Nigeria Invests $1 Billion In New ICT Incubation Centres

April 16, 2013

VENTURES AFRICA – The Nigerian government has made available $1 billion for the construction of ICT incubation centres throughout the country to stimulate growth in local software content.

Late on Monday, Business Day Nigeria reported that two of the centres at Yaba in Lagos and Tinapa in Calabar will be unveiled this week.

Nigeria’s multi-billion software industry, mostly controlled by external companies, is likely to see growth in home content.

This could be in the next 12 months when the centres come into operation.

Business Day Nigeria quoted Omobola Johnson, the minister of communications technology, as saying the over-arching objective of these incubation centres would be to create 25 successful information communication technology (ICT) firms by 2015.

“The focus of the ministry between now and 2015 is to drive local content and skills development to create employment and sustain the industry,” Johnson told Business Day in Lagos at an industry conference.

“We also want to increase the contributions of the ICT industry to Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP). To achieve this objective, we would focus on software, mobile apps development, ICT entrepreneurship, and innovation.”

Analysts said software and mobile applications growth had developed into an attention zone for the Nigerian government. This is because of Nigeria’s earnest pursuit for another revenue stream to oil and gas.

Statistics have revealed that the value of India’s software exports outstrips $50 billion per year. The Nigerian government is poised to repeat the same feat in Nigeria. Nigeria has more than 170 million people, which means it has abundant human capital.

Business Day Nigeria reported that industry observers have all expressed interest in these centres.

They will help nurture and develop software entrepreneurs who will in turn build successful businesses, according to Business Day.

This money would have made more impact if invested in power or roads. Why do we engage in self deception? Why do we compare ourselves with India that has a technically sound & competent educational/medical system? What is wrong with our leaders?

Of course this is all talk.
What about the nuclear power plants they were going to build?
What about the refineries they were going to build?
What about the 11 new airports they were going to build?
In a couple of years you will ask, what about the $1 billion they were going to spend on incubator centers.

A government that whose right hand doesn't understand what its left hand is doing!!!

"Business Day Nigeria quoted Omobola Johnson, the minister of communications technology, as saying the over-arching objective of these incubation centres would be to create 25 successful information communication technology (ICT) firms by 2015"

When some of those firms begin to emerge, some FOOLS and VULTURES will tell us govt has nothing to do with them because they'r privately owned.

As for @otokx..,who wrote "This money would have made more impact if invested in power or roads". You'r a notorious FAULT FINDER. However, if you had spared even 1% of your brain to assimilate the report before foaming at the mouth, you would have seen clearly that the report is about the ministry Communications Technology doing its JOB. It is not the job of the ministry of communication technology to build roads or power plants. There's ministry of works and there's ministry of power. So mr fault finder, empower yourself with knowledge. Free yourself of IGNORANCE

@sincere9gerian when they criticize don't be suprise or angry cause they are doing their job just as you are doing urs!

Its kuroji nd co job to criticize nd oppose anything FG whether good or bad while it is FG job to work and make them look stupid!

If present opposition get in power any day....it will now be d turn of present FG appologist to criticize nd oppose anything ACN or CPC.

I have come to notice that oppositions are really helping dis country! Their Criticism is putting FG on their toes and making GEJ to work.....without their work development won't be faster....whether they hav being using their sense to criticize or not.

I totally agree to the project as being a misplaced priority.
Ever thought of Awarding contract to Build the decking of a House without a foundation? .
That's wat Nigerian leaders are doing.
The Education system is in Shambles and these are the same brains you want to employ into the ICT project.
All you Nairaland members that have sold your conscience for Monetary gains should think again.
Its a good Idea but there is need for a foundation (SOUND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM)hence why its misplaced

Another dirty scam. I was in the country last week and was going around seeing traffic cameras around the mainland only for me to be told that they were not working. i took closer inspection to one of this cameras only to find out they were dummy surveillance cameras. They blamed hoodlums for stealing and destroying them but in fact they never had cameras there. Just dummies. No body to verify that anything works.$1billion for this. At the end of the day, they will outsource the software to India or china who will give us inferior software. How much did customs pay for their stupid software which never worked?

We don't need a ministry of ICT. Its part of the reason Nigeria has large recurrent expenditure.

Brother, nobody will, under normal circumstance, go against constructive criticism. But the issue here is while ceiticising,, care must be taking to avoid disaffection, to avoid serious and long lasting hate.
Now consider Pastor Bakare words against the president's wife, when he was reigning highly insultive words on her person which are seriously outside politics. These are abuses that can be convinently described as too extreme and therefore cannot be considered as contructive critisim.
What about the Okupe issue where some Devilish journalists described Buhari as sponsorer of boko haram. These are totally outside politics and can be destructive Or have we forgotten the effect of boko haram?

The truth is, most of you should be asking questions, not making statements like you know what you are saying. There is nothing wrong with criticising, but you must have a knowledge of the topic else you will sound foolish.
Many of the software developers in India are elementary and high school drop outs. What has sound education got to do with programming and creativity and vision? Haven't you heard that all the first class are working for the third class? Instead of you to ask questions about how the process will be done and who and how you can participate, you are making baseless and ignorant criticisms. That is the problem of any of you. After everything, you will start to shout that politicians have given the slots to their family members. But you will not mention that you refused to participate. This was how the YOU-WIN came and went and today some peoples lives have been changed forever while some of you are still typing criticisms and insult on NL. Wake up from your slumber my guy!
