Opon Imo Launched By Osun Today by EkoAtlantic: 8:02am On Jun 03, 2013
Written by  Oluwole Ige and Moyosore Solarin. 3-6-2013 OSUN State government will, today, launch customised computer tablets, “Opon-Imo,” in Ilesa.

The tablets will be distributed among students of Senior Secondary School (SSS) classes in public secondary schools in the state.

Built to improve learning among secondary school students in the state and to further prepare them for external and internal examinations, the tablets, designed in the form of a mini iPad, would be distributed to the students free-of-charge.

According to the deputy governor, who doubles as the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Titilayo Laoye-Tomori,  the Governor Rauf Aregbesola-led government was determined to ensure that students from the state were equipped to meet up with the high standards needed to excel in the world of learning and research.

The tablets, she added, “are installed with softwares of lesson notes and textbooks on 17 subjects offered by students of secondary schools, as well as past questions and answers on the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), National Examination Council (NECO) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).”

The launch and distribution of the computer tablets, which also contain other extra-curricular subjects, including sexuality education, entrepreneurship, civic and computer education, yoruba history and traditional religion, according to the deputy governor, “is a further attestation to the resolute pursuit of innovation in the state education sector.”

Like i said in another thread a few months back, this initiative is very expensive especially for a state like Osun that is not oil driven. It's sustenance is what worries me. There are better ways to give students access to whatever learning curve that's not so expensive. Let's take it one step at a time.

But one thing i like most about Aregbesola is his nack for making his governance an Africanist one. These are the kind of people we need as leaders in Africa as their leadership has that African feel to it.

Is there actually anything in SouthWest you guys don't complain of?

Lagos opens Ikoyi-Lekki link bridge--"Fashola is only building Lagos for the rich"

Oyo commissions Mokola bridge--"The bridge is not wide enough"

Ogun opens flyover--"why must everything be in Abeokuta?"

Nigeria's biggest refinery to be built in Ondo--"Why must it be ondo and not Akwa-Ibom?"

Osun to name airport After MKO--"what is Osun going to do with airport?"

Samsung opens its biggest workshop in Ekiti--"can
Ekiti people buy samsung products"

It flows in you guys blood, "bad belleism and Jealousy"

Who sought your opinion?

Are you done giving your useless opinion to your useless back water 'no do well' governor? Or is the state of Osun now part of Lagos where your imaginary tax is used "injudiciously"?

What manner of 'etaanu' is this, ke?

Afam4eva 30,000 naira on every student is not expensive considering the benefits of the project, investing our human resource is what would make this nation great not some foreign investment the would pay graduate 30,000 naira to work in a grocery store.

Good policy by osun. We should embrace e-learning facilities. I only hope there's a firewall that restricts certain sites on the tablets otherwise the students will be busy surfing porn sites instead of learning

Sorry not everybody is as poor as a bush rat like you. and who says the students have to subscribe for internet service? The tablets come with per-installed educational software. In fact even if you need to have internet, who says they can't afford it when even student can pay N1,400 for BIS. This initiative has been well thought out the Osun state Government, so Mr. Man, you should keep quite.

Q
DOES THE DEVICE HAVE INTERNET?

A
The current version of Opón Ìmò has Internet deactivated to prevent the distraction this may cause to students at this level of education.

In addition, the Internet does not drive Opón Ìmò content, because of the unstable nature of current data networks in our country and the huge data requiremenst the device would have had.

As such, content is domiciled strictly on the Tablet.
This approach Is a Nigerian adaptation, that is believed to be suitable for developing Nations where internet connectivity can still be a challenge.
