Governor Rotimi Amaechi
By Femi Makinde And Olalekan Adetayo

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has ruled out the possibilityof having a violent revolution in the country.

Amaechi spoke in Ekiti State on Saturday at the second Nigeria Symposium for Young and Emerging Leaders.

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, Prof. Pat Utomi, Chief Executive Officer of Sahara Group, Mr. Tonye Cole, and representative of Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, among others, attended the symposium, organised by The Future Project.

Amaechi said many Nigerians had become used to suffering rather than pushing for a change.

According to him, Nigeria has experienced worse situations than what led to revolution in some other countries.

Amaechi said he was sure that those who gathered to protest against the removal of oil subsidy in January 2012 would flee immediately the President drafted soldiers to the Freedom Park in Lagos and other states to quell the uprising.

He said, “Yes, revolution can happen outside Nigeria. But here, I do not think so. Tell me what happened in Sudan, Libya, Zimbabwe and other countries that have not happened here. Our elasticity has no limit. You do not pray for electricity to be regular but you know that some Nigerians pray ‘God, let the light be stable today.’

We pray without working to solve our problems and we think God will do what we are supposed to do for us.”
Noting that courage was required to make any change, he said those who were truly seeking a change would never be afraid of guns.

The governor, however, said he was not in support of the call for the disintegration of the country, saying there were many advantages in being together.

Meanwhile, Presidency on Sunday faulted the claim by Amaechi that Nigeria was gradually sliding back to the era of dictatorship.

Before reading his speech where he was honoured with the Vanguard Personality of the Year Award in Lagos on Saturday, Amaechi was said to have explained that he decided to read a prepared speech, because “I am becoming more careful, given that we are gradually going back to the era of dictatorship in this country”.

But in an interview with one of our correspondents, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said the governor could not have been referring to the President.

Gulak said so far, the President had been ruling the country by adhering strictly to the nation’s constitution.
He said Jonathan, in the spirit of democracy, has also been consulting widely before he takes any decision and so could not be said to be a dictator.

The presidential aide said since Amaechi was one of those ruling the country by virtue of being a governor, he might be admitting by his statement that he was ruling his state like a dictator.

He said, “As a governor, Amaechi is one of those ruling this country. Is he admitting that he is a dictator in his state?

“We are in a democratic administration. We are ruling by the constitution. The President is committed to the rule of law. I am not sure the governor is referring to the President.”

Rotimi,STOP SPEAKING FROM YOUR ANA.L HOLE
You right noted Nigeria is sliding into dictatorship over the weekend but failed to include your behaviours along with your other governors as causative factors not just Ebele's 2015 election ambitions
Talking about sacrifices, did that reflect when you awarded yourself a generous self approved monthly pension
In what way are you different from those who eat 'ordinary' cassava bread but spend billion$ on feeding
Hypocrite!,remove the log in your eye first before accusing us of cowardice for it is your kind who approved the increase of fuel from 65 to 97 naira
Are you still running your 2 naira fuel subsidy scam in Rivers?
It is your kind who unleash bullets on citizens protesting for their rights e.g.Dickson who arrested unemployed graduates for 'roumour mongering' yet pays militants to keep a phyrric peace.
Hypocrite!

Amaechi needs to park well.. angry

I want to rebel against him and the way he handles Rivers State, but I know that the day I jump up, is the day that his over 300 Police escorts would use me for target practice..

"When we want to demolish, the Airforce will deploy helicopters, the navy will move to the areas with gunboats, while the army will have its officers and men on the land, to ensure the demolition is effected and to prevent resistance" - Rotimi Amaechi (Leadership newspaper of Monday June 11, 2012)

Look at who is talking about timidity, why not try send your demolition squad to any of the waterfront communities scattered across Port Hacourt, without the security apparatchiks mentioned above to get an idea of what peoples's resistance or revolution will be like

Let me use this opportunity to plead with Amaechi to talk to the PHCN officials incharge of Rumuola around college of Art and Science to please give us light the way others have light. We don't enjoy 1hour light in two days. The worst area in light the whole world. I'm so fed up and is so frustrating. On the issue of evolution, amaechi in what area are you better of to be advising Nigerians. Rivers state is just PH for mouth nothing to show in your six years rule. r

