@reid
maya just best suits d way i reason, d choice isnt based on technical superiority.

All 3d apps achieve d same tasks via different means, mayas approach just works best for me.

Its an individualistic choice, tho im open to trying new things...i dont get swayed by popular opinion. Dont switch cos ur friends r telling u 2, switch for personal comfort.

Actually there r more max users than maya, n theres beta support for max too.

@shady
again nice work.
I understand pressures n deadlines, so its impressive under d conditions.

If i had just 200 frames, id dedicate most of it to d more important elements.
In my opinion dat wld b d interaction between d fone n d xter.

Xperiments show dat d average person needs approx 3seconds to grasp a situation/concept, so if its too fast ur best effort/fx may b missed entirely.
I had to play in slo mo, to even notice d lovely smile on d xter before his exit.
U get? But like i said, great integration.

08023289217 (round d clock)
of course ill b glad to aid u in any way i can.

@shady
at first when i saw the ur clip with the white dude in the background i thought u got d whole thing from a tutorial.
Good 2 know u did d whole thing from scratch.

shadyshaz: @OKX

well i just finished the vfx professional course at escape studios and they only teach VFX and compositing by the industries best.
my tutor worked on films like 2012 , casino royale and skyfall to name a few. it was an 18week course and we were meant to submit a final project limited to 200 frames and only had 2weeks to work on it . Also everything had to be done from scratch, no downloads of any sort.

so this is what i did as the Technical director of the project.

CONCEPT
FOOTAGE
MODELLING (modelled all the internal bits of the iphone i have to say cuz i didnt get to show much of the inside unfortunatley)
UV LAYOUT & TEXTURING
CHARACTER SETUP & RIGGING
DYNAMICS & CLOTH (which i removed on the last day due to insufficient time)
CHARACTER ANIMATION
LIGHTING RENDERING & COMPOSITING

FOR THE CRITIQUE FROM OKX
time extension (explained 200frame limit)
follow thru on the arm (YEAH I SHOULD)

This shot was presented to 3 industry Directors to critique
2 were speechless and 1 said ooh i want to see more.
and God is my witness. its my best work to date i have to say.
And im not asking anyone i know i deserve the response i got at my presentation.
the studio recruit students from the course into the industry but i have decided to help my country instead.

FOR NOW,

I have big projects coming up and i need a team of 'nigerian' 3dartists i can train. so i would like to start a contest to discover nigerias best in a period of 3months and a few wud be picked to be trained free of charge.

OKX how can we chat properly i need more of your assistance.

will like to get involve. When x d competition comin up
Re: 3d Animators Corner by Nobody: 6:06am On Aug 14, 2013
Guyz critique this shot of my upcomin short.
Sincere criticisms plz.
I've to cut down d resolution cos of this forum's restrictions.

Re: 3d Animators Corner by cgniyi(m): 9:39am On Aug 14, 2013
@kazuna
honestly my only critique is the pic of Genevive in the background,lol.Her poster looks out of place
I'm very impressed with the texturing.The scene really look grimy. Maybe u could roughen the poster a bit(like the edges)

Was this all done in blender too?
Re: 3d Animators Corner by OKX(m): 11:07am On Aug 14, 2013
@kazuna
lookin good..well done.
my minor observation has to do wit ur shadows, if d fire is d only light source then d room is too brightly lit for d size of d fire.
also given d position of d fire, the shadows cast should be higher than d subjects casting them (cos d source is low)
d light cast by the fire seems to b directional rather than uniform (d light is not cast to d left of the fire)

a little bit more expressiveness in d fingers wld b nice.
would love to see a moving clip cos a frame may not capture d essence completely.

again, great stuff...where have y'all been hiding?
Re: 3d Animators Corner by shadyshaz(m): 1:37pm On Aug 14, 2013
@OKX yeah there were loads of constraints , no time to implement all animation principles .

@EVERYONE the competition has begun but its only for a length of 3 months. Im making posts and ads to capture all possible talented nigerian Artists. The competition is to discover Nigerian/African talents to form a Team of nigeria's best. The Winners will be offered training and a job on Nigeria's first world class animation series. Winners would be paid weekly according to job input.

