The sound of familiar music can be a trigger for flashbacks of events that happened in the past or for bringing up the memory of someone you know/knew. It calls back memories of a particular person or place, and you might all of a sudden see that person’s face or the scene of a flashback in your mind’s eye.

Which music bring up such memories and what memories do they bring up?

For me there are a number of them.
Praiz's song-'rich and famous' reminds me of my present best friend, most of Yvonne Chaka Chaka's songs remind me of the children I grew up with, tuface's 'e be like say' reminds me of the very first Nigerian elections I took interest in and actively followed to the end.
And so on and so forth.

One of my earliest and most cherished musical memories is the song What is a Youth by Nino Rota, from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet (1968).

I'd get back from school each afternoon, slot the cassette in the VCR and move it to the part where the song is sung. In the evenings too, when the parents were out, i'd do the same thing.

I was in primary school at the time. Shakespeare didn't mean a thing to me - indeed i had only a loose idea of the movie's plot - but I was always drawn to that part where the folks in Capulet's ball would gather around the troubador and he'd sing that heart-rending song in what was to me the most melodious voice in the world.


Now that I think of it, it's quite strange. I'd listen intently each time, never mind that I couldn't grasp a word of the lyrics. That didn't deter me at all though, I sang the song in fluent gibberish.

All this was many years ago.

Two years ago I was surfing the net when the tune popped in my head and i was seized by a haunting bout of nostalgia. I ran a quick google search and - believe it or not - it led me to a Wikipedia article on the song. It even had the song itself in mp3! I grabbed the song off Wikipedia for starters.

Now that i'd discovered the song title and lyrics the next step was pretty easy; I got the Capulet's ball scene from Youtube. Now I listen to it one time each weekday, except on public holidays when i listen to it twice. Ha ha

There is this song from one of Stanley Kubrick's movies 'T'aint what you do', it is a very old song and it was sung by Ella Fitzgerald. That one brings memories of my earlier years in the University

ALL Eric Donaldson's tracks are a delight, anytime, anyday...They remind me of my pry school days, life was pure fun then.

mine is Bob Marley's Forever loving Jah, that song takes me back to the times i shared with my dad in the 80's in lagos, he loves bob marley and he made me love marley too.

Ginger williams' "strange world" brings back many memories from the 90's. Stumbled on it then when browsing my dad's old-schools records store,and i couldn't hate it even though its from the oldies then.
Downloaded the song lately and cant stop reminiscing and creating a vivid picture of how fun things were then as a kid when listening to it now.
