Abraham faith Tested
Abraham faith was tested again when God told him to offer Isaac - the covenant child as a sacrifice unto Him. He neither questioned God nor hesitated to do according to His command. He believed God knew the best and would not put the man of His heart to shame. Abraham faith demonstrated our needs to keep faith and stand stronger when we are tested. Hebrews 11:17 - By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that has received the promises offer up his only beggotten son. We have the followings for discussion: Sacrifice Commanded by God; Obedience to God Displayed; Obedience to God rewarded.

Sacrifice Commanded by God: God's promise was fulfilled with the birth of Isaac when Abraham was one hundred years and Sarah was ninety years old (Genesis 21:1-7). His birth was not the final miracle, it was just the beginning of God's plan to bless nations and bring salvation to people who are reconciled to Him. Isaac means 'I laugh' and was derived from Abraham's and Sarah's responses to God's promise. The laughter signified their disbelief of possibility of giving birth to a child at their old age. God brought what seemed to be impossible into reality.

God tested Abraham's faith when he was asked to take Isaac to the land of Moriah and offer him for a burnt offering (Genesis 22:1-2). Isaac response and cooperation portrayed him as the beloved son God promised Abraham. Abraham was called out of the land where human sacrifice to god was practiced, so the call to sacrifice Isaac could not be strange to him.

Obedience to God displayed: Without questioning God or asking others for advice Abraham embarked on the long journey to Moriah for the sacrificial offering. On the mountain Isaac asked about the sacrifice, but Abraham said, 'God will provide'. He had no clear answer but he believed God would do the best( Genesis 22:3-8 ). If we keep faith in God he has the power to turn the situation around for our good. He is able to perform what He promised (Romans 4:21).

Abraham's unwavering faith encouraged him to embark on sacrificing Isaac without hesitation (Genesis 22:9-10). Without questioning his father Isaac willingly surrendered to be offered for a sacrifice. Isaac's acted like Christ who willingly surrendered his life as a sacrificial offering for all. Isaac was the fulfilment of God's covenant to bless nations of the world (Genesis 21:12; Romans 9:6-7).

Obedience to God Rewarded: As Abraham was about to draw knife through Isaac throat God's angel called out unto him to stop doing so (Genesis 22:11-14) God provided a ram for a replacement. God rewards obedience and unwavering trust in Him. It is by faith we can see God as the loving and caring Father and the One who knows and can meet our needs.

God provided ram and reaffirmed His covenant that Abraham would be a great nation, his descendants would be victorious over their enemies, and through them nations of the world would be blessed (Genesis 22:15-19). Just as Abraham was greatly rewarded, we can be rewarded if we continue in faith and obedience. God's greatest reward is eternal life in the presence of Christ. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Genesis 21:1-7; 22:1-19.

God Raises a Deliverer (Moses)
God is the hope of the hopeless and responds to those who cry to him for help in the time of trouble. He prepares and enables whoever He calls to do His work. Psalm 116:1 - I love the Lord, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. We have the followings for discussion: God Prepares a Deliverer; God Calls the Deliverer; God Assures the Deliverer.

God Prepares a Deliverer: Moses was born at the time Pharaoh passed an edict that newborn boys of Israelites should be thrown into river Nile in an attempt to reduce their population and weaken their strengths. Moses mother has hidden him three months before she placed him by the side of the river in a basket (Exodus 2:1-10). Pharaoh's daughter saw the baby and arranged for a person to take care of him among the Hebrew women. Surprisingly, it was the mother that was employed to take care of the baby. At that time Pharaoh's daughter adopted the child and named him Moses. God provides solution in hopeless situation.

Moses was brought up in Egyptian palace and had every reason to identify himself as an Egyptian but he wouldn't. He was identified with his people and deeply concerned about their plights. That made him to act cruelly when he killed the Egyptian who maltreated his fellow Hebrew. Moses knew what he did was wrong and could not survive Pharaoh's wrath. Therefore he fled from Egypt to Midian. Unwise and sinful action results in fear.

Again in Midian Moses encountered another injustice against seven sisters of the same father, he intervened and helped them out. The sisters reported the events to their father, and his response resulted in Moses' marriage to one of the daughters (Exodus 2:16-25). The Israelites continued to cry to God for their deliverance from bondage, force labour and maltreatment in Egypt. God heard their cries and was ready to deliver them through Moses. God will make things work for good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

God Calls the Deliverer: God began the process of deliverance when he appeared to Moses in the forest in a wonderful way. The bush was burning with fire, and was not consumed. God called to Moses out of the bush. He answered and was told to remove his shoes as he was standing in holy ground, which translates to God's presence (Exodus 3:1-6). Coming to the presence of God requires doing what befits His majesty. He is holy and can't be approached with sinful acts.

God told Moses that he would lead Israelites out of Egypt to the promised. Israelites had difficult times in Egypt but God didn't forget them. If God is involved he will definitely make a way out of the trouble (Exodus 3:7-9). God explained the purpose of sending Moses for deliverance of his people, but Moses was reluctant at first to do the work. He asked: "Who am I ?" and "Who shall I say is sending me?". God replied him, 'say I AM has sent you'. 'I AM' declares eternal existence of God. Jesus later identified himself by the same name, showing that he is God indeed.

God Assures the Deliverer: God assured Moses that his people would receive his word for the planned deliverance. God didn't stop at that He assured Moses with three miracles which confirmed His presence and readiness to deliver his people (Exodus 4:1-9). God still performs miracles with ordinary people, and can use the ordinary to accomplish His purpose.

Moses then asked the final question that he didn't speak well but God said He would give him words to say. Moses still wanted God to send another person, counting on his weakness and showing unwillingness to deliver. In that instance he made God angry about what He had planned to do (Exodus 4:10-17).

God didn't stop His work, He provided Aaron, Moses' brother to be the voice while Moses would receive direct messages from him. At that moment Moses' excuses was over. God is aware of strengths and weaknesses of whoever He calls and gives a role to play. He will make the work easier by trusting Him. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Exodus 2:1 through 4:17.

Moses and Aaron Confront Pharaoh
God sent Moses and Aaron to Pharaoh to allow Israelites to go and serve Him. Pharaoh rejected the message and increased suffering of people God was about to deliver from oppression. Exodus 5:1 - Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go and hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. We have the followings for discussion: God's Word Rejected; God Affirms His Promise; God Reveals His Plan.

God's word rejected: Moses had several encounters with God since he left Egypt. In the wilderness God assured him of His presence with him and commissioned him to lead Israelites out of the bondage. He had assured Moses that He would display His power to convince Pharaoh about freedom of His people. God also told Moses that Pharaoh would not grant the request, but by His mighty hand the Israelites would be freed from slavery. If God calls us to a task He will equip us with all we need to complete it, we just need to give thanks to Him and remain faithful to be successful.

Pharaoh rejected Moses request and increased suffering of the people by increasing their hard work (Exodus 5:1-6). As their suffering continued they began to loose hope despite assurance of their freedom which was confirmed by miraculous signs Moses performed. The people were emotionally disturbed and felt bitter on injustice done to them.

Consequently they blamed and despised Moses and Aaron for their increased suffering; they were forced to scatter all over the land of Egypt in search of materials needed to do and complete their hard work (Exodus 5:19-21). God sometimes does what He has promised to do at His appointed time, and the interval between His timing and our expectations may be the period of time our faith is being tested. In such a situation we should trust God and seek His direction.

God Affirms His Promise: Moses was disturbed about Pharaoh's negative reaction and harsh response of his people that he questioned God concerning His promised deliverance (Exodus 5:22-23). He had forgotten what God had said earlier that Pharaoh's heart would be hardened so that he would not allow the people to go. Moses lacked the understanding of how events would unfold at God's timing.

God wasn't angry with Moses about his complaints, He just told him that their deliverance was that very time (Exodus 6:1-13). That the time had come to prove His might and show His power in the land of Egypt. He reminded Moses of His covenant with the Israelites that they would be His people, and He would be their God. They were already discouraged and weakened in faith as a result of the increased suffering, but God was ready to do what He promised. When faith is being tested, believers are encouraged to remain faithful and focus on God concerning His promise and assurance.

God Reveals His Plan: God said He would make Moses to be like God in the eyes of Pharaoh. He said Moses would be like God to Aaron, and Aaron would be a prophet to him. Moses would go and represent the One true God before Pharaoh, while Aaron would be speaking on his behalf (Exodus 7:1-2). God was about to perform miracles that would make people believe and serve One true God.

God hardened Pharaoh's heart so that he could have spiritual encounter with with Him and see manifestation of His power. He would perform miracles, bring judgement on the land and deliver His people so that all people would know and believe in One true God (Exodus 7:3-7). The loving and eternal God raises hope when it seems there is no hope. To God be the glory. Lesson Texts: Exodus 5:1 thru 6:13; 7:1-7.

God's awesome Power Displayed
Who is like unto God, among other gods? He is glorious in holiness, fearful in praises and doing wonders. He is just and will not allow evil to go unpunished. He called and commissioned Moses for deliverance of His chosen people from the land of slavery. When He is ready nothing can stop Him and when He says YES forces saying NO are just wasting time. Exodus 3: 20 - And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go. We have the followings for discussion: Pharaoh Resists God's Power; God Judges Egypt with Plagues; God Prepares Israel for Deliverance.

Pharaoh Resists God's Power: Moses and Aaron obeyed God by doing what He asked them to do, but Pharaoh pushed Egypt to engage Him by turning down His request which was to allow Israelites go and serve Him (Ex 7:8-13). God had told Moses that Pharaoh would demand for a miracle for confirmation of his mission. God told Moses what to do. In the presence of Pharaoh, Aaron threw down his rod and it became a snake, Pharaoh too instructed his magicians to do same but Aaron's rod swallowed their rods. Success out of the instruction given by God requires obedience.

Pharaoh wasn't satisfied with the first miracle; He still wanted God to continue showing His power. The Lord spoke to Moses to tell Aaron to stretch out his hand with the rod upon the waters of river Nile. Aaron did so and waters of the land turned to blood (Ex 7:14-25). The waters became putrid and smelling, it was not drinkable and fishes in them died. Egyptian magicians also did similar miracle in a smaller way but they didn't have the power to return the waters back to normal until 7 seven days when God did so.

God Judges Egypt with Plagues: Pharaoh was not still satisfied with the two miracles, Moses and Aaron knew he would risk more signs and wonders of God. He continued to try the power of God and God responded by sending more plagues over the land (Ex 8:5-7:16-19). His magicians also continued to duplicate God's miracles until it got to a time when they could no longer copy the miracle. Then Pharaoh acknowledged the Almighty God of Moses, but he still hardened his heart and would not allow Israelites to go.

In all the Judgement on Egypt, God showed mercy and protected His people (,Ex 8:22-24;9:6-7,10-11,23-26; 10:13-15,22-23). He was watching over His people and didn't allow any of the nine plagues to be seen in their camp in Goshen. This shows that God doesn't like to judge and punish the righteous with the wicked. As God protected the Israelites in Egypt from all troubles, He still does the same today for people that love and remain faithful to him.

God Prepares Israelites for Deliverance: God didn't just deliver the Israelites from Egypt, He blessed thier going out of the land. He made Egyptians to give generously, what can be regarded as parting gifts to His people (Ex 11:1-3). One will wonder how such dramatic turn around of events could be possible among people stricken by plagues of God's judgment. The Lord's doing will always be marvelous in the sights of people. He can cause one's enemies to deliver for one's success.

God intended that His people would match out triumphantly with good rewards over the centuries of bondage and slavery. Christians may not find any good things coming their ways while they endure hardships for doing what God expects of them. They should remain hopeful and believe in God for the best in the end. He will one day give rewards that are beyond imagination.

Pharaoh caused his people to suffer a lot, yet he didn't allow Israelites to go as demanded by God. He was told that subsequent miracle would involve death of all firstborn males in the land, but God gave Moses the assurance that Israelites would not be affected (Ex 11:7-10). God doesn't want people to follow the way of destruction. He want us to love Him and lead others to His Salvation which he had made provision for through Jesus as He provided for deliverance of Israelites through Moses. To God be the Glory. Lesson texts: Exodus 7: 8 through 11:10.

The Passover Instituted

God would perform the last miracle which would overwhelm Pharaoh and his people and make them to send the Israelites out of Egypt. The passover marked the beginning of the event that put an end to oppression of God's people. Likewise it was instituted to commemorate their deliverance. Exodus 12:13 - And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are: and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. We have the followings for discussion: The Passover Event; The Exodus; The Passover remembered.

