Tourism in Anambra State is set to blossom with the start of work at Agulu Lake Hotel Resort. The governor, Peter Obi, who visited the hotel, said the project was in line with the policy of the state government to develop all sectors simultaneously encapsulated in Anambra State Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS).

Located beside the serene Agulu lake, the biggest lake in Anambra State, Obi said the resort would be of benefit to the state especially as it is located within the Anambra State capital territory. “You know I am a corporate man; many corporations approach me daily to hold their annual general meetings in Awka but lack of facilities is one of the major constraint. With the Agulu Lake Hotel Resort, the capital territory will not only boast of an internationally standard hotel but will also have a hotel located in one of the best areas for such purpose”, Obi said.

The governor, who promised that his government will deliver the project completed, said it was one of the projects he will be personally supervising routinely because of its strategic importance and huge economic and employment potentials for the state.

He recalled that the resort was first conceived in the early 1970s in the old Eastern Region together with the Nike Lake Resort and regretted that while Nike had been achieved, Agulu Lake Resort remained a still-birth until now.

Meanwhile, Obi also inspected the two old bridges at the Agulu Lake by pass and said that new, strong bridges would be constructed to replace the old ones that had weak bases and the road expanded to contain the anticipated increase in traffic the resort centre would create.

When completed, the resort will boast of modern facilities including an International Conference Centre. It is being constructed by a Chinese company.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Works, Calistus Ilozumba, said the project was approved by the Exco and emphasized the urgency and need for the project to be completed as soon as possible for its benefit to the state.

Beautiful concept.

We tend to take things for granted, but really, these are signs that the country IS developing. I mean look at Awka.

I don't know how old some of you guys are but Awka back in the day was little more than a large village with just one tarred road passing through its center, a place characterised by quaint huts and the odd village bungalow.

Today, it's a totally different place, even preparing to host a shopping mall with Shoprite and now, an ultra modern resort and international convention center.

Times are really changing!!

Same news from Guardian Newspaper:

HOPES of making Anambra a tourism destination in the South East may soon be achieved, if the latest effort by the authorities is anything to go by.

The State has recently awarded the contract to a Chinese building and civil engineering firm - Soy Groan Construction Company Nigeria Limited, drive the Agulu Lake Hotel resort to boost tourism in the state. The project will gulp about N2 billion and consists of a four- storey building, with conference centre, shopping malls and other amenities. The contract is expected to be executed in nine months.

Already, the contractor has moved to site and started clearing and other preliminary work.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Obi who visited the site last week said that the project was in line with the policy of the state government to develop all sectors simultaneously encapsulated in Anambra State Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS).

Obi said that the resort would be of much benefit to the state, especially in providing the needed accommodation and other facilities to visitors, saying that it is located within the State Capital Territory.

“With the Agulu Lake Hotel Resort, the capital territory will not only boast of an internationally standard hotel but will also have a hotel located in one of the best areas for such purpose.

Obi who recalled that the resort was first conceived in the early 1970s in the old eastern region together with the Nike Lake Resort, regretted that Agulu Lake Resort had remained stillbirth until now.

The Commissioner for Works, Calistus Ilozumba, an architect told newsmen that the project would be completed as soon as possible because of its tremendous benefits to the State.

According to him, the Governor had directed all relevant ministries, especially Housing and Works to pay particular attention to the project.

He s got just about 8 months actually but i dont think obi is the type that would live the state's treasury dry. Remember he has been doing a lot of savings overtime
