When I said this was the best governor in Nigeria I was attacked. Forget your own ungratefulness, if this was done an another state we wouldn't hear the end of it. Amaechi has rebuilt the state to a great degree. You can say you don't like him without denying the amount of development based work. Even socially the state is better off as it's no longer Nigeria's crime, kidnapping and smuggling capital.

This are laudable projects no doubt cutting across the entire Rivers State. Supervision of health personnel including doctors posted to rural areas remains a challenge. Amaechi's major problem is not based on performance but talkative and arrogance. He recently admitted on radio programme that he was used to talking the way he does and such she be forgiven for that.

will post more health centres as i get them.....honestly speaking they are littered everywhere but the free medical care comes at a slight discomfort to many.....you have to produce evidence of paying tax in the state, national ID card and some other requirements i cant remember now otherwise you go the 'paid' route...

Secondary health centres....not too many though

Amaechi leads by a wide margin. Though not a saint, his work is more commensurate with his huge income than his other counterparts that go about painting roads and installing 1000 Dollar fountains.

Newly-built N2bn dental hospital excites Port Harcourt residents

An edifice housing a world-class medical facility in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, is thrilling residents, writes CHUKWUDI AKASIKE

The Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway is about the busiest among the major roads in the Rivers State capital, as far as traffic is concerned. By the sides of the road from Eleme Junction to Isaac Boro Park, are some buildings housing many businesses such as electronic and telecommunication shops, as well as petrol stations.

On both sides of the highway, just before you get to Isaac Boro Park, are beautiful structures, housing the state sector of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the South-South Zone of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria.

However, you can’t but notice the most outstanding and imposing among the structures near Garrison Bus-Stop.

It’s a glass house known as the Rivers State Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital. The health facility was constructed by Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s administration to solve problems related with the tooth, mouth and other parts of the face. The structure is even rated to be among the best in Africa in the category of dental and maxillofacial hospitals.

Apart from its outward appeal, its interior boasts other health facilities such as dental chairs, theatres of international standards and radiological equipment.

A Port Harcourt-based medical practitioner, Dr. Damilola Onasanya, said the hospital would go a long way to solve oral and facial problems. He commended the hospital location as good and accessible in the state capital.

Onasanya noted that the only challenge with the imposing structure was the perception people might have about it.

He said when an average Nigerian sees the facility, he could quickly conclude that it is for the rich.

“As a result of this, the people need to be properly informed about the facility, so that everybody that needs to visit the place for check-up or treatment can have easy access to it. The hospital is very important because those with dental challenges will be able to get treatment there,” Onasanya says.

He canvassed free treatment at the hospital as a way of ensuring that the objective of establishing it was achieved.

Another resident, Mr. Maxwell Njaka, described the medical facility as one of the best he had seen in the country.

Njaka, a student of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, said that it would be difficult for an average Nigerian to have access to the hospital due to the belief that its medical bill might be unaffordable.

“When you pass through Garrison, you must have a glance at the imposing structure because of its beauty. It is one project that the people of the state are proud of. But can poor students like me afford the services in this type of hospital?” Njaka asks.

But the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, allayed the fears expressed by the people. He maintained that the government was running free medical services in the state. He said registered indigenes and those working in the state civil service, would be treated for free at the hospital.

Parker explained that the hospital gulped over N2bn, adding, “The hospital is not just to render services but to train people in Rivers State and in Nigeria. The hospital is equipped to do almost everything that it can do. Even in South Africa, there is no dental and maxillofacial hospital like the one we have here in Rivers State. It is about the only one around sub-Saharan Africa. I don’t think the catchment area is wide and we expect it to be a specialist hospital.”

The commissioner said that the contractor recently informed the state government that job on the site and installation of equipment had been completed.

According to him, an American and a European group will run it.

It was learnt that though some skeletal work had begun on the right wing of the hospital, full dental and maxillofacial services would commence before the end of the year.

“The Dental and Maxillofacial Hospital we have there at Garrison is probably the only one of that capacity in Africa. It has 24 dental chairs, about theatres, emergency and in-patient facilities and radiological equipment,” Parker adds.

He expressed optimism that all health problems concerning toothache and other maxillofacial challenges would be handled in the hospital. He said that sufferers of such health difficulties would not need to travel to Europe, India or America to get such treatment again.

While PDP governors are commissioning government funded projects, Fashola is busy commissioning PPP projects with zero or near zero state government contribution.

Ok, we shall use it to campaign for the PDP in 2015. bring them on. However, posting pictures on NL which is the new trend is not the best way for political and government appraisal. I honestly know what I'm saying. I won't say more because Jesus spoke in parables for the same reason.

So are you trying to tell me that Rivers state had no "physical structures" before Amaechi became governor?

Let me tell you what I expect to see from a thread like this. I expect pictures of well-stocked pharmacies with authentic (not fake) and unexpired drugs, highly qualified and well-paid medical staff, state-of the-art medical equipment and facilities with well-functioning support services and infrastructure.

Erecting new physical structures is only a minute part of the solution.

Let's deal with substance, please.

Good.

Why not show us pictures of these equipment, so that we can appreciate the progress being made?

It's not all about buildings.

i agree.will try to get photos of the insides of these structures though i cant seem to figure out how to do it considering the fact that nigerians are photophobic... grin.but that aside we all saw what he did with the primary schools.do you really think the health centres are going to be any different??
i remember a nairalander saying some days ago how his wife had a successful CS in one of them centres and he was completely satisfied with the care she recieved.i dont see that being done in 'empty' structures.

This thread as titled says Amaechi's health care centers and not your story about physical structures. Must be a sad case of inability to read and comprehend on your part, but that was off topic and if it is your wish to discuss availability of phisical structures before Amaechi, why not start your own thread and discuss that till you turn blue?

Also, if your main concern here is the availabilty of drugs at these hospitals, why not take a trip to these hospitals to nurse that concern to your satisfaction and while at it, bless us with the info on NL?

You really don't have to derail the thread with made up silly and irrelevant./ apples and oranges .

Ok. Lemme give Amaechi the benefit of the doubt. grin

Seriously though, I actually hear he's doing a rather decent job. I only raised that issue to highlight the general tendency of most Nigerians to look at things like this merely from the surface.

He's certainly much better than the abject failures neighbouring Bayelsans have been cursed with.