The Passover Event: God gave Moses and Aaron the direction to follow in preparation for the passover. The passover lambs were to be slaughtered and their blood applied to doorposts and lintels of houses of the Israelites for protection against God's judgement upon Egypt (Exodus 12:21-23). The "destroyer" an angel sent by God for the judgement was to spear inhabitants of the houses marked by the blood. The Israelites were also instructed to stay inside their houses throughout the night of the passover day.

Generations of Israelites were required to observe the passover feast. The feast was meant to remember God's saving grace and power by which Israelites were rescued from slavery and preserved from death (Exodus 12:24-28). Just as people faithfully responded by bowing and worshipping God, Christians are expected to faithfully respond to God's word and follow the Bible as the standard for faith and conduct.

The destroyer passed through Egypt at the midnight and houses without protection of the blood were smitten. Firstborn males of all Egypt's households including their livestock died (Exodus 12:29-30). God had earlier warned Pharaoh of the impending danger if he failed to release the Israelites. Pharaoh's stubbornness led to the final disaster upon his people. The Egyptians reacted with intense fear and anger such that they were ready to allow the people of God to go as demanded.

The Exodus: The horrors of death gripped Pharaoh and his people, thus he was eager to release Israelites. Egyptians were in haste to see the people go to where God wanted them to be. Pharaoh didn't want to suffer any longer, he asked Moses to bless him as the Israelites were about to leave (Ex 12:31-36). Fear of more death gripped Egyptians that they provided Israelites with gold, silver and clothing and wanted them to leave in haste.

The Israelites were filled with joy (Ex 12:40-42), relief and thanksgiving as they were leaving Egypt. They didn't leave with empty hands, they were given good shares of wealth and treasure of Egypt as spoken by God (Ex 3:21-22; 11: 2-3). They were led out of the land with 600,000 men plus children and the women. They also left with flocks and herds. They had endured years of oppression in captivity but when God's time came nothing could stop their deliverance. Their deliverance was at the day they had lived for exactly 430 years in Egypt.

Just as the Israelites trusted and obeyed God for their deliverance, Christians must trust God and learn His word for instruction, direction and to secure His protection. We can be filled with joy when God responds to our needs and the time we recall wonderful things God has done in our lives.

The Passover Remembered: It was to be remembered by dedicating all firstborn males of people and their animals to God. The Israelites were chosen by God as His firstborn (Ex 4:22), which indicated special relationship with God. The obligation of being the firstborn of God was later transfered to the Levi (Number 3:11-13) and in the new testament Christians have taken up the devotion (1 Peter 2:9-10), and with the institution of the Lord's Super Christ renewed the Passover and made it applicable for all people (Matthew 26:26-30). Through faith in Christ believers are set apart for service to God as His chosen people.

God demanded that Israelites would commemorate their deliverance. They were to hold seven-day feast to rejoice and pass the message down to future generations. The blood of passover lamb was used for protection and deliverance of Israelites in Egypt, but in new testament Jesus became the Passover Lamb. Through his blood he bears sins of humanity, saves souls from consequences of sin and makes God's salvation available for all. To God be the glory. Exodus 12: 1 thru 13:10.

Miracle at the Red Sea

God is miracle working God, He worked miracles in the past, today and in the future He will continue to perform miracles. Miracles are actions performed by God, Christ or men of God which are contrary to natural rules. They are supernatural events which are only possible through the power of God. Exodus 14:29 - The children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. We have the followings for discussion: God's People Fear Destruction; God Assures His People; God Miraculously Delivers His people.

Miracle at the Red Sea: As the Israelites continued the journey in the wilderness they were told to encamp by the sea, which would make Pharaoh think they were in trouble and wouldn't advance any longer (Exodus 14:1-4). Israelites' departure from Egypt was still like dream to Pharaoh that he thought of pursuing and getting them back to Egypt. He had forgotten about God's presence with Israelites and how God dealt with Egyptians as a result of his stubbornness (Exodus 14:5-9). Once God sets the stage for what He will do, nothing can disturb His work. We just need to trust Him and follow His direction.

The Israelites were afraid as Pharaoh and his army were coming after them with Red Sea ahead and no way of escape. They thought they were trapped and doomed to die, and in frustration they reacted angrily against Moses (Exodus 14:10-12). Fear had caused them to forget how God proved His presence previously in their midst. Difficult circumstances can make people forget about God's goodness and care so easily as the Israelites did, but if they believe that those circumstances are to strengthen and make them trust God the more, He will make them overcome and be people of blessings to others.

God Assures His People: Moses response to fear of his people gave them hope and comfort in God. They were encouraged to stand firm and not to fear (Exodus 14:13-14). In the seemingly impossible situation they were told to hold their peace, remain still, and trust God. He had performed numerous miracles about their deliverance, so in that difficult situation He couldn't just forget about them. As the Israelites did, all we need in tight and difficult situation is to place our trust in God. He has the power to bring about real and lasting peace. No power on earth can change His plan (Romans 8:31).

Moses was instructed by God to hold his rod and stretch his hand over the sea for yet another powerful miracle to be performed (Exodus 14:15-18). God that brought the people that far was still available to turn their fear to joy. At times In the presence of hard challenges it can be difficult to surrender to God and move on in faith, but we just have to do so. Problems that defile human solutions can be successfully solved through divine intervention. God would allow Pharaoh to further try His power until his deadly and final defeat so that all people will know God of Israel is the One True God.

God Miraculously Delivers His People: Pharaoh's army had ample opportunity to acknowledge the power of God and desist from acting contrarily to His will when they were frightened by the display of His wonders. The Lord's presence was shown as the pillar of cloud by the day and pillar of fire by the night which made it so difficult for Pharaoh and his army to advance with the Israelites (Exodus 14:19-22). By this God expressed His dual nature: He saves and judges. Moses did as instructed, he stretch his hand over the sea and there came strong eastern winds that parted the sea.

The waters separated and stood as walls to the left and right so that Israelites walked through dry ground across the Sea to the other side. Egyptians were thrown into confusion, but they followed the path in the sea to pursue Israelites. As the last person of the Israelites set feet out of the sea Moses stretched his hand over the sea again and the walls of water collapsed immediately. Pharaoh and all his army were drowned in the sea (Exodus 14:23-31). One will wonder why Pharaoh's magicians couldn't cause the pillars to stand until they they too would be out of the sea. Devil's miracles are like tricks, God's miracle is supernatural.

It was like Israelites were trapped between the sea and the army that was set for their destruction, but God saved them by His mighty power. Today God can still demonstrate His power among people that love Him and set themselves apart for His service. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Exodus 14:1-31

God's Greatest Commandments
God gave us His commandments so that we can live just and holy and have good relationships with others. He promised blessings for people that obey His commandments. The Law was given to help people check their lives and guard against behaviours that can bring judgement and punishment. Everyone is a suspect under the law because the law is not adequate to purify the heart, remove evil thoughts and wicked desires. It is through Christ believers' hearts are purged of sin to live rightly for God and secure His salvation. Ephesians 24:7- He (Moses) took the book of the covenant and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said we will do, and be obedient. We have the followings for discussion: Israel Commanded to Love God; Israel Commanded to love others; Israel Promises Obedience to God

Israel Commanded to Love God: The ten commandments instruct people to please God and have good relationship with others. God commanded people to know and worship no other gods except Him. He revealed Himself as the eternal, all-powerful, all-knowing and the Only True God people must serve (Exodus 20:1-7). Worship of objects or images of any form is against His commandments, therefore it is wrong for believers to ascribe divine power to any objects. God is Spirit and we must worship Him in Spirit and truth (John 4:23-24).

God's name must not be misused; His name must not be used to bear false witnesses and make promises that we do not intend to keep. Jesus summarized how we can apply the ten commandments and live to please God (Matthew 22:36-40). God also reminded people of the need to rest as He rested after six days of work. He commanded that a day should be set apart to rest, worship and serve Him (Exodus 20:8-11). By doing this we recognise Him as sovereign God, Our Creator, Our Master and Our Lord.

Israel Commanded to love Others: God wants people to love themselves if they truly love and serve Him. He commanded children to honour their parents so that they can receive the blessing of long life and prosperity (Exodus 20:12). Such honour is demonstrated By care, respect, compassion and love shown to them; it must also be given to those who took care of us from the beginning. The remaining commandments focus on relationship with others: friends, family members, neighbours, coworkers, strangers and even the enemies (Exodus 20:13-17).

God commanded that people shall not kill, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness or covet. He is the giver of life and the One that has the right to take it, man must not kill others because of malice, hatred or careless behaviours. God's commands prohibit all manners of wrongdoings toward others. Those doing contrary to His commands are not His people.

Israel Promises Obedience to God: The people were expected to follow all commands of God and remain focused on spiritual priorities for good of their nation. Moses built an alter and made sacrifices which involved sprinkling of the blood for forgiveness of sins and to affirm God's covenant (Exodus 24:3-6).

Today Christians have received the ultimate blessing of being made the people of God through Christ's supreme sacrifice; his blood of covenant has since replaced the old practice of sacrificing and shedding blood of animals for forgiveness of sin. God made Christ the Only sacrifice required for forgiveness and removal of sins, purification of hearts and Salvation of all souls.

Christians are no longer under the bondage of Law because Christ has made them free from its obligations. This doesn't mean the laws are no longer relevant, God wants His Law written in our hearts and demands that we turn the right attitudes (Romans 2:14-15; Hebrews 10:11-15). Obedience to God's commands is no longer a matter of code, it is of conscience. It requires fundamental moral concepts and righteous living God requires of His people.

Just as Israelites reaffirmed their obedience to God's commands in the Book of Covenant after blood was applied to the altar (Exodus 24:7-8 ), Christians are to respond positively to Christ's sacrifice and act in obedience to the NEW TESTAMENT (Mark 14:24; 1 Corinthians: 11:25; Hebrews 9:20). To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Exodus 20:1-7; 24:3-8.

The Priesthood Established

God established Old Testament Priesthood with Moses, Aaron and the sons of Aaron. The priesthood was later transfered to the Levi, and finally it is to be transferred to believers in Christ Jesus as a kingdom of priests. Today's priesthood of believers in Christ are equipped and anointed to serve as ministers of God's kingdom in this lost world. 1 Peter 2:5 - Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. We have the followings for discussion; Set Apart for God's Service; A Heavy Responsibility; The Priesthood of believers

Set Apart for God's Service: God instructed Moses to anoint Aaron and Aaron sons to serve Him as His priests and stand before Him on behalf of the people. Moses was also instructed to make special garments for Aaron and his sons to wear as priests. The garments were to provide dignity and honour of the priests by their designs and they were to be made by wise craftsmen filled with the spirit of wisdom (Exodus 28:1-4). The priests were to stand before God as representatives of the people with their special appearance reflecting honour and dignity. Believers should identify God's calling and anointing in their lives and apply them to serve in the ministry of priesthood.

God's callings are diverse and can manifest in various ways; some are glaring, others are not often noticed. God's calling helps us identify His purpose for our lives and how we can be useful in His ministry. Those who are prepared to work in God's ministry must be consecrated for His service (Exodus 29:44-46). Consecration of believers to the Lord means they are set apart from sinful activities, and to belong to God.

A Heavy Responsibility: The priest were required to be fully committed to the religious activities and carry out the ordinances with perfect hearts (Exodus 28:26-30). They were to make sacrifices on behalf of the people and intercede for them before God . Likewise God wants those who are working in His kingdom to be dedicated to the tasks set before them. They must conduct themselves very well and depend on God for progress of His ministry.

Aaron would attach gold plate in which the words, HOLINESS TO THE LORD was engraved to headpiece of his forehead. That was to remind people that they represented the holy God and that they were to reflect His holiness in their lives (Exodus 28:36-38 ). The Israelites were to distinguish themselves from pagan nations around and be holy just as God is holy. New Testament Christians are to pursue holiness in response to God's promise that they have been made His children with His word written in their hearts.

In the old testament the priests were made from the tribe of Levi of the people of Israel. God's presence was confined to the tabernacle, and only the Chief Priest can go to His presence to intercede for the people. But today, God has made Christians His priests and representatives in this world (1 Peter 2:4-10). All believers who follow Christ and allow his presence to dwell with them now have direct access to God's presence to pray for themselves and intercede for others as well. Instead of the old practice that involved offering of animals as sacrifice, God now wants our sacrifices to be offered in spirit. Our consecration, service and worship of God would now be in spirit (Romans 12:1;Hebrews 13:15). Christ is the foundation, the cornerstone upon whom our ministry should be built.

