Listen to the protesters and resolve their issues or you will be overthrown, that is the message the army is sending to Mr. Morsi.

Al Jazeera reports from Cairo, Egypt

Army delivers ultimatum to end Egypt crisis
President Mohamed Morsi and opposition groups told they have 48 hours to calm protests, or face intervention.
Gregg Carlstrom 01 Jul 2013 20:22

Cairo -The Egyptian army has asked President Mohamed Morsi to resolve huge protests against his rule or face intervention within 48 hours, placing huge pressure on country's first democratically elected leader.

In a statement on Monday, the army called on all groups – opposition and pro-Morsi alike – to resolve the situation. "The armed forces repeat their call for the people's demands to be met and give everyone 48 hours as a last chance.

"The national security of the state is in severe danger", it said, adding that if there was no resolution the army, "will be obliged by its patriotic and historic responsibilities ... to announce a road map for the future and the steps for overseeing its implementation, with participation of all patriotic and sincere parties and movements."

It described the mass protests on Sunday that brought out millions of Egyptians demanding President Morsi's resignation as "glorious".

It said protesters expressed their opinion "in peaceful and civilised manner", and that "it is necessary that the people get a reply ... to their calls".

Hours later, the army insisted in a second statement that it was not carrying out a coup, and said that it would not be part of the government.

'Huge pressure'

Al Jazeera's chief political analyst Marwan Bishara said the statement undermined the authority of Morsi.

"For the army to give the president 48 hours warning, the army are saying who is the boss," he said. "Morsi is no longer the same president as this morning in the eyes of those on the streets."

He said the statement placed "huge pressure" on the president to resolve the protests, "otherwise we can expect army intervention".

"That could be taking over the streets or taking over the government. This message is to the president. This undercuts his authority."

Morsi was later photographed at the presidential palace in Cairo meeting the prime minister, Hisham Qandil, and defence minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Helicopters trail Egyptian flags over Tahrir Square, Cairo.

Hours after the army's statement, helicopters flew over Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cradle of the 2011 revolution, trailing Egyptian flags to cheers of the crowd below. A loudspeaker blared: "The army and the people are one hand".

Tamarod, the main opposition group that has organised the protests, said the army statement showed it was taking the people's side. It urged its supporters to stay on the streets and squares of Egypt until Morsi's rule was ended.

The presidency cancelled a news conference due to take place late on Monday, while there was no statement forthcoming from the Muslim Brotherhood.

The army statment came hours after five of Morsi's ministers resigned. They were the tourism minister, Hisham Zaazou; communication and IT minister Atef Helmi; the minister for legal and parliamentary affairs, Hatem Bagato; water minister Abdel Qawy Khalifa; and environment minister Khaled Abdel-Aal.

Tourism minister Zazou tried to resign last month after Morsi appointed Adel al-Khayat, a member of an Islamist party linked to a massacre of tourists in Luxor, as governor of the temple city. Khayat later quit.

Brotherhood HQ burned

Egypt's street have been filled with pro and anti-Morsi protests since Sunday. In the capital, Cairo, the official building of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood to which Morsi belongs, was set ablaze before people stormed and looted the building. The interior ministry said that eight people had been killed in the violence.

I weep for this people. It will take decades for normalcy to return to that country. They had a dictator and revolted; now they have a democratically elected leader they are revolting and inadvertently inviting dictatorship again. The guy has only spent one year and they expect him to magically fix the economy after years of uprising.
If the military takes over they are doomed

I believe we can learn from Egypt that violet revolution would not work, what we need is a systematic change and re-orientation of the citizens where leaders are held accountable to the resources of the public

So he is a democratically elected president, but the people of Egypt are rightly upset with morsi for increasin the influence of the Muslim brotherhood, who can be said to have links to terrorism, in his Government. Its just like Gej appointing Shekau to a cabinet seat or better still Shekau as the President appointing Kabiru sokoto and co as Ministers. I guess the Military would be religiously pissed talk less of the people, interesting to see how this scenario plays out in the end. Will the president be booted out? or will he call on the Muslim brotherhood for help thus leading to Civil war? grin grin grin

IMO Egypt is the only country practicing true democracy in Africa. That country is not a country where some few individuals take the masses on a ride by imposing anti-people policies. They demand what they want directly from the President and not through some corrupt Legislators or Governors. How i wish my beloved Nigeria can be like Egypt.

The Egyptian military has got to be the best in Africa, they actually care about the people. During the Mubarak revolution, they dropped their weapons and sides with the people.

This Morsi is an Islamic radical, Egypt went from the hands of a dictator to the hands of extremists (morse & his Muslim brotherhood)

Part of his manifesto was to make Jerusalem the capital of the Arab world.

What do Egyptians really want? If Mori is removed, I'm sure his supporters and Muslim Brotherhood will go back to Tahrir square to protest and ask the next leader to step down, they will continue running in circles. When Mubbarak was kicked out, they thought their problems were over, not knowing it was just the beginning of bigger problems. Dashed hopes.
Libya has not known peace since Gaddafi was killed, over 80,000 have died in Syria revolution/civil war, sectarian killing has become a 'tradition' since Saddan Hussein was hanged(although that was before the Arab spring).
This shows that revolution is not the answer after all. My fellow country men/women that are calling for revolution should please think twice.

Truly, The Arab spring has failed.
Re: Army Gives Egypt's President A 48-hour Notice by FOLYKAZE(m): 3:14pm On Jul 02, 2013
Muberak was a virtual dictator that ruled through fixed elections and banning oppostion for years and years.
The Egyptian people wanted freedom and overthrew him in 2011. The Muslim Brotherhood were part of that protest movement, and Morsi promised that if elected would bring about the changes the people were calling out for.

Instead he just pursued his own agenda and betrayed the principles of the revolution, and the people are back on the streets demanding that he leaves power and that their demands for more freedom and better rights and economy are met.

For example, the people wanted an end to Mubarek`s economic policies which didn`t benefit the majority of Egyptians, Morsi promised economic reform but instead carried on with Mubarek`s policies.

From mubarak to Morsi, who gon take the sit next?

It's been a long time coming. The army interference/intervention though... Hmmmmm. Morsi has had it rough since the very beginning of his tenure. Many lapses in judgement by a man who should know better. History taught him nothing. Poor, foolish man.
