I'll Remember

http://vimeo.com/38706801

Say good-bye to not knowing when
The truth in my whole life began
Say good-bye to not knowing how to cry
You taught me that

And I'll remember the love that you gave me
Now that I'm standing on my own
I'll remember the way that you changed me
I'll remember

Inside I was a child
That could not mend a broken wing
Outside I looked for a way
To teach my heart to sing

I learned to let go of the illusion that we can possess
I learned to let go, I travel in stillness

And I'll remember happiness
I'll remember (I'll remember)
Mmmmm... (I'll remember)
Mmmmm...

No I've never been afraid to cry
Now I finally have a reason why
I'll remember (I'll remember)

He swam leisurely to shore, and drew himself onto the beach, panting a little. He lay down and watched the moonlight dancing on the water. His companions were nowhere to be found, the beachfront was deserted and he was alone with his thoughts.

Right now, he almost wished for some company but he was also comfortable just lying there for a while, thinking.

I'm almost like the thinker, he thought.

The sudden silence compared to the earlier activities on the beach, was quite a contrast.

He could feel himself getting drowsy, and the water lapping gently on the ocean felt and sounded serene.

He thought he heard drumbeats in the distance, but they were so faint he wondered if he was imagining them.

Sometimes By Step

Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to stoop so close
You could touch it but your heart would break

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise you
And I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

It don't matter what you see
I know I could never be
Someone that'll look like you.

Drumbeats

The drumbeats grew louder, they were more perceptible now. The young man was so curious, he quickly sat up and peered into the distance, trying to see what was going on. He saw a great crowd, some miles away, to the left of the coast. They were moving fast, swaying to the drummers' beats. His interest piqued, the young man got up and headed towards the crowd.

He'd been walking for a while when he noticed he did not seem to be getting any closer. He could, however, make out a procession, mostly dressed in blue, who seemed to surround a princely figure who danced with slow, sad, stately steps. Every so often, he would turn and face the crowd, an utter some words, to which the crowds respondsed with a roar. Some boys were performing acrobatic stunts and this contributed to the festive atmosphere.

By the edges of the crowd were a quieter group. This group were escorting an older man who stood, stately and alone, dressed in dazzling tones of a light shiny material. He was observing the festivities and the crowd, and he made occasional commentaries to his aides althuogh they did not seem to be close enough to hear him, but they caught the import of his observations anyway. They discussed these among themselves, and relayed to the horsemen who carefully noted what they said on a piece of paper which looked like baked clay. This was stored carefully in a specially designed bag for that purpose which was mounted on three stands on the horse's back. The older man watched the activity sadly, then turned and headed in a different direction, leaving behind his retinue. They gazed after him and the young man saw more than one of them wipe away a tear, but they quietly rejoined the crowd and slowly, became part of the festivities. The old king kept walking, and the young man was surprised to see a forest in the distance which he had not noticed before. The king was headed in that direction, but in between the festivities and trying to keep pace with the distant crowd, the young man lost sight of him and did not know when he entered the forest.

The crowd was moving at a faster pace now; there was still about a mile between them and the young man. The princely man at the head of the column, had stopped by the coast and it was a while before the crowd calmed down enough to hear him speak. He waved a long stick covered with graceful white feathers, and everyone around him hushed. The young man also paused and waited to see what was next.
The prince seemed to grow taller, the aides brought a long flowing gown which he wore, and a transformation seemed to occur right there. The prince (now king), held a staff which had been retrieved from the water ( the young man could not really say how, perhaps it had been stored there in a vault), and he spoke with authority. The horsemen handed him the paper tablet with the words of the former king, he perused it carefully and handed it back to them for safekeeping. Then he turned to address the crowd.

"Considerable!!!!!" he shouted

The crowd went wild "Substantial!!!!!"

"Powerful!!!!!"

"Distinguished!!!!!"

"Skillful!!!!!" roared the King.

"Great!!!!!" the crowd bellowed in return.

At this point, the drummers rolled in, in full force, and another session of dancing began. The king danced gracefully and the crowd responded in kind, a bit more energetically and with gusto. The king danced, the crowd danced, the young man danced as well, without noticing the crowd had once again resumed it's journey and the king was no longer in his line of sight but at the front of the column, headed somewhere in the distance. He had left behind a little sparkly stone beside the water, it's greenish blue hues glimmered and shone softly in the waves.

The young man decided to set a course for the town he could see far off, and hoped he would get there by evening.

The young man kept walking, humming a tune as he did so. Something flitted past him, but he could not determine what it was. He paused to look for it. Was it a hummingbird? It's speed and lightness seemed to say so.

He saw nothing, and decided to continue walking.

A shape materialized out of the air around him.It was amorphous, but at the same time, seemed more solid than it looked. As he watched, a swirling mist ran in fluid motions through the shape yet stayed within the boundaries of it's appearance. Is this a ghost, he thought.

"What are you?" asked the young man.

"I am a shape" the shape replied.

"I can see that" said the young man. "But who are you?"

"I am what you see" it responded."That is who I will be for now"

The young man wondered about this, but decided not to probe further. He was puzzled, though.

The shape whispered something to other shapes beside it which he had not noticed previously. He now saw he was surrounded by various shapes which all swirled around the road in an interested manner, but did not obstruct his path.

