Evestar200: The League Management
Company (LMC) is considering an
abridged Nigeria Premier League
for the coming season, officials
have disclosed.
The new League season is now
expected to kick off in February
immediately after the
Championship of African Nations
(CHAN) in South Africa.
The season will also be expected
to end in May to allow for the
preparation for the 2014 World
Cup in Brazil.
Organisers are now likely to split
the 20-team championship into
two groups with the top two
clubs from each group clashing
in a round-robin playoff to
determine the league champions.
“Clubs are already getting feelers
that the new League season will
be an abridged one so as to
meet the Fifa May deadline for
the World Cup preparations,” a
club official informed.
Clubs may well kick against this
format as they did for the past
season, arguing that an abridged
League would also mean “an
abridged budget” from their
various state governments.

Shooting Stars midfielder Philip
Asuquo has joined Sunshine
Stars ahead of Nigeria
champions Kano Pillars.
“Asuquo negotiated to join us
for the new season, but he has
now informed us that he has
finally agreed to join Sunshine
Stars,” disclosed Pillars
spokesman Idris Malikawa.
The creative midfielder,
nicknamed Iniesta after the Spain
star, has already agreed personal
terms with Sunshine and was
even in Akure to put pen to
paper in that respect.
He was part of Sunshine Stars
pre-season build-up in Rojenny,
near Onitsha, last week.
He was also a transfer target for
Bayelsa United, who will feature
in next year’s CAF Confederation
Cup.
Asuquo has featured for several
clubs including Plateau United,
Crown FC and Kwara United.
He has also been capped by
Nigeria at ‘B’ level.

Experienced defender Mutiu
Adegoke has joined Bayelsa
United on a season-long loan
deal from relegated Shooting
Stars.
The well-travelled Adegoke has
featured for several clubs
including Asec Mimosas of Cote
d’Ivoire, Dolphins, Lobi Stars and
Enyimba.
His new club Bayelsa will
campaign in next year’s CAF
Confederation Cup after they
finished third in the league last
season.
The free kick specialist went
down with Shooting Stars this
past season.
He was one several top stars
reportedly suspended by 3SC
after they failed to report for the
club’s pre-season training.
Other players who are not going
down to the Nigeria National
League with Shooting Stars are
Kingsley Eduwo and Tony
Edjomarigwe, who have signed
for neighbours Sunshine Stars.

Nigerian champions,
Kano Pillars are
undecided on which
of the duo of Kadiri
Ikhana and Okey
Emordi to lead their team for the
2013/14 Glo Premier League
season.
Already the Pyramid City side
have contracted three
undisclosed Italians to work with
the yet to be named Nigerian
coach.
The Nigerian duo have been
shortlisted for the plum job but
the Pillars management is yet to
agree on whom to hand over the
mantle of leadership.
An official of Kano Pillars, Idris
Malikawa said the board is still
assessing the two coaches and
will very soon name one of them
to lead the side in their Africa
and domestic league campaigns.
“The government has mandated
the board to go ahead and name
a coach for the side. The board's
searchlight has been narrowed
down to Kadiri Ikhana and Okey
Emordi both of whom have been
interviewed by the technical
committee specially set up for the
purpose.
“The board is still assessing the
two coaches and once they are
satisfied one of them will be
named the head coach to work
with the Italians already
contracted.
“The board is mindful of the
expectations of Nigerians and is
asking for their patience and
prayer too to assist the board to
do what is right.
“Kano Pillars want to go to the
continent to contest for the title
not to make up the numbers and
that’s why we’re taking time to
ensure we give Nigerians the
best representation by naming
the best coach for the side,”
Malikawa said to supersport.com.
Malikawa said the side will
approach the test game against
the domestic Super Eagles on
Monday in Abuja like they will
against the Caf Champions
League opponents, AS Vita of DR
Congo.
“We want to take the friendly tie
against the domestic Eagles on
Monday as seriously as we would
approach the first game against
the DR Congo side, AS Vita in the
Caf Champions League tie.
“Victory is on our minds, nothing
short of outright victory will be
acceptable to us.
“The technical crew has recalled
selected players from the break
for the crucial encounter, that’s
to tell you we’re not taking the
test game lightly.
“It’s a must win game for us and
opportunity for us to test our
players as well as let Nigerians
into what we’ve in stock for
them in the coming season,”
Malikawa said.
The build-up clash will be Eagles’
last practice game before they
head off to South Africa for the
third African Nations
Championship (Chan) where they
are pitched in Group A with the
hosts, South Africa, Mali and
Mozambique. source: www.supersports.com