We should understand significance of our callings as Christians and remain committed to the task ahead in order to receive blessings that follow obedience. We are to proclaim the glorious gospel of salvation through Christ to all people. Before we found the wonderful light of God's presence, we were lost in darkness. Now that we have the light and work in the kingdom ministry, we should treat our callings with utmost respect and honour. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Exodus 28: 1 thru 29:1-40

Experiencing the Resurrection (Easter)

Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life, through him we find the hope of life after death. We will be the most miserable believers if our hope in Christ is limited to life on this earth. The power that raised Christ from death is alive and will enable those who believe in him to witness his resurrection. Philippians 3:10 - That I may know him (Christ), and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. We have the followings for discussion: Recognising the Risen Christ; Relationship with the Risen Christ; Restored by the Risen Christ.

Recognising the Risen Christ: Mary Magdalene whom Jesus delivered from demons was the first person to see the risen Jesus. She discovered that the stoned had been rolled away from the tomb, and tomb was empty (John 20:1,11-15). She was disturbed, thinking Christ's corpse had been stolen, but she was told to hold her peace because Christ had risen as promised. A moment later the resurrected Christ appeared to her but she couldn't recognise him as she was filled with grief. She later recognised Jesus when he called her name, then her grief was replaced with joy. Jesus commanded her to go and tell his disciples about his resurrection. Christians should not allow worries and challenges to make them loose focus on Christ.

Relationship with the Risen Christ: Jesus continued to show himself to his troubled disciples. He appeared to two of his troubled followers and rebuked them on their their failure to understand what the scriptures had stated concerning his death and resurrection (Luke 24:13-17; 26-27). When we are faced with crisis situation and become discouraged that we seem to question God's presence with us, we just have to remember that the living Saviour we are servings will not forget about us. The two followers were enlightened in the scriptures and encouraged by the risen Saviour. With the presence of resurrected Christ their grief and disappointment were removed and they were given the courage to spread the good news.

Restored by the Risen Christ: Jesus appeared to the disciples a number of times after his resurrection. On one of his appearances Jesus assured Peter that he was still the 'Rock' upon whom His Church would be built, despite he was denied by him at the crucifixion. He asked Peter three times if he loved him; the questions were to determine the dept of the love Peter had for Christ (John 21: 1-2; 15-18) after previous denial. Consequently, Peter learned that love for God should be shown by affection and care for others.

Peter was restored by the risen Savour to God's service. Jesus told Peter to feed his sheep (the followers) after responses affirming his commitment (John 21:17-19). He would occupy special position and play crucial roles of uniting and caring for fellow believers. All Christians today are expected to respond the way Peter responded whenever they are called for service in the Church; they must care for others and spread the gospel. In the face of any challenges we must remember that the resurrected Saviour is alive and ready to intervene on our behalf. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Luke 24:13-35; John 20:1-18; 21:1-23.

Time and Eternity
We were not created by chance, God created us for His glorious purposes: to serve Him, appreciate His work, manage His gifts very well and care for others. He is the beginning and works through the time to sustain our lives and give us the expected end. Ecclesiastes 3:14 - I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him. We have the followings for discussion: A Time for everything; Eternity in our Hearts and God's sovereignty and Human Mortality.

A Time for everything: We plan with the time and set targets to achieve results within a specified period of time. Time marks the division between the beginning and the end of life events (Ecclesiastes 3:1-3). The book of Ecclesiastes invites us to understand purpose of living and divine attributes about life. God gives us the life to pursue His eternal purposes and provides earthly resources as His free gifts, but if we fail to appreciate Him our accomplishments are meaningless. We must allow God to direct our steps and guide us through our actions. Life situations often follow God's plan, therefore we should see Him through our situations. If we find ourselves in the mood of rejoicing we should not look down on others who have different experiences.

Likewise if we are down and it seems like things are not working well as we could have expected we should not be completely overwhelmed and become depressed. We should look up to God and allow His Spirit to lead us through shifting circumstances. Life is full of changes only God never changes, and can give lasting joy and peace. During the season of joy we should not be selfish and forget about the needs of others. Likewise we should not forget about God's promises during our season of sorrow. He will strengthen and help us grow spiritually during the process.

Eternity in Our Hearts: God's purpose for our lives aims to help us through life and prepare us for eternal life. We can't just gain His eternal life without doing what He demands of us. God assigns responsibilities to those who are made His people. As part of His divine plan He promised to make every component of life beautiful in its own time (Ecclesiastes 3:9-13). God's provision of eternity is not far off, it has already been placed in our hearts because we believe in Him and live by His truth.

God has placed knowledge of His existence and divine acts in us. His eternal purpose for our lives can not be understood by sense and reasoning, it is beyond human explanation (Ecclesiastes 3:14). His divine power requires deep spiritual reverence to understand. God's purpose of life and His eventual judgement are as described. The only way people will not be found wanting at the judgment is when they satisfy the required standard of holiness through saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

God Sovereignty and Human Mortality: We may not like to think about death, but it is an inevitable end of our existence on earth; knowing it's reality should help us set priorities for living (Ecclesiastes 9:1-6). Our wealth, position and achievements can not stop death. While we are alive and have the grace to enjoy God's free gifts we should live with purpose. The dead could not do anything again about living, and nothing can be done by those who are alive to help the dead. God will evaluate all lives and judge people according to their deeds while on earth. There is much to life after death. People should should live according to God's purpose if they want to make eternal life.

Prayers can no longer work for the dead, they will remain unconscious in the grave until they are raised to face the judgement, nothing again can be added or removed from their earthly records (Ecclesiastes 9:7-10). Life had been lived and the record book closed. The life after death will offer blessing and curse, eternal reward and eternal judgement, all people shall be rewarded according to their deeds. To God be the glory. lesson texts: Ecclesiastes 3:1-15; 9 1-10

Authorities and Friends
If we truly obey God and submit to His will we must obey and submit to earthly authority. God ordained authority and demands our obedience and submission to it. Ecclesiastes 7:19 strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city. We have the followings for discussion: Dealing With Injustice; Obeying Authorities; Benefits of companionship

Dealing with Injustice: Injustice is found in all places and can bring about unexpected reactions in the society. Such reactions can be to express displeasure or put up a defence that can spoil interpersonal relationships. Injustice can also result in disobedience to the authority. Christians should respond to injustice with the scriptural principle; our reactions should promote justices, build relationships and help the authority realize faults and adjust.

Misplacement of justice has turned the world upside down, wickedness and iniquity are commonly seen where correct judgment and justice are expected (Ecclesiastes 3:16-17). Likewise immorality and evil are often discovered where righteousness and morality are expected. Willingness to satisfy selfish desires hinders justice even in an environment that promotes justice. We should rely on God and ask for His grace and wisdom to act rightly and do justice. Christians should not loose hope when justice is turned down, God is still in control and will bring wrongs unto judgement. He will resolve all issues and overrule injustices. Those who receive God's offer of forgiveness and redemption will be given the grace to faithfully serve Him.

We can easily be discouraged as a result of oppression and injustice done to the poor by the rich and influential and think nothing is worth pursuing again on earth (Ecclesiastes 4:1-6). Instead of being overwhelmed and loosing interest in making progress we should pursue life of inner peace and contentment which can give hope, joy and happiness.

Obeying Authority: God commanded people to obey authorities. Our obedience to the authority is to recognise and honour God as the Source of authority (Ecclesiastes 8:1-5). Irrespective of the injustice and oppression in the society we must recognise and obey the authority. But we can disregard the authority if it makes it difficult or impossible to do the will of God. In such a situation we need to apply God's wisdom and follow righteous living. Obedience to human authority is obedience to God provided it is possible to pursue godly and righteous living. Our testimony as Christians will be judged based on obedience to lawgivers. All people appointed, elected or employed to leadership positions must be recognized, respected and honoured. God demands our submission to the authorities (Romans 13).

God has the ultimate authority and will bring all things to His divine judgement (Ecclesiastes 8:11-13). In the society today there is growing leniency toward evil and minor punishment is served to brutal crime. This has caused widespread moral breakdown. We should not be discouraged, we just need to put trust in God and have it in mind that He will judge the evil and condemn the wicked at His own time. Those who are saved must received the divine mandate to share God's word and lead others to Him.

Benefits of Companionship: A meaningful and purposeful life is a life shared with others (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). It is not profitable for a person to live a life that offers no benefits to anyone. Life is well lived if others are helped and supported; lonely and hardworking life with huge success amounts to nothing if it doesn't touch lives of others in such a way to receive love and gratitude.

For greater success and prosperity people should go beyond lonely and self-serving lives to lives shared with others. Life that embraces partnership makes it possible to share skills and embark on any task for greater returns. Also, the life shared with others hastens recovery when difficulty arises. As Christians, companionship makes it easier to pray for one another and provides greater chance of victory over discouragement, temptation and oppression. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Ecclesiastes 3:16-17; 4:1-12; 8:1-5;11-13).

Wisdom for Daily living
Everyday we decide and make choices but consequences of our choices determine the wisdom of our actions. Right choices help to achieve good results while wrong choices often result in serious consequences. People can be guided to make wise choices through God's word. We don't just read God's Word to get wisdom; we keep and apply the word to act carefully and diligently while dealing with issues. Proverbs 4:26-27. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. We have the followings for discussion: Futility of Chasing Possession; Necessity of Wise Decisions; Work wisely; Trust God.

Futility of Chasing Possessions: Running after material things and possessing them without satisfaction makes struggles a futile exercise (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12). Temporary satisfaction in possessions attracts greed and makes a person to always seek out for more and more of material things that after some times it results in lack of satisfaction and toxic worry. The wealthy and unsatisfied person will be in constant worry but the man who laboured and was satisfied will live in peace with his possessions.

It is good to pursue and acquire wealth but we should be able to leave a good legacy. Parents should be hardworking and try as much as they could to invest in the children that will succeed them. It is not good enough for someone to spend time and energy pursing material things and amassing wealth without consideration for a secured future for others (Ecclesiastes 5:13-17). Human labour for possessions is futile if people wouldn't identify and do things that have eternal value. Life will always present unending challenges, struggles and dissatisfactions; those who depend on God and use His wisdom to set priorities and pursue the most important things will live satisfactory and fulfilling lives.

Necessity of Wise Decisions: Godly wisdom is required to make good decisions and right choices that will lead to success and happiness. When we apply godly wisdom we will be in a better position to raise those who have fallen as a result of wrong choices and help others make wise decisions (Ecclesiastes 10:1-7). Wise decision is needed to relate with others and treat issues about the authorities carefully well. When the authority is not fair to us or doesn't treat us as expected, we shouldn't respond carelessly; we should trust God and respond by wisdom. He equips those who trust Him to deal with life's injustices and human failings.

Life activities involve risks and rewards. We can not stop doing the work that will help us accomplish our goals even if it involves risks Ecclesiastes 10:8-12). Fear of failure, costs or other risks should not stop us from doing the tasks that offer potential blessings. All we need is wisdom of God that will guide us to adopt and apply practical skills that will make the work easier and more effective. Sometimes opportunities can lead to losses, we need to be very wise and cautious and avoid unnecessary risks while pursuing goals. Also, we should guard against behaviours and speeches that can cause problems where we are pursing our goals (verse 12).

Work Wisely; Trust God: Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 teaches us to take investment risk, meet needs of others and invest wisely. Investment is like a sown seed. The seed must be buried somewhere it will break down, rise again and after many days produce many good fruits. We also find the counsel about diversifying investments to reduce risks. If one fails others should give hope. If we follow God's word and apply His wisdom we will hasten our success and help others to succeed. God's freely given resources are not only to meet our needs and give us pleasure; they must be used to appreciate and glorify Him.

As we convert God's given resources to our possessions we are reminded to acknowledge His control over the resources and trust Him with our lives. He gives the life and supports it with good things. While we enjoy His provisions we should faithfully serve Him. He will not disappoint us if we can invest our time and energy toward realizing His purpose for our lives. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Ecclesiastes 5:10-17; 10:1-12; 11:1-6

Principles for Kingdom Living

Christians living to become citizens of God's kingdom must know, understand and practice behaviours that reflect God's Nature on the earth. It is possible to learn and practice those behaviours when we follow Christ's teachings and ask for Holy Spirit to guide us through the life. Matthew 5:3 - Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We have the followings for discussion: Embrace True Blessedness; Be True Kingdom Citizens; Pursue True Righteousness.

