An Open Letter To Mr. President: Nigerians Abroad Are Ashamed, And It’s Your Fault Sir! By Raji Ridwan Adetunji
July 7, 2013 - 03:19 — siteadmin
By Raji Ridwan Adetunji
Mr. President, firstly I am not oblivious of the fact that there are various critical issues taking your attention at home, before bringing overseas’ plights to your fore. Secondly, I would not want to bore you with some irrelevant philosophical mumbo-jumbo. I will be concise in relaying the truism of my message by stating the difference between identity and image. Identity is philosophically opined as the perceptions about an individual personality that are mindfully constructed by the individual to the public. On the other hand, image is what the masses actually perceived about one’s personality. Sir, it is precariously demeaning to know that your very own country Nigeria has deplorably failed in offering the world a positive identity of herself and in securing positive images from the world views.
Take for instance Sir, here in Malaysia; an average Malaysian on the street of Kuala Lumpur believes every Nigerian is either “Keldai Dadah” (a drug dealer), a Scammer or a Gigolo. No matter how decent you look, regardless of how academically prolific you are and even if you are meeting in a religious platform, the sneer and fear of dealing with a bandit will obviously be sinuous in their looks when hobnobbing with you.
Nigerians have been painstakingly living with this stigma for years. Few innocent Nigerians have been brutally mobbed by Kuala Lumpur hoodlums in the quest of cleansing the smear on our national or their personal integrity. Some others find it easy to disown their nationality and will never want to have anything to do with their fellow Nigerians. It is also unfortunate that many a Nigerian has found tribalism, ethnocentrism or religious jingoism as a personal means of denouncing the sheer stigmatization.  The responses of such Nigerians when discussing the illegalities of their fellow Nigerians are galling and dangerously anecdotal. You will hear statements like: those Yahoo boys are from the West and South, or the drug dealers are mostly Igbo boys, while some will say gigolo is a Christian/Islamic thing, depending on their religious affiliation. Of course, you can’t blame their bewilderment.
Mr. President, it is not as if Malaysians are not aware of the scores of Nigerians in many public and genuine private universities over here that are doing the nation proud. It is not as if some of their petroleum and telecommunication companies and universities can do without the expertise provided by some Nigerian professionals. They also know that some Nigerians involve in legitimate businesses with an undeniable dividend on their economic development.
But still the Nigerian identity and image are not fascinating. The Malaysian communities have their reasons for being extraordinarily careful whenever the name Nigerian rings around them. It is probably because of the incessant broadcast they see on their national televisions of drug smuggling dramas often staged in their airport by Nigerians, or because of the stray Nigerian youths in their capital city, that are either graduates or school drop-outs perilously scamming and virtually pilfering their people of emotional and financial chattels.
Mr. President, I am not writing you this letter only because I have personally been a victim of the disgraceful consequence of these criminal and notorious Nigerians. I am writing to inform you that those Nigerians need your help. They need you to fulfill your promises in transforming the present catastrophic situation in every part of Nigeria. They need you in reshaping their future through a creation of economically peaceful environment where business idea thrives and excellence is rewarded.
Mr. President, you have done so well in repaying the cabals that got you the power and fulfilling the promises you made for your wife since you become the President of Nigeria. Please Sir, the position you hold today in Nigeria makes you the only succor that can turn things over for these hopeless Nigerians.
Many a time we watch these scammers and drug dealers on television, they often prefer accepting death penalties here rather than being deported back to their home country. Some of these lads are brilliant graduates now enrolling in English language classes just as means of getting visa and gaining survival with their own shameful endeavors. The creative skills they employ in plotting their terrible scams would tell you these youths are not dullards. They are potential productive resources for a serious nation to be exploited.
Whenever any well-meaning or concerned Nigerian engage them in discussion, they replied by saying it is the fault of the president. They realize the Nigerian government has made them urchins in their home-country. The government has exposed them to unbearable poverty, and in lieu of providing them with meaningful employment, they would rather be used as political ruffians.
Sir, the Nigerian shameful identity and image are the resultant of the anti-masses government you are heading and it your fault. Those youths –the leaders of tomorrow- have been disoriented, misguided and wrongly decided to resolve in actively staining and shattering the good names of the Nigerian people and robbing the stain on the entire populace.
Mr. President, if truly you are patriotic and you are really God fearing, you should start making progressive moves that will utterly change the devastating situation of the country. You should start taking the condition of youths more seriously than your own personal eating allowances. You should start restructuring the shambolic economic situations in Nigeria by creating employments, rather than self-praising yourself for inconspicuous achievements. Sir, if you do these for us we will never forget you like the South Africans and Ghanaians won’t forget their saviors. And if you decide to continue in your ways we shall never forget to include your name in the already long list of our draconian leaders and your self-centered predecessors.
On behalf of me and millions of utopian Nigerians, I pray may God help you in heeding to these suggestions and in bringing Nigeria to the promise land sir.

