The truth is that the leadership of MEND never accepted Amnesty from the beginning. They were the only militant group that rejected amnesty. They appear to be the only group that are fighting for the course of the Niger Delta people. Those that accepted amnesty were fighting for their stomach. The Amnesty programme was the tool the government used to continue to cheat the people of Niger Delta. As for the BOKO HARAN, amnesty is out of the question. The Northern Elders are interested in amnesty to protect their business interest. Kano is the commercial nerve center of the North. The BOKO HARAN activities will indirectly affect the commercial activities. Why didn't they come up with the amnesty idea before now.

I suggest the Federal govt should agree to the deal at least to give them the opportunity to know them better. Then along the line of negotiation, give them conditions they will not be able to accept. If they do not reach any agreement, the group is at least partially exposed. What do you think?

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, on Friday night made real its threat of resuming hostilities by killing 13 policemen in reaction to the sentencing of its leader, Henry Okah by a South African Court.

Okah was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment by a South African court over the October 1, 2010 bombing.

Although, it was still unclear the major reason behind the brutality in Bayelsa, it was gathered that heavily armed militants killed the twelve policemen along the waterways of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

Sources put the death toll at 13 while others said 12.

The policemen drawn from the security pool of the Bayelsa State Government House and the state Police Command were on a special duty to Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw local government area where an aide to the state Governor, Mr Kile Selky Torughedi, was burying his mother, when they were ambushed.

Torughedi was recently appointed a Senior Special Adviser to Governor Henry Seriake Dickson on Marine Waterways Security, as part of the State government’s efforts to curb the spate of pirate attacks in the riverine area of the state.

It was learnt that 15 policemen were in the boat providing escort to dignitaries attending the burial when their boat suddenly developed a fault and while they were trying to fix it, a speedboat conveying some armed men opened fire at them killing 13 of them on the spot while the other two jumped into the river.

Are you sure it was MEND? Have they stated categorically that they were the ones? According to Punch newspaper, it was some aggrieved ex-militants that belonged to the host's(The Young Shall Grow) group that carried out the attack. They carried it out because they felt cheated by their boss,the former warlord who is now a Special adviser to the Bayelsa state govt.So how MEND entered this equation, i cannot fully comprehend!!

May be from your own point of view, amnesty should be given to those who killed over 3000 innocent Nigerians and who so ever that doesn't agree with that should commit suicide. Another amnesty should be given to those who killed those police officers.

please explain why an innocent policemen who may even be from Niger Delta origin should be killed to protest amnesty given to criminals anywhere, lets be sensitive to human lives, these policemen are human beings on duty for God's shake.

You are a fool to think MEND or other militant groups in the ND fight on our behalf, and not their own pockets. If so, list A SINGLE POSITIVE project these criminals have implemented for a single community of the Niger-Delta. After all, these criminals have stolen millions via illegal oil bunkering ops. And why don't you tell the families of scores of innocent civilians, law enforcement agents, and military officers killed by MEND, and see if you won't get lynched? Let them continue with their activities, and we'll see if they can face the military might of the FG. Payback's just moments away.