Embrace True Blessedness: Jesus stated characteristics of kingdom citizens should exhibit (Matthew 5:1-9). The blessedness Jesus was talking about has to do with well being and inner contentment of God's people on this earth. He started with 'the poor in spirit'. This means the constant need of God love, mercy and grace, and the preparedness to live godly and righteous life. The second beatitude is about 'those who mourn'. This mourning has to do with regretting one's sinful condition and desiring to recognise the cost of Christ's sacrifice for forgiveness and removal of sin. The blessing for the meek has to do living by behaviours that boost confidence in God.

The blessing associated with the hunger and thirst after righteousness has to do with desire for God. The merciful are blessed. This is to help us recognise how great God's mercy is toward His people. God expects us to show mercy toward meeting spiritual and material needs of others. 'The pure in heart' are blessed for they shall see God. This blessing is not about outward religious purity such washings, rituals and religious laws. Rather it is about inner purity. Jesus blessed peacemakers for they shall be called children of God. God's greatest offer for peace is His Son, Jesus Christ. Those who believe in Christ have peace with God and can readily make peace with others.

Christ's blessedness for those being persecuted for righteousness' sake recognises that living as citizens of God's kingdom can provoke the wicked and those living without God and their actions may result in persecution (Matthew 5: 10-12). The final beatitude is about standing for Christ in persecution. Jesus assures his followers that great rewards await them in heaven. He reminds them of similar persecution against prophets in the past and makes it known that persecution for his gospel's sake will lead to rich reward.

Be True Kingdom Citizens: Jesus says kingdom citizens are the salt of the earth (Matthew 5:13). He wants those living for God's kingdom to be like the salt. Salt is used to preserve and add flavour to food. Kingdom citizens are expected to bring good flavour to the society and lead godly and righteous living which can reflect God's nature. We must preserve the character for godly living. Such character must not be leached out of our lives if we desire to be useful for God's purpose at all times.

Kingdom citizens are also described as the light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16), that is useful and quality light. Good and bright light shines through the darkness and reveals whatever is hidden. Good works are not meant to be hidden. God's people must be known for all things that are good. Jesus wants our good works to shine as a radiant light and communicate message of Hope for God's kingdom.

Pursue True Righteousness. Jesus showed that true righteousness can only be pursued when we live in obedience to God's word (Matthew 5:17-20). He said he didn't come to do away with the prophets, but to fulfil God's law; to show its true meaning and underline purpose. Those who cut even the smallest commandment out of their teachings will have a very small place in God's kingdom. Christ also warned concerning righteousness those who want to make kingdom of heaven must reflect. The righteousness must go beyond the outward form to faithful and righteous living from the heart.

Those living as kingdom citizens must aim for God's perfection. Jesus wants us to be perfect (Matthew 5:21-24; 27-30; 43-48). He warns against being angry with another person. Anger can result in behaviours that can tear down person's reputation and destroy good characters. He compares such behaviours to murder. He encourages people to reconcile as soon as possible with those who are offended (verse 23&24).

Jesus made it know that lustful looking at a woman carries the same condemnation as the real act adultery and warned concerning all acts that will not make it possible to enter into God's kingdom. That people living for God's kingdom must do away with such acts (verses 27-30). He wants people to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them as an act of showing true love and kindness of God. Lesson texts: Matthew 5:1-48.

Practices for Kingdom living

Jesus continued his preachings on practices for kingdom living and eternal rewards from God . He made it known that God's kingdom requires making choices and doing things that honour and please God. The kingdom lifestyle requires that God's people practise spiritual discipline, put their trust in God and value things that help to advance His kingdom. Matthew 6: 3 - Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall shall be added unto you. We have the followings for discussion: Choose God rewards; Live free from materialism; Give God's Kingdom Priority.

Choose God's Rewards: Jesus was teaching people how their lives and relationships with others can earn them God's rewards. Spiritual discipline is required to live a purposeful and blessed life. Alms giving, prayer, and fasting are considered as three basic acts (service and commitment) through which God rewards His people. Jesus warned against acts of giving that dishonours God. Giving with the intention for people to see and praise has no heaven's rewards. such act of giving is practised by hypocrites and meant to steal glory that belongs to God (Matthew 6:1-4). Whatever people do for outward show, and not truly from their hearts has no expression of trust and devotion. Such act can not make people righteous before God, therefore it has no reward.

Jesus also preached concerning proper motives about prayer. Private prayer should be said in one's closet and if possible person at the next door should not hear what the mouth is saying. Some people pray to impress others rather than to connect with God (Matthew 6:5-8 ). There is nothing wrong in public prayers; but such prayers should connect us with God rather than to seek public attention. Long, drawn-out prayer and repetition don't bring answers to prayers. God already knows our needs we just need to express faith that He sees, hears and knows.

Jesus wants people to fast with proper motives. It is totally wrong if fasting is meant to catch public attention. Fasting is a spiritual exercise which helps to train minds and bodies for righteousness, and to honour God. Fasting will be for self-service and the rewards will be temporary if it done to receive praises and approval of people (Matthew 6:16-18).

Live Free of Materialism: Jesus wants God's people to have strong desire for eternal treasure instead of seeking after material prosperity all the time. Unrestricted desire for material prosperity can rob people of the opportunity to gain eternal treasures. Jesus is not against material possession and saving money to acquire good things of life. Rather He is teaching people to seek after treasures that reflect the glory of God. Wealth, treasure or possession that robs our precious time and devotion for God is an idol we must avoid for kingdom living and eternal reward. Christians should lay their treasures in heaven (Mathew 6:19-21). God provides what we need to advance His kingdom and bring glory to His name.

Jesus wants our eyes to be focused on things that have eternal values. It is by doing this that our desires and passions can be pure and our spiritual eyesight healthy, then we shall be able to live for the right things with the right reasons (Mathew 6:22-24). There is hostile relationship between living for God and desiring for material things. So Christians are called to hold more unto what is valuable to God (salvation) than what is valuable to the world (riches).

Give God's kingdom Priority: Jesus teaches us to trust God for He is concerned about our needs. If we believe God cares for us and helps to meet needs we will no longer be overburdened by worrying about daily necessities. If it is possible for other creatures that they don't worry for things they need in the future, it will be much easier for God's people to a live a life that is not characterised by daily struggle for daily necessity (Matthew 6:25-30). Our Heavenly Father provides daily even for other creatures which are less valued. Therefore He will provide for us if we diligently seek and trust Him. Our faith, trust, obedience and devotion are required to receive from God.

Jesus doesn't want us to be consumed by worrying and anxiety over our needs, rather he gives us the assurance of God's provision for daily necessities. However we must seek first the kingdom of God (Mathew 6:31-34) and our focus in daily living should be on God, His kingdom and righteousness - on eternity, rather than temporary problems on earth. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 6:1-34

Choose to obey Christ's teachings

Christ teachings are about how people can understand the true nature of God and do His will. Believers who base their lives on Christ's message (God's word in its clearest form) will find it so easy to live godly and peaceful life. Christ teachings provide ways to resolve difficult issues that can arise from relationships with others. Matthew 7:24 - Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. We have the followings for discussion: Choose to view others wisely; Choose to trust God; Choose to follow Christ.

Choose to View Others Wisely: While continuing his teachings Christ warned against judging others. He said, "judge not that ye be not judged". He is making it known that unfair treatment of others and unjust discrimination is ungodly and should be avoided. He is addressing a situation whereby some people make themselves relevant by tearing others down (Matthew 7:1-5). Jesus is not saying we should not be concerned about moral and spiritual condition of others. He wants us to guard against having rigid, scornful or disdainful attitude towards others. He wants us to love and intercede for them.

People can be spiritually blinded to see their own faults before condemning others for their faults. They should first recognise their needs, deal with their problems and ask for forgiveness before they can help others. Jesus was also teaching people to humble themselves, realize their sinful and broken condition while trying to help others. They should also understand truthfulness of their worship of God (verse 7) and discern someone's attitude towards the gospel.

Choose to Trust God: Jesus taught that people should put trusting God in continuous action to receive from Him. God responds to persistent faith shown by His children (Matthew 7:7-8 ). Faith that does not persevere in doubt makes it possible for believers to keep asking, seeking and knocking until God hears and answers. God can answer at the moment of asking. He can also delay or decide not to respond. He knows what is good for His people and the appropriate time to provide it.

Jesus also made it known that God is our Heavenly Father who will give us things that are good for our lives (Matthew 7:9-12). If it is possible for earthly fathers to provide good things for their children, God will provide much more for those who trust Him. when God delays His provision, we should have it in mind that He has the best reason and wouldn't want to give what can harm us.

Choose to Follow Christ: Jesus showed that our eternal destiny is chosen by us. People can choose how they want to live and where they want to be. He admonished believers to enter in at a 'strait gate' that leads to eternal life (Matthew 7:13&14). It is not just easy to enter the narrow gate; it requires efforts to do so. The gate leading to eternal destruction is broad and many enter into it. Believers should therefore decide concerning the two roads for their eternal destiny. The narrow way that leads to eternal life is in Christ, only a few people find it. Those who follow Christ's example and teachings will find the way.

Jesus warned concerning those leading others to the way of destruction; they can pretend to be good but they are evil. They can even act as the preachers of God's word, but they are not. Believers will escape being drawn into their error when they allow the Spirit of God to lead them and interpret their messages. The sign of true discipleship is not by confession, profession or wonderful works. Those who obey God and do His will as revealed by Christ will be the wise people building on the solid foundation (Matthew 7:15-27).To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 7:1-27.

Parables about the Kingdom
Christ gave the following parables to describe people's attitude toward the kingdom of God. The way of kingdom is open to all but only a few people consider it. The value of the kingdom of God surpasses anything on earth we may consider as thing of joy and happiness. As described by Jesus God's kingdom is about the present and future realities. Romans 14:17 - The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. We have the followings for discussion: Growth in the Kingdom; Surpassing Value of the Kingdom; Future of the Kingdom.

Growth in the Kingdom: Jesus used parables to describe people's attitude toward kingdom of God. The first parable could be described as "The parable of the Soils" though many believe it is "The parable of the Sower. The parable describes hearts of people toward the Word of Life as different kinds of soils (Matthew 13:18-23). God's word to some people is like a seed that fell on the path, which is trampled and eaten by the birds. The soil describes a person who hears the Word but lacks understanding. The second type of soil is rocky; it contains some topsoil, but not enough to sustain long-term growth and establishment.
This describes a person who responds at first but couldn't endure challenges.

The third type of soil is good but filled with thorns, the seed grows on it but will be chocked eventually. This describes the situation when cares of the world make it impossible to continue living by God's word. The last soil is good and fertile for growth. This represents a person who hears the Word, receives it and brings others to God. Those who want to make heaven should receive God's message, save their lives and make sure they touch and save lives of others with the help of Holy Spirit.

Jesus continued with the parable of the Mustard Seed. He wants the kingdom work to expand rapidly even from the smallest beginnings (Matthew 13:31-33). The parable demonstrates the need to overcome all odds and increase over time. The kingdom activities should not be stagnated on account of the size at the beginning. As the kingdom is expanding believers should spread the message in such an way to transform and save lives.

Surpassing Value of the Kingdom: Jesus also used two parables to illustrate the extraordinary and surpassing value of God's eternal kingdom (Matthew 13:44-46). God's eternal kingdom is like a hidden treasure which is worth more than all valuable things of the earth. Jesus stated that the kingdom of heaven is worth all sacrifice to get it. Nothing compares to entering into God's kingdom. All things of the earth are temporary and will pass away but God's kingdom lasts to eternity. Ultimate priority must be given to matters of eternal realities. Christians should make kingdom of heaven their primary pursuits on earth.

Future of the Kingdom: Jesus gave another parable which describes the world as field in which the enemy sowed tares among good seeds. Jesus is the landowner, the One who sowed the good seeds - children of the kingdom, while devil is the enemy who sowed the tares - the wicked ones (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43). Jesus doesn't want God's people to judge the wicked. God will separate the wicked from His people and deliver them over to eternal punishment on the day of judgment. While it may be difficult to differentiate those truly living as children of the kingdom from those being used by Satan to corrupt Church's testimony, Christians are not to judge anyone. God knows everyone and will judge righteously.

In another parable which is like the parable of wheat and tares Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a fishermen dragnet which picked different kinds of fish. The fishermen would separate the good fish from the bad ones (Matthew 13:47-50). God will allow different people to come to the Church and learn of Him, only those who truly surrender their lives to lordship of Jesus Christ will be part of His kingdom. Those who want to be part of God's kingdom must conform o the image of His Son (Romans 8:29; 1 Corinthians 14:49). To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 13:1-52.