The Akure club is going about its
recruitment carefully with little
noise as they hope to bounce
back from their unimpressive
results in the league last season
A top official of Sunshine Stars
has expressed happiness at the
calibre of goalkeepers in the fold
of the Akure club ahead of the
2013/14 Nigeria Professional
Football League (NPFL) season
which starts next year across the
country.
Sunshine have recruited Sharks'
goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa
and Rangers' Godwin Ayalogu to
add to Moses Ocheje and Henry
Abiodun that were with the club
during the last campaign.
Ezenwa is a goalkeeper with rich
experience having taken part in
the FIFA U20 World Cup in
Canada in 2007 and in the U23
national team under Samson
Siasia in 2008. He was in the
team that grabbed a silver medal
at the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing, China.
Another new entrant, Ayalogu
was in fantastic last season for
Rangers before he got injured
while Ocheje and Abiodun are
also no novice to the round
leather game.
In a chat with Goal, the top
official of Sunshine who does not
want in name in print said that
the Akure side would only go
about their recruitment without
much fuss on the pages of
newspapers as they look poised
to build a strong team from the
goalkeepers to the strikers
before the start of the season.
"We are very discreet at our
recruitment. We want to as much
as possible get very good players
at very affordable rate. The two
goalkeepers we have added to
our team are to increase the
battle for who will man the post
during our matches.
"Ayalogu is a good goalkeeper
from Rangers and Ezenwa too is
trying his best. We also have
other fine players that we are not
going to say much about now. It
is until the season starts that you
are going to see the best of us,"
the source told Goal. SOURCE: www.Goal.com

The NPFL winners have bolstered
their team with intelligent and
experienced players with the
league season just around the
corner
Kano Pillars have completed the
signing of five players ahead of
the Nigeria Professional Football
League (NPFL) season for
2013/14.
Pillars said they base their squad
on continuity but that they have
been able to look at areas that
are weak that need
strengthening before the next
season starts.
Sai Masu Gida picked two players
from Heartland and Enyimba
respectively and another from
Sunshine Stars. These players are
Kingsley Udoh, Abdul Haruna
(who is on a second stint to Kano
Pillars having left the club in
2010 for Heartland after an
impressive performance in the
CAF Champions League a year
earlier), Eneji Otekpa, Nura
Mohammed and Henry Ezekiel.
The Media Officer of Pillars, Idris
Malikawa told Goal that the club
took the track record and the
current form of the players into
cognisance before approaching
them for deals.
He predicted that Pillars would
never make up the numbers in
the CAF Champions League
insisting that they are in it to win
it for the first time.
Malikawa also hinted that Pillars
would be taken the game against
the Super Eagles next Monday
seriously because it will provide
them with an opportunity to test
their players before their early
February grudge match with AS
Vita of Congo.
"We are going to play against the
Eagles with our best players. We
won't play them with ease at all.
The five players we have signed
will help us to stabilise and assist
our cause to have more than
decent run in the Champions
League," Malikawa told Goal.

Emeka Eze has said he is
unhappy at Enugu Rangers and
the forthcoming season could
well be his last with the club.
"I'm not happy at Rangers and it
is most likely that the next
season would be my last with the
club," he said.
"My target now is to ensure that
before I leave I help the club win
a major trophy. And we have
started on a good note by
winning an invitational
tournament recently."
The once mighty Rangers have
not won a major trophy in
almost 30 years.
Defensive midfielder Eze, who
has been capped by the Super
Eagles and was on the squad to
the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup
in Brazil, has recovered from an
ankle surgery, which kept him
out for several months.
He said he now hopes to move
abroad.
"Nothing came out of a proposed
move to Germany, but I'm still
hopeful I will get a better deal to
move to Europe in the new year,"
said the player, who was linked
with a move to German
Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in
the summer. Source: www.kickoffnigeria.com

Enyimba will start the defence of
their Federation Cup title when
they face non-league side Sokoto
North at the Fifa Goal Project
pitch in Abuja this Wednesday.
The two-time African champions
are favourites to progress ahead
of this round of 64 clash with
their unfancied opponents from
Sokoto.
Enyimba captain and defender
Chinedu Udoji told
supersport.com that the Aba club
are ready for their first game of
the Cup.
He added that the People's
Elephant will not take Sokoto
North for granted despite the
non-league outfit being
underdogs.
"In Cup competitions, there are
no big or small teams. All that big
or small team talk only exist on
paper. Our opponents played
their way up to this stage and it
will be very disrespectful for us
or anyone to call a team small
because they don't play in the
Premier League.
"Yes, we have won the
Federation Cup and our
opponents have not, but that
does not mean it will be easy
facing them. We are prepared for
this [Cup] match and taking it
seriously. It's a knockout format
and it's always possible to slip
but we have no intention of
falling out so early in the
competition," Udoji said to
supersport.com.
The Federation Cup holders have
travelled to Abuja without
experienced midfielder Sani Kaita
as newly-appointed head coach,
Kadiri Ikhana, will start his
managerial return to the Aba
club.
Enyimba have won the
Federation Cup in 2005, 2009
and 2013.
The Cup competition will also
throw up big clashes in the
round of 64 this Wednesday and
Thursday.
In Minna, premier division side
Giwa FC face National League
club ABS, while Kwara United go
up against Sharks in Benin City.
Both games are on Wednesday.
Other big games of this round
include Wikki Tourists versus El-
Kanemi Warriors, Bendel
Insurance versus Sunshine Stars
and Gateway FC versus Kano
Pillars.
