@tellwisdom:if a woman's vagina is not relax enough to allow the leading part of the baby to pass through,in order not to cause ragged tear to the vagina, episiotomy may be given. However if the vagina is relax enough and capacious, episiotomy may not be needed.bottomline-not everybody deserves episiotomy.

Doc pls clarify which people in particular needs episotomy d most,is it those dat wer married a virgin and got pregnant immediately. Or is cs d best to go for.

mbakwe: Federal staff hospial jabi, abuja, cs = 70,000 + delivery cost =20,000, then be ready 2 pay 4 every other thing.
You know gwarimpa gen. Hospital is also very good. The bed is free all you do is to buy the items on the list given to you. From experience in gwarimpa gen. Hospital if you don't have your drugs then you are on your own. To purchase the items on the list is less than 12k, is called the cs kit.

Oga, just thank God. Childbirth can be easy and uncomplicated and when that is the case, even a husband can birth the baby no issues. The problem with Nigeria is when there are serious complications with the birth - our doctors in Nigeria don't seem able to grapple with these complications or our facilities are not up to scratch? I really don't know what it is. In the UK and US and other western countries, if you have your baby from 26 weeks - they will try to save your baby. I know two families that this happened to and their kids are very fine now but in Nigeria, a birth at 26 weeks - they won't bother trying to save the child. Why? They don't have the facilities to care for a baby that young. The prayer for everyone giving birth in Nigeria should be that their birth should be a straightforward one because when story enters, its only God and a very well trained doctor that can help. If the mother dies during childbirth in the UK, an inquiry is launched the same Jonathan launches inquiry into every small or big yawa in Nigeria. That way mistakes are learnt from, if it was due to negligence, then the people who are responsible are dealt with accordingly. It is not treated as yet another "God knows best case".

I am not being sentimental o, I lost my auntie to childbirth in Nigeria many years ago. Till today, I don't what caused it. Her kids have had to grow up without their mother and it is sad that many years on, it is still happening.
when we talk equipments, it has to do with the hospital, when we were at national hospital for my 1st baby, there was a baby in intensive care whom the mum gave birth to @ 25wks or so in nisr premier abuja(pardon my spelling) and was transferred to national cos of changes of survival after abt 2mths. The baby spent 4mths in national, in an incubator and at the end of it all. The grill is 2 now. So is not all about nigerian or SA.
When i tell pple that i love national hospital others will have smtin bad to say about it. one man's meat is another 's poison.

My mum said I came out with my buttocks and had the cord round my neck.my grand mum had to discharge her against medical advice when she was used as a specimen to teach student doctors.my mum delivered in the a private clinic where my grandmum handled the delivery without whahala.my younger brother weighed 5kg at birth and my loving grandmum handled the delivery without a tear.its unfortunate that she is old now she would have handled my delivery.

@OP, great topic. The lady has been on my mind since I heard the news of her passing. I had actually met her before and she seemed a pleasant lady.

I guess something that got me thinking about Ewar's case is why was she under general anaesthesia? I have never had CS but from what I understand, women are given an epidural which numbs the pain from waist down but the mother is aware throughout the procedure. I am just wondering why general anaesthesia was used in this case. Is this the norm in Nigeria? Can a doctor please explain why?

I have also heard that most Teaching Hospitals give all women episiotomy during delivery irrespective of circumstance. I have confirmed from a few doctor friends and it seems to be a standard process. Again, can a doctor explain why? While I was having my first child, the doctor was trying hard to make sure that I did not have a single tear and so it is quite hard to understand why the women are just cut anyway in Nigeria.

Whether we want to admit it or not, our healthcare is in shambles and I don't entirely blame the care givers. My family think I am OTT but I have informed that them even if I have a headache, they should not take me to a hospital in Nigeria. I have lost quite a few close people to negligence in that country. Truth is Ewar stood a good chance no matter her condition if she was elsewhere but Nigeria. Sad but the absolute truth.

As much as i agree with you guys that the Nigerian health care system is 'bad', believe me, it is not completely terrible. I can vouch for many Teaching hospitals and some private hospitals. And be rest assured, you will get the best of specialists and the best care possible in teaching hospitals.

Sometimes, it all boils down to choosing your 'health care centre' well and knowing and demanding for your right. If any health worker gives you shyt, give him or her shyt back.

^^^ not only in Nigeria is giving blood for birth a thing. It can depend on the person so I wouldn't be quick to blame it on nigeria.
Re: Your Experience During Childbirth In Nigeria by k4kenny(f): 11:03pm On Jul 06, 2013
You're right. Everybody is always quick to blame Nigeria for every small health issue. I once read an article in a UK newspaper where doctors took out a pregnant woman's ovaries in place of her appendice leading to death of both mother and child. I'll try to find the link. Let's not be too harsh on our doctors. Healthcare is really on the rise here.

