M.sc In Biochemistry Or B.sc In Nursing, Which Should I Choose? by Santi222(m): 8:32am On Mar 22, 2013
Dear friends, though its true that google can give you a lot of answers, but one cant compare this with answers containing real life scenarios from personal experience, and thats why we'll always ask for advice here. I am a Biochemistry graduate from a Nigerian university and just finished serving. I had always wanted to become a medical doctor but JAMB, catchment areas, etc destroyed that dream. I ended up studying Biochemistry and loving it. I would love to go into Molecular Biology and specialise in Genetic Engineering or Biotechnology, which are all courses of the future in Nigeria. And also go into The Academic world. Going into the job market after NYSC, i've discovered that Nigeria is a consumer driven economy, science courses dont sell well here, only professional courses and management and administrative courses do. I've decided to go for B.Sc Nursing abroad having learnt that with a degree in Basic medical sciences, you'll finish in 2 years. I feel Nursing will sell more than Biochemistry, here and outside Nigeria. And I could also go into lecturing even as a practicing and registered nurse, if I so desire. I know that I'm in charge of my own destiny, but information is power. So dear friends, advice me. Am I making the right move? Nurses in the house, what chances does a male nurse have in Nigeria? Is there anything I need to know? Matured advice and comments would be much appreciated, please.

My brother, run away from science courses.. Graduate scientists are the most frustrated unemployed graduates in Nigeria..

Medical sciences, Pure & applied sciences doesn't sell here except (like you said), professional courses e.g Medicine Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science/Technology, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Science Laboratory, Optometry...

Most science students lack the orientation until they get to 300L in the uni/poly.. Majority are carried away with scientific grammar & jargons.
Few ended up as Lecturers, most as school teachers (competing with their collegues in the field of Education), while a few with luck & connection ended up as civil servants.

There is nothing to start-up/establish as a scientist in Nigeria! What kind of company can one start with the knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Botany, Biological science, Physics, Microbiology, Biotechnology

If I were you, I'd divert immediately to the field of management science, Engineering, I.T, or social science..

But since you're passionate about Medicine, why don't you pursue with a driving force...(Say Medicine or Nothing).. Nursing sells, but can you cope in the field of nursing? Can you take the pressure from your doc? (knowing fully well that you ought to be on his seat if not for JAMB)

Why don't you consider Dentistry, Optometry (O.D)?
You'll also receive the same title, "Doctor" and most likely the same pay with a human doctor especially when you're a Dentist.

Goodluck sir...

Thanks very much Sir Acidosis. I appreciate your heartfelt advice and ur comments are straight to the point. I'll go into the Professional Medical line. Engineering isnt in my blood or IT either. Optometry or Nursing it will be. I want to know an estimate of the time I'l have to spend again in school. And I'm interested in India. Anyone know anything about schooling there?

Bro, nursing is satisfying if you go into it with passion not prospects. Can you take shiit from other team members.
Anyway men has a way of handling their shiit. If you can take care of a sick person other than your relatives. Assisting or even begging them to eat, bath, poo....just monitoring other peoples health and taking care of their needs, being there for them because you care then go ahead. If not run. There are prospects for male nurses in the fields of peri-operative nursing, anesthesia, psychiatric nursing and occupational health nursing, now men are going into midwifery also.
With your degree, it is four years in Nigeria.

Being a male nurse I would advice, if you can go back and study Medicine better for You, more job satisfaction and respect
But if you can take annoying shit like joanne said You're welcome to the profession, the best place for male nurses is with oil companies that's where there's real job satisfaction.
Also its better if You do it abroad both studying and work that way You will be more fulfilled.

ahh.. Thats cool. I've finally met a male nurse. Buddy, its either Medicine or Nursing, but only one thing bothers me with studying Medicine, even outside Nigeria, looks like its going to take 3 years or more, even with my degree in Biochem. Is there any possibility it mite take less time? And medicine being a demanding course, what are the possibilities of working at the same time? Finally, if I venture into Nursing (i'm a rather patient person, though i dont take much poo) what can u tell me about specialities in Nursing? I mean like Psychiatric nursing and d rest? And are ur renumerations satisfactory?