Be Filled with the Spirit (Pentecost)

As this week marks the Pentecost week, Christians are expected to long for and invite Holy Spirit into their lives. A Christian without the Holy Spirit is an empty Christian. Holy Spirit is the power that enables Christians to live victoriously and please God. He teaches and reminds Christians of things about God, His kingdom and godly lifestyle. God wants everyone who is willing to receive Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18 -19. Be filled with the Holy Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. We have the followings for discussion: Filled with the Spirit; Spirit-Filled Living;Spirit-Filled Unity and Service.

Filled with the Spirit: God gives His Spirit to those who are living to accomplish His purpose. He took of His Spirit that rested upon Moses and gave it to seventy elders to enable them perform leadership roles for success of His work (Number 11:24-29). It was after the elders had received spiritual empowerment that they were able to relieve Moses of the leadership workload and prophesy. Today God wants all Christians to have the main ingredient (Holy Spirit) required for success in spiritual leadership and to continue in faith.

Distribution of God's Spirit to the seventy elders who worked with Moses foreshadowed the great outpouring of Holy Spirit upon the Early Church (Acts 2:1-4). Physical manifestation of Holy Spirit has continued since the time a group of 120 disciples received the promised gift in Jerusalem. It can not be possible for Churches to minister effectively without the power of Holy Spirit. It wasn't possible for the Early Church to witness for Christ until disciples received spiritual empowerment. Peter had thought of going back to his previous work before he received the power for God's service. Today God fills people with His Spirit and uses them in various ways.

The Spirit fills and equips the Church to spread gospel to all people and nations. Christians can reach all nations with the gospel and share the message effectively when they are baptised in the Holy Spirit. God's promise of Holy Spirit is for all, as prophesied by Joel in the Old Testament (Joel 2:28-29).

Spirit-Filled Living: Spirit-filled living encourages true fellowship; it encourages genuine worship of God and caring for others (Acts 2:41-47). For Christians to live a spirit-filled life they must continue to worship, fellowship, pray and grow in the knowledge of the scriptures. Our life in the spirit must be evident to all that God dwells in us, and we love one another (John 13:35).

Holy Spirit impacts and transforms lives of believers. We should obey God's word and submit our selves to one another in the fear of God (Ephesians 5:18-21). A spirit-filled life makes it possible to avoid destructive work of the flesh (Galatians 5: 19-21) and embrace the life that bears godly fruits (Christlike characters, Galatians 5:22-25). Those characters depict the right relationship with God and others.

Spirit-Filled Unity and Service: The spirit of God unites believers and makes it easier to have concern for the others. We must follow example of the love, compassion and self-sacrifice of the Early Church to consider others and strive to meet their material needs. Holy Spirit gives the power and enablement to meet needs. Holy Spirit is the strength, the power and the wisdom we need to minister effectively and transform lives (2 Corinthians 3:5-6; Romans 7:9-11; 1 Peter 4:11). To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Numbers 11:10-29; Acts 2:1-17, 41-47; 4:31-35; 2 Corinthians 3:1-8; Galatians 5:22-26; Ephesians 5:18-21.

Kingdom Values
The kingdom of God is not about satisfying self based on worldly things, it is about aligning one's life with the kingdom values. Christians should practice things on which God places values. Jesus mentioned humility, forgiveness and faithful service as valuable practices for those seeking the kingdom of God. Matthew 18:14 - It is not the will of your heavenly Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish. We have the followings for discussion: Embrace Humility; Value Every Believer; Practice Forgiveness.

Embrace Humility: Those who want to inherit God's kingdom must humble themselves in the fear of God and relationships with others. When disciples asked Jesus about the greatest person in the kingdom of God, he responded that those who want to be great in God's kingdom must be humble as the little children (Mathew 18:1-5); they must not hide bitterness in their hearts. Character of a child is closest to requirement for kingdom living.

Humility is the first striking character found in a little child. Thus it is considered as the foundation upon which all spiritual values are built. Life of prayer, worship of God, fellowship with others, reading and obedience to the word of God, loving and caring for others are built upon humility. We have much to learn from children's model of humility. They neither pretend nor hide emotions. They are plain and honest. Believers must be honest and humble themselves before God.

Value Every believers: Jesus warned his followers not to cause others to stumble. He stated that those who harm the 'little ones' would be severely dealt with at the judgment (Matthew 18:6-9). Jesus was referring to those who were child-like in faith as the 'little ones'. By putting a stumbling block in their ways, setting traps for them, taking advantage of their weaknesses and treating them harshly in such a way to discourage them, a person displays acts of offence against the little ones. Those willing to harm the ones loved by God shouldn't have lived to await His judgement. God wants people to love one another and reflect the values ascribed to His kingdom.

Every individual is important and of inestimable worth to God. Each believer is described as the 'little ones' and has been assigned an angel for God's protection. Jesus also used the parable of the Lost Sheep to illustrated the value God places on every believer. If one out hundred sheep is gone astray, the shepherd will track it down until it is found. God desires no one to be lost but to come to repentance and live to gain His salvation (Mathew 18:10-14). All believers are valuable to God, even those who don't have much money or gifts to contribute to the Church are no less important to Him. God demands fair treatment to all.

Practice Forgiveness: Jesus taught the disciples concerning practice of forgiveness (Matthew 18: 15-22). Peter had learnt the best practice of forgiveness in Christ that he demanded beyond three times stipulated in the law to seven times that a person should be offended. Jesus answer was yet another surprise. He said a person should be offended seventy times seven (490) times before he would react. He stated this to show that forgiveness has no limits. He doesn't want believers to nurse aggression or open their hearts to bitterness toward one another. Anyone that is offended should go to the offending brother, or sister and show him his fault. Through reconciliation we demonstrate God's love and offer freedom, but if a person rejects reconciliation he remains 'bound' by sin.

It is required of all believers to forgive and forget. Jesus used another parable to illustrate this. He talked about a servant whose debt was forgiven but couldn't forgive the one indebted to him. He was pardoned and forgiven a debt he couldn't have repaid. When it was his turn to show mercy and pardon someone else he lacked compassion (Matthew 18:23-25). The wicked ones will be severely punished, but those who exhibit Christian values as thought by Christ will obtain mercy. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 18:1-35.

Christ-Focused Living
Living for Christ doesn't mean all will be smooth. There would be challenges to test faith and show the level of our maturity as Christians and commitment to the ministry. It will always be difficult to live a faithful life because: Satan is still in the world; many are hostile to Christian faith, and we are struggling with self-serving desires. All these are threats to Christian faith. Philippians 1:21 - For to me to live is Christ, to die is gain. We have the followings for discussion: Remain Committed to Christ; Maintain Confidence in Christ's Word; Faithfully Serve Christ.

Remain Committed to Christ: Jesus foretold the life events that would be the order of last days and the signs that would accompany his second coming. He talked about the difficult times ahead for the Church. False teachers and preachers will rise and spread wrong information that will weaken faith and cause many to reject the gospel. He also foretold disastrous things that would be increasing by the days and betrayal by those trusted (Matthew 24:1-12). Persecution should be seen as normal to Christian life; Christ experienced it while on earth. Trials and persecution should strengthen Christian faith (John 15:18-19; Peter 4:12-14). All we need do is to remain faithful and rest our hope fully in God.

Satan knows great benefits await those who overcome the world. Thus he makes it so difficult to succeed in living for God. While his threats to faith continues Christians are encouraged to keep their allegiance to Christ and maintain their stand for God. There is no crown without the Cross, great cost is attached to eternal gains. Satan brings persecution to destroy Christian faith but God uses it to strengthen faith and purify those who belong to Him. We just have to trust and obey God, He will not forsake us nor allow what will destroy our testimonies as His children (Hebrews 13:5; 1 Corinthians 10:13. It is required that Christians don't look back or deny faith (Luke 9:62). God doesn't promise the life that will be a bed of roses. There will be pains and problems, but we shall have hope in God.

Maintain Confidence in Christ: Jesus warned concerning the false prophets whose activities will be to distort teachings of the scripture by mixing error with the truth. Many will be victims of their false claims, and with demonic powers they shall perform signs and wonders. If they have their ways they would convince those chosen by God and cause them to fall (Matthew 24:23-28).

Christians will not fall to false claim and deception if they firmly hold onto God's word (2 Corinthians 11:13-15; I Timothy 4:1-2; 2 Timothy 4:1-4). Jesus warned that we should not believe those staying at specified locations and claiming to be Christ. His second coming will be followed by visible lightning that all will see. Beware of false teaching and deception at places of worship. False preachers seek to satisfy selfish desires and distract believer's attention from the kingdom building.

Jesus also foretold what will come after the tribulation of "those days" and the signs of his second coming (Matthew 24:29-35). Even during and after the destruction of the time of his coming, one thing is certain, Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my word shall not pass away" (verse 35). We must receive God's word and hold fast to His promises. As His word is truth (John 17:17), His promises will also come true.

Faithfully serve Christ: Christ will return at the time and day known to God only. Jesus gave the signs of end-time, but as regards the exact time he is calling God's people to watch and be prepared. Obedience and readiness is required to escape destruction that will be similar to the experience of the Noah's day (Matthew 24:36-44).

The wicked will not escape with their evils. God will bring all things to judgement. He desires that all people are saved, but those who reject His love and follow their own selfish ways will be condemned. All people will one day stand before God and each will give an account of how he or she spent his or her life. Christ has given the warning about his second coming, so there will be no excuse for unpreparedness.

As a responsible steward Jesus illustrated the need to always be prepared for the master's return (Matthew 24:45-51). Anytime the master returns he will like hear good accounts of the work assigned to the stewards. He will reward the faithful and conscientious steward while the cruel and unfaithful steward will be punished. Christ's parable here passes a message that his return will be at an unexpected time. He wouldn't want us to be found wanting when giving the accounts of our lives. Therefore we must love God wholeheartedly and be faithful all times. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 24:1-51.

Plead for a pure lifestyle
At the present age of civilization that people want to live for pleasure, believers are enjoined to keep the faith and guard their relationships with others. Those living for worldly pleasure will not like to follow the way of God or pursue His righteousness. Rather they will choose to mislead others and push biblical and moral values to the margin. Proverbs 1:33 - But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. We have the followings for discussion: Reject the World's Call; Heed Wisdom's Call; Abstain from Immoral Pleasures.

The book of proverbs was written more than three thousand years ago, yet it is still relevant for all societies; it discusses moral issues in such a way to have positive impacts in the lives of people. It matches godliness and moral behaviours and teaches people how to apply wisdom in all they do. Many societies today are doing things their own way, viewing concept of purity as antiquated and not applicable to the enlightened world. God's standard for right and wrong is far different from what worldly societies hold. God's message is the only foundation for life of purity and righteousness (Proverbs 1:10-14). Desire to live ungodly life leads to involvement in desperate acts which eventually results in tragic end. Christians should reject enticement of the world and not allow its pleasure to make them loose eternal focus.

Reject World's Call: We should heed the Bible warning to not join and agree with criminals. Their deeds are evil; they can plan at any time to terminate life and destroy property, and in their violence they set themselves up for tragedy (Proverbs 1:15-19). The way of sinner should be avoided because it will not end well. Christians should choose and follow the way of God which leads to divine blessings. The enticing path leads to destructive end.

Heed wisdom's Call: True wisdom is of God. It contrasts with human understanding and definition of wisdom. Divine wisdom goes beyond knowledge and common sense. It involves having God's spirit for discerning, inspiration and understanding. One can be wiser with little education than a well trained person (Proverbs: 1:20-22). Divine wisdom warns three categories of people: the simple, the scorner and the fools. The simple believe they can live the way they like without negative consequences; the scorners disregard God while the fools reject His existence, or believe if He exists, has no interest in affairs of human beings.

It is through divine wisdom believers can adhere to priorities of God and reject the world value. God wants those who believe in Him to live by His wisdom. Hearts that receive His wisdfom will understand His work and know the truth about Him. Those who reject wisdom and the call to pure life will pay the awful price in the end (Proverbs 1:23-33). Living without God and rejecting His way of peace will definitely lead to ruin. It is when we follow His way and obey Him that we can be assured of true security and peace of mind.

