to bath, sleep, eat and study. I made sure I slept eight hours every day, but when I wrote maths, I only slept for four hours because I was so stressed."

This year, she will start a BSc in biological science at the University of Pretoria with the aim of transferring to medicine.

Godknows Dube, 20, from Siyabonga Secondary School in Bramfischerville, Soweto, said he did not expect to be among the country's top performers.

"I knew I would get good results and be one of the best performers in Gauteng, but not the country," Dube said.

He wrote English, Sepedi, life orientation, maths, physical science, accounting, business studies, economics and maths paper 3.

Dube will study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.

Siyabulela Lethuxolo Xuza: Yes, it is rocket science

05 March 2012

Engineering whizzkid Siyabulela Lethuxolo Xuza is a young man with a big future.

From the early days of experimenting with science in his mother’s kitchen in the poor community of Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, to international science and engineering accolades, he is now a role model for South Africa’s aspiring scientists.

These days the darling of Nasa, who were so taken with him that they gave him a personal guided tour of their facilities, is the youngest member of the Africa 2.0 energy advisory panel.

The pan-African organisation comprises the continent’s brightest minds and is committed to seeking sustainable solutions to challenges faced by Africans.

In a March 2012 interview with US television network CBS, Xuza said that his current work is focusing on transforming homes into power plants "that capture the energy of the sun during the day and store some of it in fuel cells, for use at night".
Starting young

In his own words, Xusa described the moment that sparked his lifelong passion for science.

“I was chasing the roar of a Cessna plane dropping election pamphlets over Mthatha, my South African township,” he wrote on the America.gov website.

“It was 1994, the first year of a new democracy in my country, and the sight of that technological marvel ignited in me a curiosity for science and a passion for using technology to engineer an African renaissance.”

He was just five years old at the time. The youngster was also later inspired by South African entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth’s trip into space in 2002, an event that was largely responsible for his long-standing interest in rocketry.

His mother's kitchen soon became the scene for much experimentation with formulations of jet and rocket fuel, but the informal laboratory had to be moved to the garage after a sticky incident with a too-hot stove.

Xuza wasn’t deterred, and over the next few years he continued to work on the project, which culminated in the successful launch of a real home-built rocket, the Phoenix. This vehicle achieved a final height of over a kilometre and earned him the junior South African amateur high-powered altitude record.

The rocket was propelled by Xuza’s own invention, a cheaper, safer type of rocket fuel, which became the subject of a project titled African Space: Fuelling Africa's quest to space. It won a gold medal in the 2006 Eskom National Science Expo as well as a trip to the Nobel Prize ceremony in Sweden, where he presented his work to the Swedish king and queen.

The same project took him to the 58th Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as part of Team South Africa.

Here the project was entered in the energy and transport category and won the 18-year-old, then a matric pupil on a scholarship at St John’s College in Johannesburg, a Best of Category award and a First award.

Xuza also received the honour of having a celestial body named after him by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, which is replacing the complicated scientific names of thousands of minor planets with more accessible names in honour of the world’s top achievers.

The minor planet 23182 Siyaxuza circles the solar system in the main asteroid belt near Jupiter and takes 4.01 years to complete a single orbit. It was discovered in July 2000.

Xuza has garnered numerous other accolades, including a fellowship in 2010 of the African Leadership Network, and in 2011 he was made a fellow of the international student-run Kairos Society. Membership to this global body is by invitation only.
A bright future

Matriculating in 2007 with a string of As, it was almost guaranteed that Xuza would take up further studies at a prestigious institution – that turned out to be Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where he became one of just 1 948 students accepted out of about 28 000 who applied.

He started his engineering degree in September 2008, but wasn’t afraid to take up academic challenges such as debating, the Mandarin language, and world music. These interests, he said, would broaden his mind.

The young man from the Eastern Cape also joined the Harvard Forum for International Leadership, a society that brings together students from all around the world to discuss global issues such as HIV/Aids, terrorism and the development of emerging economies, as well as the need for efficient energy solutions.

“I may not be able to predict what the future holds,” he wrote on www.america.gov, “but I am excited at how my engineering education will enable me to achieve my aspirations for Africa.”
