An analyst says China recognizes that the US is using North Korea’s belligerence to build up its military presence as a direct nuclear threat against China. In the background of this there has been frightening escalation of rhetoric and threats from both North Korea and the US in the Korean peninsula. The US military build up in the area includes a chemical weapons battalion sent to South Korea and B-2 nuclear capable bombers as well as F-22 stealth fighter jets that have participated in drills in the area. North Korea has reacted to this provocation saying a nuclear war with the United States could start at any time. The US is also undertaking military drills with the Philippines and Japan has openly condemned North Korea’s threats without saying anything about the provocative escalation of US actions. Press TV has interviewed Mike Billington, Executive Intelligence review, Leesburg about this issue. The following is an approximate transcription of the interview. Press TV: Are we closer to a war between the United States and North Korea or are we just closer to a Korean war? Billington: No I don’t think we’re particularly close to a Korean war. There could be a spark there, but as I’ve said many times and as Lyndon La Rouche has said many times, we are extremely close to a global nuclear war between the United States and Russia and China. "The problem in Korea, is as the Chinese recognize, is that the US has taken advantage of these provocations on both sides - and there certainly are North Korean provocations, but there are also numerous US provocations - They’ve taken advantage of this for a significant military build up in the region, which the Chinese recognize is a ring around China." It’s of course been going on since the so-called pivot began, but this has brought new ABM systems, ex-band radars and other heavy offensive weaponry into play. It’s interesting that Morton Halperin, a former defense and security official in several administrations, yesterday said at a forum in Washington that although the US has officially at least pledged to the Russians that there would not be a first strike nuclear attack against Russia’s nuclear capacities - of course because Russia has a huge nuclear capacity - So the mutually assured destruction works. But thus far, according to Morton Halperin, the US has never made that pledge to the Chinese - that we have not in fact informed them that we would not launch an attack against their relatively small nuclear capacity and therefore the Chinese have very, very good reason to be concerned over this use of North Korea to build up the US military forces there. Press TV: So then, are we entering an era of a cold war in a sense between China and the US in the region? Billington: I don’t think it’s that cold. The confrontation with Russia is actually far more serious because the US and the British are insisting that Russia and China back down from their absolute refusal to accept the regime change policy in the Middle East, which has now been going on from Iraq and Libya to Syria and very likely to Iran in the near term. As far as Korea itself goes, this would be an excellent time to open talks with North Korea. The North is open to talks. What they want is a better relationship with the United States; to do away with the armistice, which ended the Korean war with no peace i.e. no official peace treaty. But they want a peace treaty, but it has to be on equal terms and therefore they make these kinds of belligerent statements and they’ve developed their nuclear weapons - very small scale and incapable of attacking the United States despite their statements. "Every body knows that they’re incapable of launching such an attack and it would be insane and suicidal. But they do want talks and they will not talk on the current proposal from the US and the British, which says we’ll only talk if you agree to give up your weapons first. They see what happened to Libya; they see what happened to Iraq, they’re not going to do it." But it is an excellent time... And many in South Korea by the way agree, including potentially the new president Park Geun Hye who wants to have a basis of trust between North and South Korea. |

Their problem is that the rise of China will eclipse US economic dominance, something that would lead to a catastrophic drop in US living standards. The reason the US is so 'mighty' today is that other nations trade in the dollar. Commodities like oil and gas are traded in dollars. This keeps the dollar in great demand and its value artificially high, whereas it should be very low since the US is producing so little, at uncompetitive prices. As China's economy expands and stabilizes at world number 1, other nations will eventually adopt the Chinese currency as the global trading instrument of choice. So an attack on China - a nuclear attack on China - is seen by the Americans as the only way to avert the impending 'disaster'. 2 Likes |

I don't believe the US would want to target China. The repercaussion for that in the face of globalization would be so drastic the US economy, security and social status would suffer all at once. And even if they hit China using a disguise of some sort, they would still be subjected to all what I stressed above, because there are few countries with nuclear weapons. Someone correct me if am wrong. I like International Politics. |

bookface: what point are you trying to make here? China has every right to develop a military defence system and if that means developing nuclear capability to defend its sovereignty - so be it. the united states is the only nation that has used nuclear weapons against its enemy - they are therefore the loose canons in this whole situation. |

cap28: You clearly haven't read my piece or you may have had trouble understanding it. Where in it did i state that the Chinese do not have a right to develop a nuclear capability? My point is just a reflection of my frustrations with people who couldn't be bothered to reason their arguments through before attemtping to force their unreasonable logic down the throat of the rest of the world. Someone says "US to wage Nuke War on China, Russia" another one supports this line of reasoning based on the fact that "US is concerned about Chinese growth and the only way to stop it is to nuke the Chinese" ... Jesus wept! are people such dumb-asses? If China knows that US has any slight chance of waging a Nuclear war against it in the near future, anyone with half a brain will think Chinese policy makers would be stockpiling on their nuclear arsenal - which they are not, or spending a lot on development of second strike capability - which they are not. China at the moment, seem to be concerned about Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, if you think someone will nuke you in the near future, you should be doing something else. People talk about nuclear wars like it is something out of some hollywood fiction. Thank goodness the guys in charge of these nukes don't think like dumbasses. There are several ways to sabotage another country's economy, dropping nukes on them isn't one. What a childish senseless silly thought. |

In 2001 the US had approx 12.000 warheads, and Russia had approx 13,000 warheads. But in 2003, the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was signed calling for both the US and Russia, to bring the number of Nuclear warheads down to 2,200 each by 2012. The US reached the goal of 2,200 in 2007, Russia reached the 2,200 mark last year 2012. Now this is, of course, what is told to use by the governments, though in reality they probably still have thousands more in which are not on the books. |

Why do something so stupid as this? If they nuke China now, who won't point fingers at them? Besides, as u said, nuclear weapons are very sophisticated weapons of mass destruction, (whose impact is unimaginable), and can't/shouldn't be used unless the world has ran out of oppositions when fighting THE major war. No body in his right mind will ever initiate a WMD for such petty reasons as the topic being discussed. Even though economic dominance could be a tempting reason to destroy competition, using WMDs can never be in the proposed plan. Thats how I feel. |

US is working closely with china, Korea and Russia. Russia is deceiving north korea, they wont protect them. If this people fight. It would actually be gud for mankind. Because they are all demons.