Abstain from Immoral Pleasures: Pure lifestyle can only be lived when we follow the requirements for godly living and act accordingly. We should learn and practice the word of God. His law and commandments should be written upon the table of our hearts (Deuteronomy 6:8 ). As we do this divine wisdom will come and manifest as a gift. It is by God's wisdom believers are protected from falling into temptation of immoral behaviour (Proverbs 7:1-5). Solomon increased in wisdom as he drew closer to God and put aside sensual pleasures. Sexual temptation can be so powerful but if we obey God's word and apply the wisdom we can reject it and stay pure.

Temptation has real consequences. Actions that involve physical, relational and spiritual risks can lead to tragedy (Proverbs 7: 21-27). Through purity Christians can deal with and overcome sexual temptation. Resist the lust and don't be filled with the thought. The consequences include broken physical and spiritual relationships, emotional turmoil, diseases among others. Deep thoughts and desires are required to live a pure life and reject the enticement for sensual pleasures which aims to prevent blessings of God. Glory be to God. Lesson texts: Proverbs: 1:10-33; 7:1-5; 21-27.

Financial Wisdom
It's God's will that His people are wise in all aspects of life. Foolish decision and act make it difficulty to enjoy God's gracious provisions. We are so lucky for knowing God and following His way, our hope is beyond this world. This lesson wants us to follow financial advice from Proverbs and manage our money wisely. The way we handle money should reflect our trust in God and provide for eternal purpose. Money shouldn't be for self-satisfaction and enjoyment, it must be used to advance God's kingdom. Luke 16:11 - therefore if ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? We have these for discussion: Adopt a Biblical Work Ethic; On Lending and Borrowing, and Build a good Reputation.

Adopt a Biblical Work Ethics: There is no hope for success in laziness. Laziness leads to destruction as the behaviour has to do with procrastination, failure to plan for the future, willingness to be idle and lack of interest in taking responsibility (proverbs 6:6-11). Laziness is conceived in the heart and if it overtakes one's life denies a person sense of effective planning and responsibility. In order to succeed we must plan ahead and work toward getting the best result. The foolish and indolent will find an excuse to sleep than work and provide for the future. Laziness has nothing to offer than financial stress and hopelessness.

People of God must find good work to do. Work brings rewards and removes poverty. Though it's often hard to do, it is necessary for joyful and heathy living, and the reward can not be underestimated. Christians should not be engaged with get rich quick scheme because it ends up in loosing hard-earned money. ( Proverbs 26:13-16; 28:19 &22). The scheme is meant to swindle and exploit unsuspecting victim. Biblical work ethics are rooted in honest dealings and fair profits.

On Lending and Borrowing: The issue of lending and borrowing is so complex that it will only take God's grace to satisfy biblical recommendations. It's both good and risky to borrow for living. It's not good to live by debt, and it is very bad to exploit others when they borrow money. Debt can bring serious financial disaster and strained relationship (Proverbs 6:1-5). It even robs the grace of quality service for God, and can limit the ability to participate effectively in the ministry.

We shouldn't indulge in practices that can lead to poverty. Likewise it is unwise to accept responsibility for someone else's debt. Do not guarantee debt you are not sure can be repaid by the borrower. If possible Christians that have the potential to lend others must do it free of interest, and the person being helped should not make financial commitment that cannot be kept. Money borrowed should be paid back according to the repayment plan.

There are various reasons why people go for debt, but whatever the reason such debt must be reasonable and manageable. Debt should not be secured for a lifestyle beyond one's means. If such is done financial success may not be achieved. Unhealthy desires for wealth lead to sufferings and slavery. Borrower becomes a slave to the lender (Proverbs 22:7). Instead of borrowing and living as a slave Christians must be content with the available resources and ensure they extol virtues of godly perspectives (Proverbs 15:16-17; 1 Timothy 6:6).

Build a Good Reputation: It very important to value and keep a good name (Proverbs 22:1-2, 2&9). Our relationship with others is very important, we must be trustworthy and ready to help others with our resources. Wealth often makes people arrogant and compel them to exploit the poor. But godly wisdom motivates people to help others with their resources. Those who are generous and have good reputation will receive the blessing of God.

We are called to value kindness and generosity and ensure we are distinguished as people of God. We must reflect eternal priorities and lead others to Christ with our money. Manifestation of godly characters attracts God's blessing. Therefore we must be kind, generous and fair in our business practices, and our good reputation should make others learn about God and experience His true love (Proverbs:11:16,24-26). Generosity is not all about kind word and good intension, it must involve action. And again, Christian generosity brings hope beyond this world. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Prov: 6:1-11; 11:16,24-26; 15:16-17; 22:1-2,7,9; 26:13-16; 28:19-22.

The Mighty Tongue
Tongue can be used to shape one's life, build up others and to destroy some people . God gives us the grace to use tongues to express our thoughts and desires, as He does this for us we are expected to use words wisely and thoughtfully. Words have power and can bring about blessing or curse. Tongue is recognised as a powerful force for either good or evil. Our tongues should be used to proclaim God's kingdom, encourage and bless others. Proverbs 15:4 - A wholesome tongue is a tree of life but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. We have the followings for discussion: Use Word properly; Avoid Destructive Word, and Choose life giving Words.

Use Word Properly: We must use words properly as they can have negative and lasting effects on lives of people (Proverbs 18:21; 20:25). Words have power and can bring great benefits if they are used wisely. We should be mindful that what we say has consequences. What we say can make a way for us and others and can set as a trap as well. Those who gossip often talk carelessly and become trapped. Christians must not make promises they can not keep. Promises that are not kept are a trap.

We should have considered our resources and amount we can afford to give out before promising others. At times we can pledge more than we are able and give sacrificially. Such giving can be based on trusting God to bless us more than our expectations. We can challenge God and vow to honour Him with our substance when our prayer is answered. We shouldn't withhold the giving when such need is met no matter the amount vowed. Likewise we should not vow to give out of pity or compassion if we know we cannot keep our words. Empty promises can complicate issues and make life difficult for people.

As we don't know what the future holds we should consider matters of other time or day with some restraints (Proverbs 27:1-2; 5,21). Life is uncertain and the future is unknown therefore we should look to God to guide and help us do the correct thing. We just have to pray and hope for the best from God as He wills (James 4:13-17). It is not good enough for someone to boast of his achievements and praise himself. He should leave that for someone else to find out and assess. If the achievement is worth commendation others should value it and appreciate our contributions.

Avoid Destructive Words: Do not choose words that can stir confusion and lead to trouble. Loose lips bring trouble therefore Christians must avoid words and actions that cause trouble and erode reputation. It is bad to meddle with matter that doesn't concern you. Gossip can be appealing, but it hurts the feelings and causes great harm (Proverbs : 26:17-23). It can spark aggressive reaction and result in broken relationships.

We must not be fooled by charming words, nor should we fool others. Such flattering words mask all manners of malice and deceit (Proverbs 26: 24-28). Words of deception will definitely strain relationship and cause deep wounds and hatred. Such malice is unacceptable to God and leads to eternal consequences.

Choose Life-Giving Words: Tongue should be trained and the mouth cautioned to pronounce positive thing into one's life and the lives of others. There should be a difference between utterances of the righteous and the wicked. The righteous must be quick to hear and slow to respond to angry words. They must respond with understanding heart and not repay evil with evil.

In contrast to negative influence of the word of the foolish, Our words should promote goodness and exhibit God-given wisdom (Proverbs 15:1-2, 4,7,23 &28). Our words shouldn't hurt soul, rather they should encourage, comfort, guide and direct others rightly.

When people live by the word of God and make use of godly wisdom they will find it easier to say positive words. We should say words that can minister to fellow believers and draw unbelievers to Christ. As Christians we must live out our faith in Christ and ensure that our lifestyle matches our words. Foolish words should not proceed from our mouths (Proverbs 16:23-24). To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Proverbs 15:1-2,4,7,23,28; 16:23-24; 18:21; 20:25; 26:17-26, 28: 27:1-2,5,21.

Life-Changing Encounter With God

God is seeking for people He can use for His work. He is seeking for those who are ready to receive Him and follow His direction. Those who want to have a life-changing encounter with God must be ready for genuine repentance and get prepared for His service, and they must respond to His call with obedience . Isaiah 6:8, Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Who shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I! Send me. These we have for discussion: A Vision of God, Cleansed for service, and Commissioned to Prophesy

A vision of God: Prophet Isaiah had been doing the work of God but much wasn't known about him until the circumstance which limited his recognition was removed after the death of King Uzziah. This King's reign was accounted for as the time of prosperity and well-being. He thought the achievement was by his effort that he lifted up his heart against the ordinances of God. In the process God smote him and he was removed as the king (2 Chronicles 26:1-14).

After Uzziah's death Isaiah was given a vision in which God was revealed in Glory and holiness with heavenly beings (the Seraphims) crying out and saying Holy, Holy, Holy. Their voice was giving reference to the exalted One, the sovereign and Almighty God (Isaiah 6:1-4). From the New Testament Christ is the One God has exalted and given a name above other names. John 12: 37-47 reveals Christ as the One Isaiah had seen. God is absolutely sovereign and His power has no limitations (Isaiah 46:10; Daniel 4:35).

Isaiah saw the beautiful picture of God with the heavenly beings revealing His majesty and splendour by their display around the throne. The heavenly beings also revealed God's nature in their threefold declarations: His holiness, His perfection and probably reference to the Trinity - The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With their declarations the heavenly sanctuary was filled with God's presence and there was powerful manifestation of His glory. We must reference God and have it mind that one day we shall give an account of our lives to Him (Romans 14:12; Hebrews 13:4).

Cleansed for Service: Isaiah didn't let the vision go without response. He realised immediately that he was nothing to reckon with unless God showed mercy and save him. He cried, 'woe is me! This was when he realised his broken and spiritual bankruptcy before God. He discovered how sinful and devastated a life spent without God was and saw the need for a renewed spiritual condition (Isaiah 6:5-7). In the light of God's holiness Isaiah's sin was fully exposed and he was aware of his unworthiness. But God, being merciful responded to confession of his sin and renewed him. God is faithful and will respond to genuine repentance of a sinner (1 John 1:9).

Isaiah was called to prophetic ministry after he had been cleansed from sin (Isaiah 6:8 ). Before a believer can proceed with his calling to the ministry he must have been cleansed from sin. He must also show the willingness to do the work, and respond as Isaiah did, that is, 'Here am I send me'. All Christians are called to minister in one way or the other to those who have not been reached. God is seeking for people He will send to deliver His message and make His way known.

Commissioned to Prophecy: At first Isaiah was worried about the difficulty he would face with the people. Many had hardened their hearts and wouldn't respond to God's call for repentance (Isaiah 6:9-10). Those who continue to harden their hearts before God are in danger of His judgement. Pharaoh faced the consequences when he hardened his heart to God's judgment. Our hearts to God's message (gospel) should be like a fertile soil that can make spiritual truth grow and flourish (Matthew 13:1-23). Understanding the Bible and applying the word of God is a matter of the heart, and not the head. We must memorise the word, take it to the heart and allow it transform our lives.

We are likely to be disappointed as we reach out and preach the word because we will meet people who have hardened their hearts and opposed to the message of repentance. While the situation like this is inevitable, those doing God's work should not be discouraged. The 'holy seed' they are planting will remain. God doesn't have pleasure in punishment of sinners, rather he wants them to experience a life-changing encounter with Him. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 6:1-3.

The promised Deliverer

Jesus has fulfilled Old Testament messianic prophecies. Isaiah's prophesies give clear understanding that Jesus fulfilled what had been spoken concerning the One that would come and lead people to righteousness, godliness and secured life in God . Matthew 1:23. A virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. These we have for discussion: The deliverer is with Us; The deliverer Governs His People, and The deliverer Reigns Righteously.

The Deliverer is with Us: God had spoken through prophet Isaiah concerning His promised "Deliverer" who He would send for deliverance of His people. God revealed the birth of the deliverer by a virgin, that is would not be as a result of union between man and woman (Isaiah 7:14-16; Matthew 1:22-23). These prophesies clearly fulfilled the birth of Jesus, he was born by a virgin and there wasn't any argument about that.

The revelations about the messiah were given with possible difficulty for the children of Israel to recognise him as the One sent by God. The Bible revealed that there would be confusion among the people. To some he would be a stepping stone to God's redemptive provision while to others he would be a stumbling block, a rock of offence for them to disbelieve and continue to live in darkness, and even for their own destruction (Isaiah 8:14-15; Luke 20:17-18). Those who reject the Messiah reject God' offer of salvation and eternal life and the result is hopelessness.

