Fashola Blames Country’s Woes On Leaders’ Poor Education

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, blamed poor quality education of Nigeria’s leaders for the nation’s woes.

This came as Lagos government dismissed any plan to take over the burnt popular Alade Market, Allen, Ikeja, saying “it would only enumerate and investigate the cause of it with a view to forestalling future occurrence.”

Fashola, who spoke during a visit by the management of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahman Bello, at the state house, Alausa, said: “The disconnection between our educational curricula from our evolving needs is responsible for the poor performance of the country’s economy.

“The performance of the nation’s economy is a function of the quality of education those managing it received.”

Especially in a country where leaders are setting up and wasting tax payers resources on rumor control committee, the president setting up committee after committee over everything, dashing taxpayers money to celebrities, buying luxury jeeps for celebrities, funding private jets, luxury armored vans with public funds and the mess goes on and on.

I disagree. Poor judgement and lack of vision is the root of our endemic poor leadership, not poor education. Nigerian leaders received far better education than the leaders in say, Tanzania or Zambia or Niger. Thos three countries perform far better for their people and their countries.

Any evidence to back your claim up? How do you know Nigerian leaders received better education?

If education has nothing to do with it, then Nigeria is doomed.

I disagree Fashola not in all cases.

The most important attribute of a leader should be to have the interest of your populace at heart

Compare the education of Adams Oshiomole with someone like Emmanuel Uduaghan a Medical Doctor and their achievement in governance over the last 6yrs

Retardeen Jonathan has a PhD for fucckk sake and we can see how he brought extreme cluelessness to governance

I agree with fashola here. Poor education it is.
Our educational institutions as mandated by standards, already places emphasis on Character in addition to Learning but the grads/undergrads themselves aren't aware. If you think i am lying, you go to some uni undergrads, ask them why they are going to school and get the surprise of your life. There is no emphasis on character as a virtue of our educational institutions instead we now have unwritten laws like ''do it but don't get caught''

Poor education is just part of it.
But I ll include lack of foresight, poor management & the callous, heartless corrupt mind exhibited by most leaders in Nigeria. It takes a heartless mind to embezzle money.
Re: Fashola Puts Country’s Woes On Leaders’ Poor Education by Gbawe: 7:19am On Apr 15, 2013
Fashola is right somewhat. The case can be meritoriously argued that the Nigerian education is no longer one geared towards producing solution providers. Leaders can only come from the pool of "educated" Nigerians the Country has at its disposal.

Obviously this will not apply empirically as there will be exception but if one looks at the big picture whereby a country is churning out mediocre thinkers, almost as standard, then it is obvious that the few brilliant and analytical thinkers may not make a difference unless deliberately protected and empowered to do so in the arena of mediocrity Nigerian leadership is - an attendant product of an education system that is not developing those who troubleshoot effectively and deliver solutions inspirationally and innovatively.

So where is the future of Nigeria judging from the poor education of the youths as exemplified on NairaLand alone, talk less of looking at the graduates churned out from the higher institutions yearly. Who can you single out on NL to worth a prospective Nigerian Leader. I cant find.

I disagree with Fash the ca$h on this one
Our independence and post independence leaders had the best of education but positioned the country wrongly
The leaders who came after them watered their rot into decadence and the slide continues unabated with the present crop

Awolowo is strongly convicted by many of been a tribalist but have you read what Azikiwe said of Ibos chosen by God to lead the black race,Ahmadu Bello on conquering the Yorubas and subduing the Ibos or even the supremacist views&acrimony advocated by Achebe in his 'There was a country' book

Greed,Tribalism,Lack of vision,Lack of statesmen,An overbloated ego and sense of self worth,I don't give a phuck about the people,A total disconnect of priorities and realities on ground

All the above form the foundation
On top of this foundation, you can now erect poor education as the causative factor nourished by the above evils

Good intentions? Do we now say Amosun of Ogun is right when he tried to construct a N2.5b air conditioned brigde? Good intention is good but the most important thing is the fairness of the good intention and character/know how to actualize those intentions.

“The disconnection between our educational curricula from our evolving needs is responsible for the poor performance of the country’s economy."

I quite agree with this assertion. Education shouldn't be copy and paste, rather should be tailored towards providing solutions to local problems. Many of us read about capitalism, socialism, communism etc Yet we have not been able to EVOLVE an economic system to cater for our particular needs.

Good leaders need a variety of skills – Vision, honesty, ability to inspire, etc. but all good leaders need good quality education (classroom, work experience, & global). The last two Nigerian leaders may have been lecturers but surely, both were poorly educated. Some of the required skills of a good leader has are directly related to his education.

Nigerian leaders lack all of the above and to compound matters further, they are greedy, corrupt, disconnected, compassionless, & tactless.

What we have currently is a scripted democracy.
to develop our democracy we need to constantly respond or address our situations, but when we have imported democracy, things shall always fall apart.

it is not poor education but a faulty selection process that allows the poorly educated get into positions of power, most of the time god fathers look for simpletons to put in positions of power because they believe they wont grow too powerful or rebel
