Police ignore woman trapped under trailer

A middle-aged woman, Ifeoma Oraka, who was hit by a trailer and got trapped under the vehicle on Friday morning at Second Rainbow Bus Stop, on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, was allegedly ignored by policemen at the scene.

The incident, our correspondent learnt, happened in the front of a police station and in the presence of some policemen.

An eyewitness told Saturday PUNCH that the incident happened around 10 am as the woman stood at the bus stop waiting to board a bus.

The eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Chibuzor, said, "I was on my way to work when I got to the bus stop and saw a lot of people gathered. I learnt that the trailer had a failed break and hit a bus the woman was about to board.

"Many people stood there looking at her under the trailer apparently thinking she was dead because the trailer had crushed her legs. Policemen stood all around too controlling the traffic, which I did not think was the most important think at the time.

"I talked to a taxi driver who agreed to take the woman to the hospital. To ensure that she got prompt attention at the hospital, I approached the policemen to at least follow us to the hospital but they shouted at me to get away."

Chibuzor said even though the woman had to be dragged from under the trailer half-dead, the policemen showed no sympathy.

He said they were only concerned about impounding the two buses that were also involved in the accident.

Our correspondent learnt that the woman was rushed to Gbagada General Hospital, where she was given first aid treatment and later referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for intensive treatment.

But the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ngozi Braide, has maintained that the victim could not have been ignored by policemen.

"I was not there but I can tell you that the report that policemen were around but did nothing to help the woman is a lie. Police can never do that," she said.

Dat woman is a very senseless woman. Police can even do more dan dat, Its surprising how Police superiors defend their junior officers for wrong doings......Hw will d Nigerian Police be beta?

I am tired of Nigeria police, they are wicked than prisoners.
This ngozi braide can't just stop lieing, i bet she would have make a better spokeparson for GEJ.

I feel the nigerian police is our nunber one problem. They've institutionalised corruption, inefficiency, lethargic attitude, incompetence; they are now the enemy of the people. They work only where there is quick cash to be made.

Very worrisome as her arguement stems from assumption rather than from reports obtained. It shows how uncaring our police could be.

am not surprised. I knew that police learnt cruelty and lies as part of their job. I knew if the police spoke woman would reply, she will defend them. liar from the pit of hell. bunch of heartless people.
I am surprised that the ppro didn't say they attacked the police men that was trying to rescue the victim with cutlass and machetes and they have to flee for their safety,that's why they couldn't do anything.

Oga o. What ever happened to bravery and valour of the police. But on a second thought, considering the way they are treated in police academy as evident from the video that went spiral months back, i think it will be foolhardy to expect much from them

Are we suprised? A commissioner of police once told me that, he usually 'roger' the policemen he meets on his way,whenever he is moving without escorts, to avoid stories that touch.
He told me they could kill him for his car and d cash they think he might have on him then or on discovering his identity.

If this news shocked u, then definitely you are not in Nigeria. They've done worse things. I once know a guy who lost his family in a road crash which he was involved in, the first responders to the scene were 'our friendly policemen' who went ahead to rob the occupants of the crashed vehicle of their monies & turned around & left them there to die, which they did die but d boy alone survived.

U need to see how soldiers in less than 20 minutes split a luxurious bus with axe and rescued every passenger alive. But a soldier and the driver of the order vehicle involved in the accident lost their lives as they died instantly.
