UNIUYO; Students Protests Turned Riot, four FEARED DEAD!!! by slimdude(m): 8:30pm On Jun 12, 2013
Wednesday 12 June 2013 was another bright and peaceful day at the University of Uyo and environs until the "long incubated grievance" in the minds of students exploded, resulting in a protest which gradually transformed the school and its environs into a "war-zone", as the police staged its armoury in a mission to ground the protesting students.

Students of the science and engineering faculties had earlier mobilised themselves at about 10am, blocking the school's main gate, shutting other major entrances to the school even as they marched to several lecture halls, disrupting on-going academic activities and forcing other students out of the lecture halls.

The protest took a dramatic turn when the students moved to major roads in the metropolis. Ikpa road, Ikot Ekpene road and other major roads were barricaded by the students, hampering traffic flow and disrupting economic activities. At this point, men of the Nigerian Mobile Police force and other joint forces were deployed to the affected areas.
The protest then transformed into a "war" between the students and men of the force. In a bid to disperse the protesting students, some men of the mobile police force fired sporadically in the air as others shot canisters of tear-gas at the students who caught and threw the canisters back at the police men.
Unconfirmed information at time of this report has it that a geology student and three other students were shot dead as the riot progressed.
The Vice Chancellor's office and the security post at the school's main-gate
Were set on fire by the rioting students.
Another eye witness account has it that one student sustained gun-shot injury on his hand.

Several students bared their minds on reason for the protest turned riot.
Some said that the engineering and science faculties which were located at the main-campus Ikpa road were relocated to Nwaiba road which is far away from the main campus where students hostels are located, as a result, the students faced constraints in transporting themselves down to the permanent site for lectures. They alleged that the school management didn't build any hostels for them at the permanent site, neither have they made arrangements in providing buses or other means to transport them down to the permanent site daily, they decided to stage a protest when the school management released a publication asking them to fare their transport to the permanent site daily.
Other students who joined the protests alleged that the school management has been over-charging them on fees such as the General Studies registration fee which is charged at two thousand naira.

Students of the University have vacated the campus, most of them leaving with nothing but just their credentials, as a result of directives from the school management which compelled the students to leave before 6pm on the day of the riot. Men of the Mobile police force have been deployed at strategic points in and around the school premises, enforcing the school management's directive.
