Depression is a psychological condition that affects 5-8% of Americans and is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In comparison, the figure for those suffering from this illness in tragically unknown in Nigeria. More worrying is the denial of the existence of clinical depression sufferers in Nigeria by most Nigerians. Depression is more than just a painful emotion of prolonged misery and anguish. Major depression or clinical depression has been described by physicians as a debilitating disease that if left untreated can lead to self harm or suicide.

Depression doesn’t have to lead to suicide if it is treated and controlled. Causes of depression are usually obscure and range between individuals, but there are some common triggers that can be environmental or biological.

The symptoms of depression are usually a mixture of various afflictions such as, sadness, poor concentration, fatigue or insomnia, appetite disturbances and morbid thoughts.

Treatment for depression is usually prescribed by medical professional and involves a combination of medicine, self help and therapies. Below are just some starting points to help you tackle the blues before you deem it necessary to seek medical help.

Pray and Meditate

Believe it or not prayer has a natural therapeutic effect. One study indicates that sufferers of depression and anxiety improve in their health when they were part of a person-to-person contact prayer group. Another study indicates that meditation opens ones mind lessens the burden and stigma that comes with depression.

Yoga

Yoga is a simple way to relieve yourself from the burden of depression by engaging in some relaxing exercise. Yoga enthusiasts have seen remarkable improvement in both their physical and psychological health. Yoga has been known to help with weight loss and improve sleeping patterns. Try Yoga to help free your mind and body.

Travel to New Places

Traveling especially on vacation has a way of putting ones life in positive perspective. Distancing yourself from your familiar environment even for a short while is great for lifting your spirits and providing much needed breathing space.

Try new Things

Picking up one or two new hobbies can act as much needed temporary release from the daily stresses of your life. Keeping your mind busy with refreshing or challenging activities can be enjoyable. Try new things and step out of your comfort zone.

Socialize More

Make new friends, meet new fun and interesting people and above all avoid negative or depressed individuals until you fully recovered from your own depression. The power of human interaction especially those that enable you to share comic experiences and bond over inspiring moments are truly healing.