..blacks are cowards especially nigerians...
Those people shouting here that nigerians are not timid, ask them where they run to during subsidy protest that coulda lead to revolution... They will all tell u, nigeria dnt what dying for. They just go back home, eat full bowl of eba, and pray for changes..

the only time u'll see black man in action is when they insult his religion.. He is ready to die to safeguard the dirty religion that was given to him by his white, arab masters

Amaechi might not be the right person to say it but i believe we Nigerians are actually timid.
We prefer to occupy our minds with trivial issues(like the recent wedding in Dubai).
Our politicians are aware of this, that's exactly why they take us for granted...it's so sad.

And you think Amaechi will start a revolution? You must be dreaming. He is only saying this because himself and Jonathan have fallen apart. The revolution is for you and I to start not for Amaechi and his cohorts.

But as much as I hate our leaders, he has a point. First of all, as we can see from Nairaland, we are not united. So a poverty striken Ijaw man will hardly revolt against Jonathan even though his life has become worse under Jonathan. He has been used to suffering all his life and now he can claim his "brother" is president. The truth is that there is nothing like a Nigerian. Nigeria is just a geographical expression! So our leaders can always claim tribalism when they are being criticised and his people will support him!

Second we are inherently greedy. Even if there is going to be a revolution, the leaders of the revolution can easily be bribed just like labour was bribed. The average Nigerian thinks only of himself and no one else. When we begin to think about the common good, then we can talk about revolution.

Going back to my earlier point that there is noting like a Nigerian. Is Nigeria worth dying for. Until we all reach a stage where we believe there is something worh dying for, there will never be a revolution. We are a long way from that now.

Look who is talking, Nigerians can never carryout revolution, not because we are timid, but its God doing, in my church we pray everyday for Nigeria in distress, you thing God does answer prayer? Nigerians i will say are the most religious people in world, hence God is closer to Nigeria, Nigeria of today isnt the Nigeria of 2012, we are moving forward, we will definitely get there. My prayer isnt revolution anymore, because i have got hope for a better Nigeria.

One way or the other he's right because during d subsidy protest instead of people to really protest they rather turn it to carnival which is sad for d national development

Re: Nigerians Too Timid For Revolution – Gov. Amaechi by Cyberknight: 11:01am On Apr 08, 2013
Revolution, revolution, revolution. Easy to throw around words, but when it comes to doing, what next? In my opinion, Nigeria is not yet ripe for revolution. The Russians were in 1917, the Cubans were in 1958, the French were in 1793,but as of 2013 the Nigerians are not yet ready to revolt. When they are, we will all know. And even though I am a Nigerian, not expatriated, but living here in this our dear, beloved, brutalized and abused land and suffering the consequences thereof (no light, no good amenities, vanishing hope for our children), I must say I don't really want a revolution. As much as the emotions cry that that is the best solution, my reason says otherwise: in Africa things like this never end neatly, if Nigerians take up arms now, our grandchildren will still be fighting in 50 years time. Naija shall probably turn to Angola, Sudan, Mozambique or any other of the numerous African countries with long lasting conflicts. Better to continue like this than to end up like the Palestinians, generations of refugees in tents in their own land. Just my opinion. The black man always takes things too far. So, to revolt or not to revolt?
Re: Nigerians Too Timid For Revolution – Gov. Amaechi by chessguru1(m): 11:04am On Apr 08, 2013
Hate amechi all you like, but the truth is he has a point. Nigerians are not ready 2 sacrifice their lives for anything. Not even for their children or for their childrens future.
How many parents have a trust fund for their children?
Until we remove our "gimme here and now" mentality, greed and selfishness, there can be no revolution. The political class know this fact very well.

Typical of a nigerian politician whose options are and fortunes are dwindling.

Amaechi wasn't this vocal when things were rosy between him and Jonathan. He certainly wasn't this vocal in his first tenure.

2015 is around the corner and dude is already at the rooftop chattting hokum!

Amaechi and his buds are part of the problems we have in Nigeria.

If dude is serious about revolution, he should step aside and enjoy his loot just like his mentor Odili
