Director-General and Chief Executive, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Barrister Chris E. Onyemenam, has said that about 70 per cent of the national identity cards currently in circulation are fake.

Onyemenam, who made this assertion at a forum organised by NIMC added that more than 100 million Nigerians especially in the rural areas have been living without national identity cards.

The NIMC DG said the concentration of populations and activities in the urban areas has compelled rural dwellers to suffer serious neglect during national identity card registration processes.

Onyemenam said national identity card enrolment units of NIMC are to be established in each of the 774 local government headquarters in the country before the third quarter of this year.

Onyemenam stated that previous efforts at registering Nigerians focused on the issuance of identity cards, NIMC this time around would introduced novel parameters to ensure that the process meets international standards.

He said NIMC is poised to create awareness on the importance of registration, saying national identity cards in the future would become the basis for all government transactions in the country.

Also speaking, chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Interior, Umar Bature, who spoke through a member of the committee, said the identity card scheme would help in crime prevention and control.

He stated that the registration would provide reliable database for national planning as well as ease the process of infrastructural management in the country while facilitating the provision of other social services.

Why shouldn't there be fake when you cannot provide the originals after millions budgeted to you.

Nigerians, you know, can fill vacuum created by incompetence. take for instance when fuel was case, we had adulterated fake product just to fill the void. Now there is genuine product available easily through official means, the fake disappear.

My name was mis-spelt on my own national I'd. I don't even make use of that thrash. Driver's license, work place I'd and voter's card are all good. This national I'd can go to bed. #myopinion#

The National Identify Management Commission has said the ongoing registration exercise will check cases of bank fraud in the country.

The commission expressed optimism that the new identity numbers would tackle the problem of insecurity.

The Director-General, NIMC, Mr. Chris Onyemenam, who stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, also displayed equipment already installed to facilitate the registration exercise.

According to him, more than 500,000 Nigerians have so far been registered, adding that the issuance of the new identity cards would begin in September.

Onyemenam said, “The new identification numbers will stem the tide of crimes and corrupt practices in both the public and private sectors. The new identity card will checkmate bank frauds. That is the reason why the Bankers’ Committee is interested in developing a database.

“No matter the amount of money they have, it will take them a long time to get to where we are. We need to work on that. When we streamline, it will be easy to identify fraud cases.

“The registration is a continuous process and has no timeline. Compare it with the case of opening a new branch of a bank. They operate everyday without any timeframe. Right now, the enrolment centres we have are not enough.

“In each state, there are 10 enrolment units and are capable of enrolling 500 people a day. We hope to open local government enrolment centres before the year ends. We are currently discussing with government agencies on how we can open registration centres in their offices. This is pending when the private sector will fully get involved.”

u should take along a means of identification or else u wont be attended to(did mine in abuja),
u can present ur, voter's card, international passport or ur workplace i.d

the national ID card does not serve any purpose, so why would people be issuing fake ones?

drivers license, tax clearance and the like are all required in our daily activities. the national ID card is not required for anything. police and oher govt officials do not ask for it.
there is no market whatsoever for forging it

Mine might be one of those 70%, na my cousin collect am for me and that to from 'xyz' govt office

now u gonna take my finger print; add to ur voting carts, tell the world GEJ won the election without our prior votes comes 2015. I will wait till after 2015 election, after all i have other forms of identification. If it is so serious i will tender my current one, if u refuse then we shall head straight to court.

But wait oh! How about those who applied for jobs at NIMC and were made to travel as far as PHC to Ilorin in Kwara state? Like my self and yet not a single word from them. Only for me to visit the NIMC office here in phc to see some arrogant old chaps struggling to use the computer as enrollment officers.

Supported. That is exactly what we need in this country. Though the National I'd card is equally important, but for the purpose of unemployment & benefits, such things like the (NI numbers as in the UK) social security number is very important.

Even if the national ID cards were authentic ones, of what use would they serve without a national database

It will be grate if government make every body to have it.