Hey dumbhead, everything is wrong with that useless article written by someone of your ilk. The problems with Nigeria didn't start with Gej but rather with your so called heroes and thank God for a visionary leader like Gej and his team who have been trying to right the wrongs of the past. Mr president never sent the never do well to go and waste away in Malaysia neither did he send them to go and push drugs occasioned by greed and materialism . Writing a useless article and trying to lay the blames of his failure on Gej won't sell. Before the coming of Gej, Nigeria was almost brought to her knees by the past leaderships and followers alike; playing the ostrich as if the problem of Nigeria is Gej is just pure stewpid!ty. In your little skewed mind, do you
think running away from the country and turning to an emergency social commentator will solve the problems of this nation? In Nigeria, I see a lot of opportunities waiting to be explored by any discerning and right thinking fellow. FYI, Gej was elected by majority of right thinking Nigerians and we are getting ready to re-elect him come 2015 and be ready to go and commit suicide cos you and your ilk can do nothing about it.

Sorry dear, loves traveling a lot but no place like home. Majority of our youths are out there due to ignorance, greed and materialistic tendencies(get rich or die trying). We are the ones that will develop this country and not spirits. Leaving outsiders to take over and control our economy will not augur well for this country. The quest to make it by all means and not believing in sheer hardwork especially among the youths can't be blamed on Gej but tis rather a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of the society which the foundation Gej is laying today is tackling head on. Playing the ostrich and not facing reality concerning the real issues affecting this country is just mere hypocricy. Not all Nigerians abroad are ashamed. those who choose to do the right thing shouldn't be ashamed.

Why will someone who has enough money to buy flight ticket choose to push drugs, if not for greed. he can farm with the flight ticket money and add value to the society, he chose drugs out of greed.

Why will someone who claim to be poor choose to scam someone else in another country if not for greed, there are poor people all over the world, being poor is not limited to Nigerians, but why are Nigerians thinking that scamming others is the best way out of poverty.

The US is just coming out of recession, the poor in the US who suffered the brunt of the recession did not choose to scam others because they were poor.

Greece is currently in recession, many other countries in Europe are having a tough time currently, the youths of those countries have not just realised that the way out of their problems is to scam others or to push drugs.

Something is inherently wrong with the way Nigerians reason. Two wrongs can never make a right, even if the Government policies are wrong, that does not justify going into crime and soiling the image of the nation.

FYI, in the country where I reside, Nigerians are revered because majority of us here are professionals, from the Supermarket to the car salesman, from the local Policeman to shopping mall attendant, Nigerians here are respected by all. That's only because we are few and respected Nigerian professionals in here.

God bless you. Tis sickening seeing able bodied men going the wrong way and at the end of the day, not taking responsibility but looking for who to blame. Every right thinking Nigerian knows the task of nation building is not easy but dedication and hardwork we will get there and that task starts from our individual families

Am sure those your youths seeking greener pastures abroad include my friend Micheal who left a well paying job of a physiotherapist at a Federal Medical Centre in 2004 to travel to the US? Micheal has not been home ever since, the house construction he started while in Nigeria has been abandoned, his parents who were feeding off him are now almost going to bed hungry because their son thought the grass is greener outside Nigeria. I have a colleauge on a salary of more than N300000 a month who will give everything to travel outside Nigeria. Ask him why and his answer is that he just loves being outside. Just two months ago, a brother and friend sold off his boutique business (needless to say he was doing well) to travel to this same Malaysia despite all advice not to do so.

So you see dear friend most of tthose youths are not there cos of lack of opportunities back home but for vain glory (just to be called abroadian). When you check how much these guys spend getting their visas and tickets, you begin to wonder if that money cannot be properly invested here at home.