So now for the HARD WORK. here are the rules

1.EVERYTHING MUST BE DONE FROM SCRATCH. FREE TO USE FAMOUS CONCEPTS/XTERS BUT MUST BE REMADE FROM SCRATCH
2.SCENE FILES SHOULD BE SENT ALONG WITH FINISHED VIDEOS FOR PROOF OF LEGITIMACY
3.300FRAMES MAX
4.IDENTIFY YOUR SKILLSET. we will require 2d character concept artists, 3d modellers , uv & texture artists , 3d animators (in which ever area of animation), Lighting & rendering artists, Motion graphics artists, and compositors. Or GENERALIST

please it is important to identify your skillset by your strong points. im not expecting to find professionals here im trying to MAKE professionals. so lets start work, give your best and lets see if the first line of nigerian 3d artists .

by the way for character concept artists i obviously only need images

START SENDING WORK IMMEDIATELY !.
Re: 3d Animators Corner by shadyshaz(m): 1:41pm On Aug 14, 2013
@smett about the workspace tell me what u can see and what exactly is black . can u see any buttons to click

Thanks man. I wonder where i left my Physics textbook, i totally wasn't thinkin when i'd d lights.
Thanks again for ur observation.
As for the hands, i'll try again as well.
Re: 3d Animators Corner by shadyshaz(m): 7:13pm On Aug 14, 2013
@Kazuna very good job, i think its got a very good feel to it. Dont remove the genny poster please. try and make it all look dirty and rugged. I was really impressed by the way you tried to make the scene look very dirty and shabby, the only thing i can add is always give your image sum sort of story to it.

Hi all,
i see you all are well grounded with network/animation rendering,
We run an Architectural/animation/ print outfit.
And we got some core i7 16G Ram (4nos) and sometime ago
we bought a BOXX "renderstation" not a workstation
and we've not been able to successfully setup a network render.
Is there anyone i can contact here to assist in setting up this network render?
Re: 3d Animators Corner by OKX(m): 2:36pm On Aug 17, 2013
@vivid
wot is ur render software?
do u have backburner installed?
Re: 3d Animators Corner by PeterReezer: 3:27pm On Aug 17, 2013
@vivid
which 3d software do you use first?
then which renderer do you use...is it vray, mentalray .

Hi, i'm back again wt my many ques....
I don't have enough Ram, i'm usin 1G, therefore i can't use a fluid simulator but i managed to shade a plane as water in thix pic.
Now my ques is ...is there a way to make a plane to displace another mesh?
Rather to rephrase, i want d boat to bob in the water while applying displacement waves on the water plane.
Hope thix question x not confusing.

Re: 3d Animators Corner by OKX(m): 1:49pm On Aug 20, 2013
@kazuna
nice render...lots of promise
wot software r u using? dat will help answer ur question.

if i had limited RAM, i cld approach it several ways in Maya.
i cld create a new blank scene with a simple box primitive as stand in for my boat (assuming the resolution of the scenes boat may drag my system)or a lo res equivalent of ur boat.
i wld then create a simple pond, and make the box a boat, using the 'make boat' command.(it creates a locator for the box)
i wld add fluid emitters (and animate if necessary) to get the bobbing motion i desire on the box.
with this simple setup, any system can handle d dynamics reasonably.

when i am satisfied with the motion, i wld bake the simulation on the locator governing the translation of the box.
i wld then delete everything in the scene (especially d fluid solvers)except the locator and save the scene.
in my original scene, i wld then import the locator scene, position d locator appropriately and then constrain my boat to it.
the boat now moves like the box did, so i indirectly transferred d dynamic effects of d pond thro d locator to my model.

this approach utilizes Maya, but the principle is universal.
use a simpler scene to create what u want n transfer the results to a complex one, after deleting the processor-intensive solver calculations.

let me know if this particular method works...its d simplest i know.

nice observations the shadow went directly at the back and the shadow is small for a cast produce by a low source light...even the brightness is too much for the small fire..