The town was closer now. He could see people walking around, and he wondered what awaited him there.

The shapes kept whispering and when he stopped, so did they. If he resumed walking, they did the same. He did not know if he should be afraid or just ignore them (which was difficult).

He choose the latter course of action and looked determinedly towards the town.

"You should not ignore us" said the shape.

Why not, thought our subject.

"Because we are here due to you" it replied.

It can hear my thoughts? thought the young man.

"Yes" said the shape.

"Ok", said the young man, "This is creepy. I was not afraid before but I wonder if I should be".

"Well,", answered the shape, "You can feel fear if a situation calls for it".

He wondered if this situation called for it and quickened his pace. The shapes did the same. So he slowed down and walked in a leisurely manner in order not to alarm them.

"We are not alarmed" said the shape.

Our hero raised an eyebrow.

"You are almost at your destination" the shape responded. "The form we are in now, will become clearer to you with time. When or if you get back to the forest, tell the old man you saw us. He will know already, but mention this anyway".

The other shapes were engaged in various activities while they walked. As he watched them, they would morph into one thing or the other, all the while maintaining their constant chatting and hustle.

"Will I ever understand any of this", thought the young man.

He headed towards the town.

He was almost there now, and quickened his pace. As he approached, the shapes became less visible and by the time he got there, he could no longer distinguish shape from form, they seemed to merge quickly with the buildings and personas in view. He was aware he'd see them later at some point. he also wondered why they had referred to the old man and if they would be waiting for him in the forest.

Oh well, enough of that, he thought. I have more challenges ahead.

And right on cue, almost as if they'd read his mind, a few people appeared right in front of him. They'd emerged from one of the buildings, or maybe a street.

"Hello" one said.

The young man paused, then decided to engage them in conversation.

"Hello" he replied. "I am trying to get to the other side of this town. In addition, I heard there's a get together somewhere which I would not mind attending".

"No problem" said another. "Just keep going this route (or any route), all the roads here lead to the same destination".

"Which is?" asked the young man.

"Wherever you're going" was the response.

The young man wondered why he kept meeting people who spoke like this. However, he did not want another mind reading, one sided conversation like he'd had with the shapes, so he decided to keep the flow of talk current.

" Thank you" he said. 'Will you be at the party or will I meet all of you again outside this town?"

They said nothing, but seemed amused. After a few minutes while he looked around and waited for a response, they nodded in affirmation.

"Yes" said the leader. "We'll be at the party and maybe in the forest. We do know the old man".

"Good to know" our man replied. "I'll be on my way then".

"Godspeed" they said. "Keep going, but watch your way. Any road you take is fine, but always ask for directions if you get confused".

They waved at him and headed off in the direction he was coming from. This puzzled him a bit since he had assumed they'd be walking together, but he kept going anyway.

The road seemed to get narrower and he looked around for an alternate path as well as any signs indicating a party. He could see some brightly coloured posters fluttering a few miles off, and he assumed that might be the venue of the party.

Other people were headed that way as well, and he wanted to catch up with them, perhaps he would see someone he knew, as well. He thought about the lady and the other people he had encountered on this journey.

The road kept getting narrower and eventually, went up a hill. He climbed it easily, then walked up another.

Exactly how a hill (or hills) were located inside a town, was not something he could figure out presently. So he just kept going and eventually discovered a hill which was joined to the next one by a series of steps stretched across the length of the divide.

It looked easy enough to cross; he did not think it would be too hard. So he kept going and strode on the first one. He took a few steps; all seemed fine, so he took a few more. Then he felt the steps shaking. He slowed his pace and glanced behind him to see if everything was fine.

To his surprise, he noticed a step was missing over where he’d just passed. He had not seen that before.

The steps ahead seemed ok although he wasn’t sure that could not change. He moved cautiously over them and glanced back again. The place he had just stepped over had vanished into thin air. He wondered if he was seeing things but decided not to waste more time trying to figure it out. After all, one or two steps should not be a big deal as long as the way forward was clearer. However, looking forward, he saw one or two steps were missing as well, although this did not make the way inoperable. He just had to walk very carefully and step over the openings, which thankfully, were not too big.

So he trod warily and hoped he would reach plain ground soon enough.

A shape materialized beside him and strangely, he felt relieved even without knowing why it was there or where it had come from.

“I am not here to help you” said the shape. “I am only here to explain a little of what you need to know”

“This particular path is very difficult” replied the young man. “Why are some steps not there?”

“Those steps are ones which would have bolstered the path and hence, strengthened your way, but since they are not there, you have to improvise by yourself in order to reach your goal, which is getting to whichever of your destinations you are headed to right now”.

The young man thought about this, it did not seem to make any sense. Why would steps of unknown etiology vanish and leave a void instead of substance? The shape had also vanished, he noticed.

“Can you help me?” he thought aloud. “The going is very difficult”.

“I am not going to transform into the missing steps” said the shape from the void. “But you know I am here, so at least you're aware you are not alone; this should help you with the difficulty in a small way. I cannot replace what is missing but I can let you know this road is not impassable”.

The young man pressed on and even though he was apprehensive over the situation, he knew he could not stay on the steps forever and enough time was passing already.

Funny enough, when he looked up, he was far closer to the bright placards he had seen earlier, than he had previously thought. So he walked over the next few steps and walked across the last one to the plain.