So blaming GEJ for people‘s greed and insatiable lust for wealth won‘t cut it with me. We agree the business/investment climate here is not what it should be, but people nonetheless are making it, so all those criminals in Malaysia should come back home and find something to do.

i dont blive u. We see some of our youth everyday going abroad to come back to make an impact although not all. But i know af a lot of people schooling in universities abroad in other to compete with their counterparts worlwide by going for qualitative education which cannot be seen in our universities as you know the rating of the best university in nigeria worldwide and as u may also know a close friend of mine wanted to further his education to masters and if possible phd. Level but couldnt in the u.s because of his unrecognised bsc. Certificate xcept if he his ready to pay for it. This is too bad. Are u now blaming the youths for the consistent strike occuring in our educational system. My father is a lecturer in one of the unversities in nigeria and i can tell u to do his phd. Here in Nigeria took him 7-9 yrs. While his couterparts who have gone abroad to do their have come back occupying better positions. I also think u would blame that on our youths, abi! Lets face the truth d govt. Has performed below d xpectation of every Nigerian. And d people who are satisfied with it are people who have benefited from it. Like my mum would say. Do u know how many people bcame wealthy during IBB's tenure yet he was the one that made this country dis corrupt and he walks freely on the street. We are all hypocrites pretending all is well while we dont want to face the fact that we nid a turn around in the leadership of dis country.

ogb5: Not all Nigerians abroad are ashamed. those who choose to do the right thing shouldn't be ashamed.

Maybe only if you are not human, not Nigerian, feels no affinity or oblivious to common human feelings and sensibilities.

And basing all your analogies on other countries with different realities and experience betrayed your write up to the core..

al in all the truth is this . We all have to paly a part in d development of dis gr8 country from the president to the youuth down to everyone who is from Nigeria. Or who is a Nigerian. But there should b a platform for this to take place and its only the leadership of dis country that can build that platform for other stakeholders to come and build on the good foundation the leaders have built. Rmb during Awolowo's time when cocoa was the major xport. Then no political or office holder dare eats cocoa money because even the leader is commited to sustain the country from falling or found wanting as a result of inefficiency resulting from corruption in the production or sales of cocoa. So d day Gej decides to fight corruption let him start from his house and then his cabinet showing his commitment to Nigeria by reducing overhead cost and cost of governing d country. And then the people under his cabinet will bcome discipline down to the grassroot. Then a change would be inevitable.

In my submission, there is one common denominator, that is we are all humans. If the poor in the US in the height of their recession did not see the need to scam others to solve his financial problem, I see you reason why the Nigerian poor should seek to scam others because he is poor. The only reason for that is greed, not poverty.

If those currently having a hard time in Europe currently due to recession are not pushing hard drugs, why should a Nigerian who has access to flight ticket and Visa use his effort to push drugs? if not for greed.

The president can not cure individual greed

There are problems in Nigeria, just that the problem in Nigeria shouldn't make people to go out of the country to soil the country's reputation.
The Nigerians who go out and do legitimate business or study do not bring shame to the country, it is those who go and commit crimes abroad that bring shame to us.

That character of committing crimes abroad is what we should condemn.

ASSUMING all these bleeping were making little sense, does that justify a Yoruba drug pusher in Malaysia to be blaming the president for a bad image that Nigerians have had for a long time?

You rant like a spoilt teenager with a very troubled childhood so no need to respond to your rubbish blabberings but be rest assured that every right thinking person can not be blaming President Jonathan as your Yoruba brother just did, it is such a shameful act. Unfortunately, you're a fellow wasted life like him else you'd have been condemning the public show of shame of a fellow Yoruba person.

Have you tried cyanide capsule for your schizophrenia?

Stupid people.. it's the president's fault that you idioots will rather die for kpali in another nation than fight for change in your nation? HAHAHAHAHAHHAA The title alone makes the whole nonsense not worth reading.. WTF?

I'm sure it's some 60s baby talking lol.. Old demented ppl wey no gree stand up to protect their future(us) when the generation before them handed them a Nigeria ready for the world even with it's imperfections. A nation that fought a 4 years civil war without borrowing a dime.

Now these eediots are here to talk nonsense..

I am not going to sit back and read this shit! Too long with many paths. I am sure the writer could have made a better point without sounding too academic.

In 2012 Nigeria received over $85 billion in foreign investment. The Purchasing Power of Nigerians has continued to rise from $291 billion in 2005 to $451 billion in 2012.
Numbers don't lie!
We must admit that things are improving greatly.
Nigerians in America are the top performing students.
They are the majority of health care professionals when you base it on ethnicity.
Slowly things are improving and when we continue to applaud the victories and focus on the achievements we will prove we are equal to the task!
Leaders are a reflection of the people

The bad seeds are few in Nigeria and the great ones outnumber them by far!
