Dear Nairalanders;

World Bank indicts Jonathan’s government, says massive poverty, unemployment killing Nigerians

The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly, the World Bank says.

The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly, revealing a perplexing contrast between the nation’s economic statistics on rapid economic growth and minimal welfare improvements for much of the population, the World Bank has said.

“Poverty rates remain high in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas. These rates declined between 2003-2004 and 2009- 2010, although not nearly as fast as would be expected from the pace of economic growth in the country,” the World Bank said in its ‘Nigeria Economic Report’ May, 2013.

“While the officially reported growth rates of GDP well exceed population growth in the country, the pace of poverty reduction does not, this implies that the number of poor Nigerians living below the poverty line has grown measurably,” the report stated.

The World Bank said the first Nigeria Economic Report is designed to give some attention to longer term trends in the country, including the puzzle of why a decade of rapid GDP growth by official statistics, concentrated in the pro-poor areas of agriculture and trade, did not bring stronger welfare and employment benefits to the population.

Aside from the increase in poverty, the organisation said progress towards a number of the other Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria has also been disappointing , stating that Nigeria was ranked 153 out of 186 countries in the 2013 United Nations Human Development Index, as unemployment rates have been steadily increasing and younger Nigerians are encountering increasing difficulty in finding gainful employment.

The organisation said available data on unemployment suggest a similar story.

“Job creation in Nigeria has been inadequate to keep pace with the expanding working age population. The official unemployment rate has steadily increased from 12% of the working age population in 2006 to 24% in 2011. Preliminary indications are that this upward trend continued in 2012.

Another issue the report highlighted was that the official definition of employment in Nigeria (less than 40 hours worked in the past week) is unusual, and is therefore not comparable to that in most other countries. The negative dynamic is very consistent, however, with perceptions of the population of increasing difficulties for finding gainful employment. Going by this, the problem in Nigeria might best be interpreted as underemployment in contrast to unemployment proper.

Variance in reported statistics and reality

Reports over the recent years have continued to highlight the concern that the Nigerian economic statistics reveals a puzzling contrast between rapid economic growth and quite minimal welfare improvements for much of the population.

Nigeria’s annual growth rates that average over 7 per cent in official data during the last decade place the nation among the fastest growing economies in the world. This growth has been concentrated particularly in trade and agriculture, which would suggest substantial welfare benefits for many Nigerians.

“Nevertheless, improvements in social welfare indicators have been much slower than would be expected in the context of this growth. Poverty reduction and job creation have not kept pace with population growth, implying social distress for an increasing number of Nigerians. Progress toward the fulfillment of many of the Millennium Development Goals has been slow, and the country ranked 153 out of 186 countries in the 2013 United Nations Human Development Index” the World Bank said.

The Organisation said further data collection and investigations will be necessary to clarify this picture of what factors are responsible or explain the disparities between economic growth and the welfare indicators of the nation.

“Given the seeming inconsistencies between the national accounts data summarized above and statistics based on other surveys, it is imperative to conduct further investigations and statistical tests to uncover the true growth and development story in Nigeria” the World Bank said.

In a sense, reported improved economic growth figures have not translated into the development of the people. And that, instead, Nigerians are being further improvised...

How can the World Bank say this?!

Have they not seen that 1.2million jobs has been created by the mining sector?

Have they not seen that our legislators are the most paid in the world?

Which President can boast of a billion naira food budget?

Why must all these scamming agencies continue to pull down the hard-stealing efforts of Jonathan and his crooks? Why why why?!!!

I have always said it ngozi and her team should show how our economy is growing with respect to unemployment rate. Why didn't they mention this in their mid term broadcast.

Typical ACN/CPC propaganda thread... grin grin grin

So because world bank released a may 2013 report and indicated an increase in poverty rate, they are indicting GEJ? dumb propaganda!

So anytime the US jobs report comes out and is poor, they are indicting Obama? The UK poverty rate is growing too so they must be indicting the PM! lol

You people dont know the difference between criticism and hatred. If a world bank report comes out, you create a thread and debate all the issues sorrounding it, not tag it an indictment on GEJ. Stop playing politics with everything, duh!

Anyway, what do you even expect from people who oppose the flushing out of Boko Haram.

It is the JOINT responsibility of the states, federal and local govt to create jobs and eradicate poverty.

The national purse is shared 50-50 by the federal govt on one hand and the states and local govt on the other (via state-local govt joint account).

So, while we ask how many jobs the federal govt has created in the last few years and what percentage of Nigerians have been lifted out of poverty through policies and programmes at the federal level, we should NOT forget the states.

How are the states and local govts creating jobs and eradicating poverty with their share of the national purse? How many jobs has Fashola or Sullivan Chime created in the last few years? These are critical questions that demand answers.

The problem of lack of jobs and increasing poverty cannot be solved without looking at the issue of exponential increase in population. But how can we tackle the problem of population if Buhari and other northern leaders see population as a tool for winning elections, wrecking havoc and earning more funds from the national purse?

In the long run, if we TRUELY want to drastically cut down unemployment rate and poverty, we MUST re-structure this country. Power must be de-centralised down to the states. The present arrangement where Abuja tries to feed 160million people can only breed more poverty and unemployment. It should be the other way round. It is the 160million people that should feed Abuja. In other words, the states must be allowed to harness their human and material resources for development and pay taxes to the centre. This is the only way forward.

But unfortunately, the northern politicians, with eyes fixated on oil money, will resist any attempt to re-structure this country. Currently, even passage of PIB is witnessing major resistance from the north.

Until the much needed re-structuring happens, we have to make do with what can be achieved under the present arrangement. Also the Boko Haram madness must have impacted negatively in the poverty and unemployment rates in the northern states in the last 2yrs (usually the bulk of these negative data emanates from the north and weighs down on the rest of the country)

from what i see, alot of companies are sprouting but, we have no rigid gov't policy, these make the employers very brutal, some people work and yet can't eat 3 square meals.check out Senegal and Ghana, as a foreign investor in those places, you [b]must employ more than 60% of their indigenes, but here, some coys even employ less than 40% of Nigerian, bring their people from outside to work in their coys, and transport the money to their country. That is the problem. More companies but LESS NIGERIANS EMPLOYED.. We need a strong leader that can stand up to the challenge

The truth about the voodoo economics going on in abuja is out. The thing with thieves is that they are too comfortable to think beyond their ability to steal. Wetin dey sweet dey kill. By the time they realise it will be too late. 24% unemployment in the working age. No wonder they are fighting against okada ban. More unemployed people. Okada na job for human being? Shior! Instead of focusing on forcing foreign firms to hire 70%-80% Nigerian staff. They will even let them bomb us and run away.

Who appoints World Bank to be a watchdog over Jonathan's government, who has transformed Nigeria like no other president before him.

Serious countries don't regard any ratings from this useless organisation called World Bank. The same Bank that allowed Soludo and Obj to whittle our economy, which the present Administration has just cleared. Where was the so-called world bank when the euro crisis was humming? Any conspiracy to bring down this government will NEVER succeed. GEJ till 2019. cool