The experiences here are pretty scary, giving birth is already a scary experience adding lack of equipment and nonchalant staff is almost a suicide recipe. Years ago my friend gave birth in a teaching hospital in PH, and the midwife was slapping her during labour when she was trying to push.

Hospitals in Nigeria are not that bad things will get better if mothers to be, will also do their part. Some pregnant women don't go for antenantal, they don't read books,no exercise, they eat junks or starve themselves, they don't ask questions, they just want to carry the pregnancy and give birth in a so called good hospitals.our medical personnel are not the best buh they are trying.some think Doctors don't know what to do when they advice to do CS,well they care about the safety of d mother & child that's why.and is not everyone that can afford those xpensive hospitals so we have to do more than choosing hospitals we should do enough preparation.

I gave birth to my first son in a private clinic, I so much appreciate d Matron because at every point in time, she would tell you d situation of things and tell you what to do, when I was in labour she told me the cervix is not yet wide enough for d baby to come through so by d time I really felt d baby down in my private part n I was shouting she just told me to keep Quiet dat I shouldn't shout dat when. I'm feeling d Labour pain I should just open my mouth n gasps for air, to God be the glory I entered d Labour room by 5:25 n by 5:35 I gave birth, she told me d doctor told her dat I av Fibroid I said yes, she said I need to camp dat she needs to use her hands to pack out d blood very well due to d fibriod thou it was. A bit painful, when she was about to stitch d place I was cut she told me so when she was stitching it by d time she got to d fleshy part of my private part she told me dat dis part is going to be painful so I prepared my heart for it. After d child birth my Bp was monitored every 2hrs so also was my sons temperature was monitored, his navel was also cleaned every 2hrs. There service at d clinic was supered.

I gave birth to my second Son a month ago at Ibadan, I gave birth in a new clinic along d new challenge Apata express way, the Hospital service is nothing to write about, I can never ask my Enemy to go to the hospital. My first problem with the hospital started when the doctor wanted to give anti tatanus injection which I explained to him that I've taken 3 doses out of d five doses and that I'm due for the next dose by Feb dis year, I was given d 4th dose by Feb n d Doctor was telling me dat I'm suppose to take another dose 2months later but I refused. My first Scan as at 16 weeks shows dat my baby is lying transverse so d Doctor saw it n was just threatening me dat it possible I go tru a CS section so since I av my first born Scan result at home I went tru it n I found out dat d baby was also lying transvere as at 16 weeks n by 32 weeks it has changed upside Down so I wasn't scared, by 39 weeks there was no sign of Labour n d Doctor was trying to Induce me so I explained to him dat my first pregnancy too was like dis dat there was no labour sign until I went tru Virginal Examination but d Doctor wnted to induced me which I refused n he finaly did the virginal Examination for me on 29th of may between10am n 11 am , by 8pm when my Husband was preparing for work d next day d labour sign was showing gradually by 8:30 I was on my way to d clinic. I got to d clinic n I was asked to go to d labour room, can u belive it dat while I was in Labour d doctor stil want to induced me, one of d nurses was giving me sign but I didn't get d message not until they brought d tins he wanted to use to induced me dat I now got d message so I told d doctor dat I don't wnt to be induced. I had a tear directly from my virginal to my Anus as I'm talking to u due to d Doctors negligence. D whole labour p pain n child birth was less dan 2hrs, I was Discharged before 12 noon d next day, d clinic does not have Electric boiler, stove nor cooker to Heat water, my baby was not properly examined it was when I got home dat I discoverd he had Jaundice. It was a terrible experience, I nid to call d nurses to check my Bp before it was checked,I also called a nurse attention to myself stomach pain n dat d bleeding is much all for d nurse to be complaining dat I didn't allow her to sleep.

I gave birth to my daughter in Zankli hosp Abuja and I must confess the care I received was superb. Went to work on monday bt decided to check my self since I was having slight headache. Met the doctor on his way out nd he didn't even object to givin me a checkup. He found out my BP was quite high nd proteins present in my urine. Was admitted immediately and induced. He placed me on drugs to reduce my bp. The nurses were nice and vigilant. Had my baby in less than 2 hours after labour kicks in (didn't knw I was in labour sef was waiting for the crazy pain) was monitored for two days before being discharged. I was told my type deliver their babies anytim anywhere so need to b in hospital once I feel anytin.

Thanks Doc. your contribution was objective. but please dont blame tropical conditions now. doc's who work under similar 'tropical' conditions in the west (australia, florida in d us, hawaii) still manage to be civil. nurses need to be taught their job does not include slapping, making snide remarks bout how i got preg or what my husband does for a living![/quote
]

thanks for your observation concerning my earlier post. I agree with you. A lot can still be achieved concerning healthcare in this country within the extant conditions and structure.

One thing must be said however and it is that we all have a role in determining the quality of healthcare we receive by taking our government to task.We must ask questions.

