The University of Lagos has announced the expulsion of 1,032 students for alleged poor academic performance.

The list of the affected students was contained in the current edition of the Campus News bulletin of the institution with ISSN No 0891-5559 with Volume number XV11. No 15. A copy of the bulletin was obtained by our correspondent on Friday.

According to the bulletin, the senate of the institution arrived at the decision to ”advise the students to withdraw” from the institution after their failure to meet the required cumulative grade point average of 1.0. According to the bulletin, Faculty of Business Administration with 291 students has the highest number of expelled students while Faculty of Pharmacy with three students has the least.

Faculty of Science 227 students came second, Arts has 147 to come third while 90 students from the Faculty of Engineering were asked to withdraw from the institution.

Others are Faculty of Education 72, Social Sciences, 67, Environmental Sciences 25 and Law, 10.

The bulletin stated that the number of the affected students include those that failed to meet the required CGPA between August 2006 and December 2007.

Giving the breakdown of the number of expelled students on departmental basis, the bulletin stated that Department of Business Administration with 92 students has the largest number, while Departments of Educational Foundations, Geography and Marine Sciences has one student each.

Department of Philosophy came second with 90 students, Banking and Finance has 72, International Relations and Management, 65, Accounting 62, Actuarial Science and Insurance, 59 while Botany and Microbiology has 51 students on the list of expelled students.

The university, however, asked the dismissed students who had a counter-claim or complaint to take his or her complaints to the Head, Academic Affairs of the institution.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tolu Odugbemi, said that the institution‘s renewed drive for excellence would be pursued to a logical conclusion.

According to him, the university would spare no efforts at instilling the spirit of hard work and scholarship in the students.

He said, ”The university is not a place for lazy people, if you cannot cope, rather than wasting your time in the university, we will send you back home, maybe when you get back home you will discover your talent and pursue it. But here there is not going to be room for indolence. If you don‘t make the required grade, then you are out.”

He said the university would spare no efforts at ensuring that the institution lives up to its reputation as a university of first choice and a centre of excellence.

Odugbemi, who restated the commitment of the management to making UNILAG the first Nigerian university to be ranked among the first 200 in the world, disclosed that measures that would aid the achievement of this lofty dream were being taken by the 46-year-old institution.

Odugbemi who spoke in an interview with our correspondent said these measures included the strengthening of the institution‘s website through robust investment in information communication and technology equipment; and encouragement of well researched publications by faculty members.

Others he said are distribution of laptops to department with voluminous presence on the university‘s website; upgrading of teaching and physical facilities; award of scholarship to indigent and brilliant students; and provision of work study to help needy students.

He said, ”In the past one, we have accorded priority attention to the development of ICT on campus because of ICT‘s enabling role in supporting our core mandate of teaching, learning, research and community service.”

He added that within the period under review, internet and intranet services had been expanded with access given to academic and administrative areas.

According to Odugbemi, the university‘s website has been redesigned, upgraded and was being constantly upgraded.

”The website has now assumed the level of a portal reflecting the academic status of the university as well as its academic orientation and culture.”

These measures, he said, were being taken to place the institution in a better position to attract global attention and possible positive rating during the annual webometric rankings for universities across the globe.

To ensure massive presence of the institution‘s lecturers‘ publications on the site, Odugbemi, said that each department had been directed to encourage faculty members to upload well researched publications in national and international journals on the internet.

This effort, the vice chancellor said, had been yielding fruits, saying that from a mere 234 posted on the site last year, the number of publications on the institution‘s website had risen to over 8,000.

”We commend our lecturers who have made this possible but we seek their support to increase this number to about 10,000 within the next three months,” he said.

He added that to motivate lecturers to contribute to this effort, the management few weeks ago gave out laptops to departments with 50 publications and above on the university‘s website as at January 31, this year.

Odugbemi added that the prize would be raised for any department that was able to upload 100 or more additional publications on the institution‘s website by June 30, this year.

He said that the purpose for these efforts was to increase the feasibility of UNILAG on the internet so that agencies in charge of global ranking of universities could take notice of the good works being done at the institution.

”The new challenge to departments is placement on the UNILAG website of a 100 or more publications by June 30, this year for academic departments and 20 or more publications for non-academic departments such as bursary, registry and medical centre,” he said.

He added that in order to increase the compudensity in the university, more computers had been acquired while the internet bandwidth size had been increased from 5mbps/2mbps to 7mbps/4mbps.

He added, ”The fibre optics infrastructure of the College of Medicine which has been down for some time was resuscitated. As at now, all fibre optics links to key academic and administrative buildings are functioning. Work is in progress to provide structured Local Area Network for faculties and departments/units that do not have ant LAN or those that have unstructured LANs.”

The vice chancellor added that the Senate and the Council Chambers of the institution are now enabled to connect the internet unhindered through the creation of ”hot spots for internet connectivity.”

This facility, he added, was being extended to other areas including postgraduate hall of residence.
