What markup language does nairaland use for styling it's posts & comments? eg: the smiley's, bold, quotes, etc. I would have thought they were HTML but HTML comes in angled brackets: "<element></element>" while this nairaland ones are in square brackets: "[element][/element]".

I guess by now you should've gotten your answer after many years... But just in case you haven't, it's called a templating engine... Smarty (PHP) is an example, but I think Nairaland uses Python (Probably Django to be specific) but don't know of the templating engine or library they use, it could have as well been bundled along with SMF.
