Cos from engine to transmission to wiring etc. go the same way for both cars.

He is telling you that the two cars are from the same company. Lexus is luxury end of Toyota vehicles. I didn't want to tell you specifically on what to buy, that is why I said you should check car review websites to make your decision.

That guy saying highlander is better only gave you advice based on what he sees people buying but not from a convincing POV

Yes, they are the are almost the same technically, but physically they carry different shell and interior designs making their spare parts value differ.
The highlander parts are cheaper in the market.

They have parts numbers for DIY tasks as well as toyota parts that fit on the lexus

Saying the highlanders parts are cheaper than lexus parts is utter Tosh.

Its 2013, we have the internet, why should a parts seller in ladipo or apo cheat you by selling parts based on a brand. Buy your original parts from the USA or UK and have them shipped.

This choice depends on a number of factors which I would explain here. 1. Cost of purchase: although toyota and lexus are wearing different badge but they are basically same vehicles from toyota. Lexus is just a luxury division of toyota targeted at people with taste for luxury especially Americans. This entails that lexus is more expensive than toyota. 2. Reliability rating: we all know that toyota toyota is very reliable and they last long depending on how you handle them with fewer complains infact the last time I checked, Honda was 1st, toyota was 2nd, mercedes was 3rd and lexus was 6th. (See picture below) but that said, it doesn't mean you will have to become a regular guest to your mechanics garage (except for routine maintenance and servicing). 3. Cost of replacement parts: as with all luxury items, cost of fixing broken down parts are generally more expensive than their economic conscious counterparts. Even in Nigeria, when you go to places to buy parts for replacement you pay more because its a lexus eg the headlight casing. And when you visit a bigger garage or toyota toyota authorized service outlets you are bound to pay more because you brought in a lexus but that aside, you are given a special treatment because of that same luxury product you brought in. 4. Resale value: most lexus owners stand to enjoy higher resale value on their vehicles when compared to toyota owners. 5. Exclusivity: stand on a major streets and you might count 18 highlander passing before you see 3 RX300/RX330/RX350. Reason is they don't come cheap compared to highlander. 6. Gadgets and Optional extra: we know luxury car makers tend to spoil their customers silly with standard premium/high-end gadgets installed in their car as opposed to regular/economy car makers which only install limited equipment as standard and give you a checklist to choose from (the more options choosen the higher the price quickly goes) lexus and toyota still use this antics. 7. Looks and practicality: the lexus looks and feels good and it gives a sense of class, oppulence, distinction, fulfilment because its a luxury vehicle which is generally a tool of the higher income earners. Toyota on the other hand gives a sense of easy societal blend (especially in a country like Nigeria where you might need to keep a lower profile so as not to displease some envious folks or folks wey no get joy say u dey progress). Both are good as daily drivers car. But toyota is more easier on gas when you go for models with 4 cylinder engines front wheel drive when compared to lexus standard V6 ( as for fuel economy, depend on your driving style). On the whole lexus is a better comfortable car to look at and drive while toyota is modest. 8. Don't expect that sporty feel you'd get from a FX35 or ML350 or X3 to be felt in a highlander or lexus. They are just cars that takes you from point A to point B but dey aren't meant f®я sports. Toyota/lexus are very bland vehicles that's why I dislike them