The majority of adverse outcomes in our hospitals are as a result of lack of equipment, consumables and personnel; not because the available doctors dont know anything as some people love to put it...the field of modern medicine is so vast no one single specialist can even work alone......

The hospitals abroad that people are running to are made what they are because they have adequate numbers of specialists and subspecialists!. All being served by cutting edge infrastructure and support staff who know their place in the scheme of things. The most annoying part of this aspect is that even our government officials are involved in this shameless medical tourism!

The great Mandela is receiving care in south africa. President Yaradua (late) was shamelessly been dragged around hospitals in Europe and middle east. We must make our own things work , else the next maternal mortality is just around the corner.

Wow! I think some medical personels should always remind themselves that a second of thier nonchalance can yield a divastating result!

My experienc was at garki hospital. They realy tried but not without some flaws and I will sugest U use a specialist/consultant to get a beter treatment

To start with the Dr that entered my medical details after the first lab tests made a mistake of writing O+ instead of B+(he kept complaining of hunger that early morning.lol), thank God I noticed it on my second visit ooo! During my antinetal visits, I kept asking questions ooo(like when is my nxt tatanus, antimalaria, scans and many oda ooo).

All my scan results wer not showing baby's weight even at 36wks! Those scan tech, gosh! it was at 36wks scan I ws complainin of pain on my navel when he was scaning and he said there's tiny fibroid there and added that "Havnt I mentioned it in your previous scans?" I shouted No!

fastforward to 39wks, My cervix had to be forced open and I had to be induced! At this point a consultant was on my case and personaly hand-took me to the tech for an elaborate and concrete scan(before the cervix opening). Infact he was there all thru asking all questions and directing the tech!

the proceedure stated in d evening and by morning my wate had broke and the induction process started. the matron that checked me about 2hrs later jst chckd how dilating I was and forgot to check my baby's heartbeat but she was praising me that I'm doing fine as its my first preg and am already 5cm dilated.

Luckily for me, about 5min later a female Dr on ward round came to check me and was almost leaving(because I was scared of that painful fingering and said matron just checked me!.lol) but said she must check the heartbeat befor leaving. And to our suprise it was difficult to get the heartbeat! the best she got was 80 meanwhile the last time was 140(or thereabout). She told her assisting Dr to try for the heartbeat and evryone kept trying. Before I knw it she was with consent for for my hubby and she wheald me to theater within seconds with oxygen on my nose which brought the heartbeat to 120. I got a great treatment from there and she didnt take chances! and within mins my baby was out alive!

Apart from some negligence they are good. In any hospital its best to just know what you should know at any time!

k4kenny: Ok, I'm d late comer here cheesy. Had both my babies here in Nigeria in d same hospital (R Jolad) and I must say their service was impeccable smiley.

With my first, I opted for elective CS cos of d baby's size and fear dey catch M̶̲̅ε̲̣ grin. Was awake throughout d 30mins surgery and I felt them bring my boy out. That first sound was priceless cheesy. Recovery was nasty, Dunno why naija doctors don't give strong pain killers. Just paracetamol :-{ . Thank God for quick recovery.

With my 2nd, during my antenatal, I repeatedely told them I didn't want another CS, they told M̶̲̅ε̲̣ to consider the possibility as my first baby wasn't 2 yrs at the time. They also told M̶̲̅ε̲̣ the couldn't induce labour as the internal scars were probably not healed.

When I finally went into labour on d 12th of january, they took M̶̲̅ε̲̣ into a private ward and administered an injection that wound soften my cervix. After 9 hours with only 3cm dilation, they decided to manually dilate d cervix with a water balloon thingy (dunno d name of d procedure), hurt like crazy. That took the dilation to 5cm, that's when I started to feel the REAL labour pains. They kept giving M̶̲̅ε̲̣ d injection to soften my cervix (each was more painful than d last) finally at 12.05 on d 13th of jan, I was finally fully dilated and ready to push. My lil princess arrived at 12.15am after a lil episiotomy.

The nurses and doctors were rily professional and encouraging M̶̲̅ε̲̣ all thru(even though I was beind a total diva grin). They respected my wishes of not wanting CS and did all they could when d cervix wasn't dilating even though they couldn't induce d labour
My naija experience wasn't bad o. Some hospitals here are really good, wonder why some heartless health practitioner would turn a joyous event to a tragedy cos of negligence.

Is this the R Jolad in Gbagada??

You need to stop reading a lot my dear. For you own good. I realised when I was preg than all things about pregnancy is not in our hands or even in the doctor's hands but in God's hand. Even the delivery, hand it all to God don't fill your mind with fear o. Having an open mind about the whole thing will also help you deal with the experience.

You'r right. They are still very good! I still prefer them to any other hospital in abuja(not teied zankli tho). They ensured my baby was monitored in neonatal clinic for a couple of days (because of the distress) and that gave me like two days time before I started breastfeeding. Just that they'v turned everywhere to vip and I pity the poor ppl.