The Deliverer Governs His People: Jesus Christ is revealed as the "great light" described in the prophecy (Isaiah 9:2-5). Those who have seen the light are called out the darkness to walk in the moral and spiritual light, the light of salvation. Jesus delivered the "true word" of God and described those living by it as "the Light" of the world (Matthew 4:12-16; 5:14-16). The word of God is also described as the light which reveals path of darkness and guides those willing to get out of the darkness.

Jesus is given as a Son with perfect nature of God (Isaiah 9:6-7). Continuing from his description as "a great light", other verses give the powerful description of the Messiah as the Son of God. He is given the following names: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and the Prince of Peace. As a Wonderful Counsellor Jesus has unquestionable wisdom. As a Mighty God, his mighty power will continue to work for God's people. Everlasting Father refers to the Father of eternity, the One who has authority over the creation, and as the Prince of Peace, the peace found in him has no bounds. He is still coming back to establish glorious millennium kingdom and will reign over all the earth with justice and equity. Then he shall put an end to social injustices and all people will live in peace.

The Deliverer Reigns Righteously. It was described that Messiah shall be anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the work of God (Isaiah 11: 1-5). The prophesies show the roles Holy Spirit would play in the Messiah. These can be described as a couple of roles: anointing for wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and might, and the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of God. The knowledge is about knowing the nature and character of God. Fear of God refers to reference of Him. Our Deliverer will give wise and divine counsel to those he governs. Godly wisdom and understanding refer to intellectual ability to know and discern between two or more things. We should seek for Holy Spirit anointing for success in life and in the ministry.

It was also prophesied that God would restore the creation and will make the Messiah to be ruler of the renewed earth (Isaiah 11:6-9). God will redeem the creation and restore it to its original design for the messianic millennium rule. During the time there won't be any danger or threats to lives in whatever form. The renewed earth will be filled with the knowledge of God (Numbers 14:21; Habakkuk 2:14) and everyone will know the Lord personally. In preparation for the coming kingdom we must know God personally and live a lifestyle that pleases Him. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 7:14-16; 8:14-15; 9:2-7; 11:1-9; Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 20:17-18.

Our Awesome Hope in God

God keeps covenant as promised. He has performed many things as spoken by His prophets while He will do others at His appointed time. Our hope in God can not fail because His word is truth. He has done what he has said and He will do what He says. Our hope is based on who God is and what He has done. Isaiah 26:4 - Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. We have these for discussion: Rehearse God's Deeds; Praise God for Salvation, and Trust in God's Strength.

Rehearse God's Awesome Deeds: God should be exalted and magnified for what He has done (Isaiah 25:1). He is God and nothing can change His position, therefore we must give Him our worship and study His word with understanding. He will strengthen us and keep our hope alive in Him because He is faithful and truthful to His word and promise.

God will protect and bestow His blessings upon those who believe in Him. Those who want to experience God's presence and receive His blessings must not be occupied with value system that is opposed to His word. Isaiah spoke concerning a nation that rose against and mobilised army against the people of God but which couldn't stand when God rose to save His people (Isaiah 25:2-5). God will strengthen and provide for needs of those who believe in Him while those who are proud and think they don't need Him will be terrified by His work.

God will weaken the strong and deliver the weak from oppression. When the wicked world rages against the Church God will rise and silence uproar of the enemy. Even if they make a terrible noise and raise dust of violence God will silence and bring them low. When the enemies threaten people of God should find strength in God and believe that their persecution will one day come to an end. Christians should hold onto Christ word and do away with fear (Matthew 10:28).

Praise God for Salvation: Isaiah was given the revelation of God's blessings for those who are redeemed and saved - people that will reign with Christ in the millennial kingdom. The saints will be raised from death and their tears wiped away (Isaiah 25:6-9), death will no longer have victory over them (1 Corinthians 15:54). During the millennial kingdom there shall be no pain, sorrow and difficulty associated with the present life. God's promises give us the hope beyond the present times, thus we should focus on eternal glories.

Nations and people that stand as enemies of God's people shall be brought down. God will fulfil the promises concerning His people and give them victory, while the wicked are reserved for the coming judgement (Psalm 1:6; 2Timothy 2:19; 2 Peter 2:9). We may be tempted to condemn people who are suffering under God's judgement, but we should be reminded of Christ's message of salvation and preach repentance. If the Spirit of Christ lives in us we should wish all people well at all times (Luke 9:51-56)

Trust in God's Strength: God confirmed peace His people will enjoy during Christ's millennial kingdom (Isaiah 26:1-2). At that time God will restore the creation to what He wanted it to be originally (Isaiah 26:1-2), and the saints will reign with Christ from the strong city (Jerusalem). All problems and discomfort shall be removed and replaced with perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3-4). As we hope for the promised perfect peace and set eyes on the things above we should settle our minds upon God, trust in Him and live in peace with others. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 25:1 thru 26:4.

Sent on a Mission

Jesus wanted his followers to reach out to the world and preach the gospel. He chose the twelve disciples as the ones that would spread the good news of the new covenant and build the Church. Christians are called to have a part in spreading the gospel. Matthew 10:7 - As ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. We have these for discussion: Instructions for the Mission; Opposition to the Mission, and Encouragement to Fulfil the Mission.

Instructions for the Mission: Jesus sent his disciples out as the apostles that should preach repentance and God's kingdom by his authority (Matthew 10:1-8 ) and gave them the power to perform miracles. He chose the disciples from diverse fields of work and empowered them to do the kingdom's work. This reveals that the Lord uses all types of people to do his work. He equips and empowers those who he calls to do the work. The first mission was to reach out to the 'lost sheep of the house of Israel' and lead them back to God. With Christ's authority the apostles were commissioned to heal the sick, raise the dead and cast out demons.

Jesus charged the disciple not to demand anything from anyone. They were to preach the gospel and save souls with the power of God. The power of deliverance and healing was of God, and not theirs, therefore they were to perform miracles free of charge ( Matthew 10:8; John 9:32-33). They must not use God's free gifts to make themselves wealthy. However, this doesn't mean preachers should not be paid (Luke 10:7; 1 Timothy 5:18) . Those who are ministered to should be responsible for their needs and see doing so as an opportunity to honour God for his daily provisions.

The disciples were told to go in peace and declare peace upon the households and communities that received them. They were to leave places that would bring embarrassment and cause trouble and not to use violence on anyone. They were to declare peace upon the house that would receive them and leave those who reject the gospel (Mathew 10:9-15). God's judgement shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for cities that reject Christ's message. Today, people have greater opportunities to hear God's message but many will just disregard the message. Such people will not have any excuse before God at the judgement.

Opposition to the Mission: Because many are opposed to the message of God, Christ's disciples should expect opposition from various quarters, even from the family. When a society is hostile to the gospel disciples should use godly wisdom and follow the way of peace in dealing with the people (Mathew 10:16-29). Jesus warned the disciples to beware of dangers ahead, and not to be discouraged by various challenges. He assured them of divine intervention at the difficult time.

Preachers of the gospel should not be anxious of what to say while facing opposition, Jesus has encouraged us to trust God and leave the results to Him. There will be Opposition because the kingdom of God clashes with the kingdom of Satan and the kingdom of this world. Those would reject Christ and the message of God's kingdom would also reject believers. In whatever happened believers are not alone, the Holy Spirit will work with them.

Encouraged to Fulfil the Mission: Those proclaiming the gospel should focus on God and see Him in control at the time of persecution (Matthew 10:26-33). Believers are so precious to God that He will not forget about them. They should not fear the world in spite of the opposition, nor should they be ashamed of the gospel.

Threats of death should not prevent believers from proclaiming the message of salvation. Those who endure and overcome will find eternal life (Matthew 10:34-39). Believers are called to obediently follow Jesus while they bear the cross of opposition. He has promised to endow his disciples with the power and authority required for success of the mission. Whatever is sacrificed to follow Christ is worth it. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Matthew 10 1-47

The Lord's 'High' Way
High ways are easy to pass through and give comfort. Just as the way of God is different from the way of man, the highway of God is different from the highway of people. The Lord's highway leads to God's presence where there is lasting peace and comfort, and the requirements to pass through it are holiness, righteousness and the power of Holy Spirit. Isaiah 43:19 - I (the Lord) will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. We have these for discussion: Way of Holiness; Path to victory, and Road to Restoration.

Way of Holiness: The way of holiness brings hope and transforms lives. Isaiah's prophecy of fully transformed life will come to pass when Christ returns to restore all things. That water will spring up in the desert and plants will flourish describes God's promise of restoration for His people (Isaiah 35:1-7). Strengthening of the 'weak hands' and firmness of 'feeble knees' indicate encouragement, power and ability to overcome weaknesses (sin, devil and the world) that prevent people from following God. Miraculous healing and deliverance were performed by Jesus (the Messiah) as prophesied, but complete healing and restoration of the creation will happen when he returns.

Those who have consecrated themselves for Lord's purpose will walk through the way of holiness. The unclean and evil ones will not be found in the way of the Lord (Isaiah 35:8-10). God had sent Jesus to establish the way of His holiness which leads to eternal life. All we need to do to obtain God's salvation is to receive Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, confess our sins , ask for forgiveness, repent and live a transformed life.

Path to Victory: Victorious living is a life of hope and assurance, life well lived in God, the all-powerful, all-knowing and the sovereign God. He reminded people His wondrous work and awesome nature as revealed to His people at the red sea and in the wilderness (Isaiah 43:15-18). God has the power of deliverance and victory. Therefore we should depend on Him to remove pains of the past and for the new thing he has promised to do.

God will do the new thing in our lives as we walk in His way and honour Him (Isaiah 43:19-21). His promised complete transformation of the earth and harmonised living are the prophecies that will come to pass during the millennium reign.

Road to Restoration: The Lord's Highway leads to restoration. At the time of restoration God will bring His people who are scattered at far places back to the holy city and they will not be separated from Him again. Because God kept His promises to Israel in the past, we can be certain He will keep His promises to us. He will strengthen and make us people of His salvation (Isaiah 62:10-12).

We shall not be called 'forsaken' again, but holy people, the redeemed of the Lord as we walk in the way of God, preach the gospel and lead others to Christ. We should pray to God daily, read His word and and seek to be filled with Holy Spirit to keep going through the way of righteousness. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 35:1-10; 43:15-21; 49:7-17; 62: 10-12.

From Darkness to Light.
When the world was in the spiritual darkness and evil became the order of the day God gave His word as the light that would guide people out of darkness and lead them through the right path. The light of God's glory dispels spiritual darkness and leads believers through the way of salvation. Jesus has been given as the Light that reveals spiritual darkness and the One that saves and sets lives free from sin. Isaiah 60:1 - Arise and shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. We have these for discussion: Sin Results in Spiritual Darkness; The Light Dispels Darkness, and Live in the Everlasting Light.

Sin Results in Spiritual Darkness: If iniquity is not a barrier God would have been very close to people, providing all they need without spending much time on prayer. At different times God would warn the Israelites and demand obedience to His word before dealing harshly with them. God makes it known to people that His hand is never too short to save and that He always hears when people pray, but iniquities and lack of repentance have separated people from Him (Isaiah 59:1-2, 8 ). God detests sin because He is Holy and sin is foreign to His nature (1 Peter 1:15&16; James 4:7; John 7:24; 2Corinthians 13:5).

When the Israelites stumbled in spiritual darkness they found themselves in hopeless situation and they began to struggle for deliverance. They couldn't find the way out until they confessed their sins and were ready for repentance (Isaiah 59:9-13). God is just and doesn't want His people to loose sense of justice.

The Light Dispels Darkness: Isaiah prophecy further reveals the events meant for the future concerning Messiah, the Redeemer. The One that would defeat and destroy the enemy and evil in the world and make those who are saved spend the eternity with him. The Redeemer will be filled with the Spirit of God, and God the Father will put His word to his mouth. Through him true believers will receive the word of God (the gospel of the kingdom) which they shall proclaim to the ends of the earth with the power of Holy Spirit (Isaiah 59:19-21).

The Light transforms lives and draws believers to the glory of God. Jesus is referred to as the light that draws gentiles to salvation (Luke 2:23; Acts 13:47; 26:23). Those who accept the gospel will receive the spiritual light and reflect the glory of God in this earth.

Live in the Everlasting Light: The Light brings about restoration. When Israel is finally restored, violence and destruction will be replaced with the walls of Salvation and the gate called praise. God will supply the needs of the people and restore their prosperity. The nation will also experience peace and salvation of God (Isaiah 60:15-18). All these prophecies concerning Israel will be fulfilled when Christ returns to set up his kingdom on earth. The redeemed of the Lord - Jews and Gentiles will be part of the kingdom.

