FG Targets $10bn From National Flag Carrier by Nobody: 7:56am On Jul 04, 2013
The Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, weekend, stated that the federal government was targeting over $10 billion as revenue from the proposed National Flag Carrier in its long term strategic plan before 2026.

The Carrier, a ministry official confided in THISDAY, will roll out its operation before the end of the third quarter. One of the major objectives for the establishment of National Carrier which will be privately and professionally managed, Oduah averred, is to meet the country’s reciprocal obligations under Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) and increase revenue and commercial opportunities to Nigerians.

The minister made the disclosure in Abuja while taking her turn at the Ministerial Platform to unveil her ministry’s scorecard in the last two years. “This strategy is expected to create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs and to positively impact on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by up to $10 billion by 2026,” she said.

According to the minister, the National Carrier has become expedient, considering the massive upgrading and remodeling that is currently being undertaken by her ministry, adding that the National Carrier will have domestic, regional and intercontinental flights.”It will further complement the existing airlines operating in Nigeria,” she said.

“We expect the National Carrier to partner with Africa focused aircraft leasing businesses. It is expected this will result in Nigerian passenger numbers exceeding 25 million by 2018 and 30 million by 2032. The National Carrier, alongside the other existing Nigerian airlines will have access to newer, more affordable and suitable aircraft that can service the under-utilised airports.”

She expressed delight at the development of new terminals in the following locations of Akanu Ibiam International terminal, Enugu, Murtala Mohammed International terminal, Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe international terminal, Abuja, Port Harcourt terminal and Aminu Kano International terminal. The additional capacity through the expansion works, according to her, would handle over 18 million passengers with Lagos to cater for more than 45 per cent of the total passengers.

From citifmonline.com:

Elsewhere and Nigeria has now completed plans to float a new national carrier to be named Nigeria One.

Nigeria One will be formed through the amalgamation of the assets of all the domestic carriers that are heavily indebted to AMCON which include Chan Changi Airlines, Aero Contractors and Arik Air who both fly into Ghana.

AMCON took over Aero Contractors in September 2012 at the request of the Nigerian Central Bank over debts estimated to be USD200million.

Nigeria's last 100% state-owned carrier, Nigeria Airways collapsed in 2003 under a debt burden of more than USD 60million blamed mostly on mismanagement, corruption, and overstaffing.

She hasn't told us how the aviation fund disappeared into thin air.
Please Stella stay away from floating a new airline the country has more pressing needs.

There is no business venture that the Federal Government is running successfully. There is no way this will turn out successful. This is only an avenue to rob the rest of us.

Flag carrier is d airline which has the colour of the national flag of the country crested on the aeroplane's fuselage like the south african airways, kenyan airways, british airways, etc. National carrier is the airline adopted by a country to act as its nominal national carrier. Example includes delta airline for United states, former virgin Nigeria for Nigeria, arik air for sierra-leone, etc.

Note: national carrier does not have the national flag colour of its country crested or implanted on the body of the aeroplane.

Back to the topic, it seems this minister is suffering from diarrhea of the mouth. What modalities have been put in place for this eventual take over from these indebted airlines? How is the FG going to collapse the staff, aircrafts, building headquarters, and some strategic functions of these different airlines together?

I dnt think dats going to work in this year. Maybe next year tho

Government all over the world has NO business in BUSINESS. The government should motivate private sector to get into the industry. BIG SCAM I smell even though the minister and the Jonathan administration mean well. RELIGION AND TRIBALISM our best practices will destroy it. Our road network and other modes of transportation especially rail and sea are most urgent in terms of optimization of financial resources. ELECTRICITY/ energy is the MAIN driver of any economy and that requires emergency treatment.

why waste so much money on glorified 2015 campaign tool, why not invest this money in agriculture, provide food security and more for export. Create millions of employment opportunities in processing, farming and trade

The Aviation minister's plan is misplaced.

Icant believe this. At a time when we're trying to get the government out business by privatising,She is trying to get the inefficient governrmnt into business by this national carrier thing. This is the joke of the year.

What happened to Nigeria Airways? Will this one not go the same way?