Isaiah's and Revelation's prophesies confirm that Jesus is the Light. Both describe the millennium events that will transform the creation and usher in the new heavens and the new earth (Isaiah 60:19-22). When we receive Jesus as the Light of the world we will find rest to our souls and receive life (John 1:4-9; John 8:12; John 12:35-36; John 1:6-7). His gospel has continued to shine the spiritual light in the world, and those sharing the message will renew their strength in God, receive the joy of salvation and will be made the people of God. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 59: 1 thru 60:22

Our Ultimate Hope
Those who are redeemed by the Lord, walking in the way of righteousness and holiness and obeying God's command will have heaven as their ultimate hope. Isaiah 65:17 - Behold, I (the Lord) create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. We have these for discussion: God's Promised Restoration; Plea for God's Intervention, and What God Will Do.

God's Promised Restoration: Jesus took people through the word God gave His prophet concerning his first coming and the ministry that would usher in the gospel. His first coming marks the time of grace to proclaim God's message of deliverance, healing and hope. It is the time to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord for redemption and salvation (Isaiah 61:1-3; 49:8; 63:4, John 3:17). Christ's message and work on the earth give hope beyond the present world.

God spoke concerning the time He would redeem his people and transform their land. He promised to restore Israel and make the people His priests according to the covenant made with them from the beginning. Even though they have taken to their own ways, failed to serve God the way He wants, and many have hated them God will still call them back to Himself, bless and give them double portion of firstborn inheritance (Isaiah 61:4-9). In the same manner God will bless those who are redeemed to Him through Christ and give them His inheritance. Today, people who are not Jews have received God's new covenant to the world through Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; 1 Corinthians 11:25).

Plea for God's Intervention: It is easier for those who believe and follow the way of God to reflect on divine intervention and trust Him for what He will still do. When Isaiah reflected on wondrous works God did among Israelites he desired that the people should always experience the presence of God and serve Him (Isaiah 64:1-4). Throughout their journey to the promised land Israelites were not only the people that experienced the presence and power of God. The nations around saw how God walked with the people and intervened for them. The signs of the presence of God were not for Israel alone. Since the time of the new covenant God has been God of those who diligently seek and serve Him. Fulfillment of God's promises requires that we wait on God and have confidence in Him.

Just as Isaiah did for Israel, we need to check our lives, examine our sinful conditions, repent of the sins and relate with God with clean heart. Unless God shows mercy and saves life righteousness of man may not find a place before Him (Isaiah 64:5-9). Despite our shortcomings God the Father is still mindful of us as His Children (Deut 32:6; Psalms 68:5; 89:26; 103:13; Prov 3:13). He is the heavenly Father for those redeemed by the blood of His Son.

What God Will Do: He will create new heavens and new earth (Isaiah 65:17-18). Then things of the past will no longer come to the mind. The present Jerusalem will also be transformed for the millennial kingdom. The new Jerusalem ( Revelation 21) of the new creation is different from restored Jerusalem of the millennial reign of Christ (Isaiah 65: 19-25). The millennial reign will be the years of long life and stable peace. During the period also people will enjoy fruits of their labour and they will not labour in vain. Satan will be bound for one thousand years, though he will still be released for a short time before his final judgement. God will be so close to people in the millennium and provide their needs readily. God has revealed what He wants to do with the creation. He doesn't make a promise He is not committed to keep. To Him be the glory. Lesson texts: Isaiah 61: 1-9; 64: 1-9; 65:17-25

Principles of Fellowship
God desires that our fellowship with Him impacts lives of others positively. As we impact lives we should guard against negative influences that can destroy our relationship with God. Love is the greatest ingredient for a healthy relationship with others. Jesus emphasized the command to love God with all one's heart, soul, mind and strength; and that a person should love others as he loves himself. 1 John 1:7 - If we walk in the light, as he is the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his son clesanseth us from all sin. These we have for discussion: Fellowship With God and Others; Conditions for fellowship, and Show Hospitality.

Fellowship With God and Others: We can come into a right fellowship with God through Jesus who filled the separation between us and God and brought us closer to Him. As described, Jesus is the 'Word' of God which was made flesh, and dwelt among us (1 1 John 1:1-4). He gave the gospel as the requirement to walk with God, hear from Him, feel His presence, and to witness his resurrection power. Interaction with the Saviour brings about real, personal and life-changing experience. Those whose lives are touched and changed by Christ don't remain the same again. They are made new people and their lives filled with joy (John 15:11; 16:22-24; 17:13. Daily fellowship with Jesus makes believers become more like him.

Christians should live the truth of the gospel. The truth transforms lives and draws believers closer to God (1John 1:1-6). It can not be possible to live a life that is totally free from moral and spiritual darkness if Jesus is not involved. Jesus leads believers through the way of righteousness and makes it convenient to please God. He reveals the truth about God and directs believer's steps through the path of salvation to earn eternal life.

Conditions of Fellowship: It is required that we should walk in the light in order to come into right relationship with God (1 John 1:7-10). Our relationships with God cannot be perfect if we fail to open our hearts to one another and show love. We should also be united to solve problems and serve God. We should also recognize our flaws, confess and repent of our sins, and ask for the grace to come into a right relationship with God.

Sin prevents the grace to walk with God and feel His presence. It brings guilt, punishment, death and separation from God. But Jesus sets lives free from sin and makes it possible for a sinner to receive forgiveness and God's saving grace. God's grace is not a licence to sin. It brings us to the presence of God and helps us understand what He wants for our lives to enjoy good and unhindered relationship with Him (1 John 2:1-2).

Show Hospitality: Christians are encouraged to follow good example of those who invested their time, energy and resources in others. Gaius was mentioned as a generous, loving and hospitable elder of the church. His efforts made it easier for the Church to work together for the truth, and to fulfil the Great Commission (3 John 5-8 ). For success of the work we should pull resources together, combine gifts and talents, and share experiences.

We should not follow members who are spreading falsehood about the Church. Such individuals won't care if they pollute minds of believers with lies and cause them to work against the truth of gospel. Their falsehood is borne out of pride, arrogance and sin. It is also meant to seek power, prestige and personal gain. While Gaius is described as a good man Diotrephes is described as a bad example that should not be followed (3 John 9-11). As Christians we must love and lead others to God through our relationship with Christ. The more we do this the more our lives become satisfied and fulfilled. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: 1John 1:1 through 2:2; 3 John 1:1-14.
Re: Sunday School Lessons: What Do You Gain To Share With Others? by Rexyl(m): 5:48pm On Sep 06, 2015
Principles of Knowing God
Our understanding of God goes beyond knowing Him as the Creator to knowing His person, His will, His command and His purpose. He gave His commands and demanded our obedience. Our Obedience will bring about a genuine relationship with God. 1 John 2:3 - Hereby we know that we know Him (God), if we keep His commandments. We have the followings for discussion: Obey God's Commandments; Love God, Not the World, and Continue in Christ.

Obey God's Commandments: When we live in obedience to His commands we shall be able to draw closer to Him for a life-changing experience. A genuine relationship with God alters behaviours and changes lifestyle. God demands that people should relate with Him with hearts of love and obedience. It's by doing this that believers can reject sinful lifestyles and overcome deception of devil (1 John 2:3-6).

Christian should live by the word of God. Jesus renewed the covenant and made provision for right right relationship with God. He broke the barrier that had prevented people from having direct access to the presence of God. The barrier is simply identified as sin or darkness. With the appearance of Jesus darkness was dispersed and the evil hidden in it revealed. Jesus is the Light that dispels darkness of sin and makes sin unattractive for those who are truly serving God (1 John 2: 7-14). John encouraged believers to understand and live by the word of God because it would help overcome worldliness.

Love God, Not the World: Christians are to love God and do away with sinful practices. The command to not love the world is to reject immoral behaviour, selfishness and all rebellious acts against God (1John 2:15-17). We must focus on Christ and follow his teachings in order to overcome the world and live as citizens of heaven. Those who love the world prefer worldly values to teachings of the scripture. God wants people to love Him more than the world and walk through His way of life.

Those who know God will have His word well rooted in their hearts. A person will be easily deceived and trapped by false teaching if he doesn't have proper understanding of the word of God. There are people who pretend as preachers of the word but they hold onto false teachings and their aim is to deceive and divert attention of believers from God. Such preachers can profess faith in Christ but their focus is love of the world and its pleasure (1John 2:18-19). They might have even risen from within the Church, but they are enemies of Christ. They want to bring confusion into the Church and mislead believers. False preachers or teachers (those twisting God's word) are 'antichrists'. They are not the same as the 'Antichrist', the demonic leader who will rise up during the 'Great Tribulation'.

Continue in Christ: For believers to continue in Christ they must guard against deception. John called believers' attention to heresy in the church. Heresy is destructive to message of the gospel. The message is a lie and those sharing it are deceivers. Christians need the power of Holy Spirit to enable them discern and disregard such message (1 John 2:20-27). John admonished believers to hold unto the truth they have learned from the beginning. False teachers alters scriptural truth to provide for selfish purposes. Believers should compare any message to the scripture and depend on Holy Spirit to know the truth and abide by it.

John further encouraged believers to stand strong in truth and maintain close relationship with Christ as they anticipate his second coming (1John 2:28-29). The hope and confidence of reigning with Christ are built upon obedience to God's commands and living by truth of His word. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: 1 John 2:1-9.

Living as children of God
We have reasons to appreciate God for making us His children. We were once lost in the world because we lived in moral and spiritual darkness and didn't know God. Christian should know and understand what it means to live as children of God. As the children of God our lives must reflect resemblance our Heavenly Father in terms of being godly, truthful, loving and caring for others. 1 John 3:18 - My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. These we have for discussion: God's Children Identified; God's Children Characterised by Holiness, and God's Children Characterised by Love.

God's Children Identified: Children of God should be known for showing divine love to others. With this kind of love believers will like to seek for the lost and give hope to the hopeless. God doesn't want eternal destruction for anyone that is why He provided the means of redemption of souls from this lost world. God transformed our lives and made us His children because He loves us (1 John 3:1-3). Therefore we should share Christ-like love with others. Children of God become more like Christ in all good manners while the world and its lust become unattractive and unacceptable to them. When we walk as Christ walked we will adopt spiritual discipline that purifies the heart and prevents sin. Those who want to live as Children of God must seek to be like Christ.

Living as Children of God discourages acts of rebellion against God. Such sinful acts violate God's commands and cause departure from His way of righteousness. Sinful deeds cannot be repackaged to minimise sin and make it less serious. When the life is completely transformed believer will understand sin and overcome it with the power and righteousness of God (1 John 3:4-6). We must reject sin and seek to remain pure. Lives are cleansed from sin through Christ and believers are enabled to live worthy of the kingdom of God. A lifestyle that shuns sin and pursues Jesus is required to escape the coming judgement and receive salvation.

God's Children Characterised by Holiness: In the presence of God there is no way to cover or justify unrighteousness. Likewise holiness cannot be redefined to accommodate sinful actions and choices, and there is nothing we can do to modify God's standard of holiness and righteousness. As Children of God our lives must reflect inward and outward signs of righteousness that we belong to Christ, and not the devil (1(John 3:7-8 ).

Those who are born of God are not expected to continue in sin. Christians who align themselves with Christ are truly born of God. There will be a change from sinful nature to godly nature the moment a person becomes child of God (1 John 3:9-10). Sinful nature which belongs the devil will always struggle to overcome and destroy the righteous nature, but by the power of Holy Spirit and presence of Christ children of God will overcome.

God's Children Characterised by Love: Children of God must be distinguished from children of the devil. They must reflect the wonderful love of God. They must endure suffering and persecution on behave of others. They must love all people and help them know God, love Him and do His will. Children of God must not hate anyone. Those who hate others are referred to as murderers because they will not wish them well (1 John 3:11-15; Matthew 5:21-22). Also, they complicate issues in the society and add to problems people are facing. Children of God are called to demonstrate godly love through selflessness, humility, sacrifice, compassion and forgiveness.

God wants us to do as He did when He gave His Son as sacrificial offering for renewal of the fallen relationship with the people. He wants us to love as He loves us, therefore we must have compassion and do all we could to meet needs of others. We are also called to show true love in action. When we do all these we will have the confidence of living as children children of God and rest assured of eternity in this fallen world. To God be the glory. Lesson texts: 1 John 3:1-18.
