The new MediaTek MT6592 octa-core chip leaked out just yesterday and now we already know that high-profile phone manufacturers including Sony, LG, ZTE, Huawei and Lenovo all got early samples and might make a smartphone with it.

MediaTek is a name that’s usually associated with affordable devices, but the new octa-core MT6592 chip with its processor running at 1.7GHz to 2GHz is allegedly crushing the benchmarks scoring over 30 000 points on AnTuTu, more than the Samsung Galaxy S4. This will definitely put it in a higher-end category. The chip will be a Cortex A7-based one and will be manufactured on a 28nm node, so that will definitely translate into good power efficiency.

Sony is one very likely candidate to use those sample chips for a real device. After all, we’ve already seen the Sony Xperia C get released for Asian markets and it also boasts a chip by MediaTek. Sony is the first manufacturer from the big brand names to adopt chips from MediaTek, traditionally known for their affordabililty.

So when could we expect such a device? Not exactly tomorrow - MT6592-based phones will only start appearing in the beginning of next year.

To all those putting down the Chinese OEMs for using budget chips hope you will equally diss Sony's upcoming budget offerings based on the Mediatek chipset.

For the lovers of good things this is great news as we will soon have octacore phones without breaking the bank.

Why even overclock the old cortex A7 to 2GHz undecided , isn't that a formula for battery drain?

Till there's a benchmark though, comments are kept.

Its not the old chip and for an octacore I'd say 2GHz is pretty OK. Leaked Antutu scores put it in the 30,000 range, pretty kool for a budget chip.

cortex A7 is old. That's like pentium era bruv shocked. And 2GHz is much. The benchmarks weren't leaked, they alleged it was that high. No visual confirmation yet. Fingers are crossed.

And it’s next year, who knows by then cortex A9 might become budget standard and with the coming of bay trail, it'll speed up the revolution

cool they should have use cortex a9

That is not correct the cortex A7 is a fairly new ARM product spec what you are referring to probably is the ARM V7 instruction set which has been around for a while.

Edit: there is an older ARM chip the ARM7, its not the same as the Cortex A7.

Anyways let's see how the performance goes when its officially released.

Better power efficiency on the A7. Octacore A9s will probably require too much power plus generate too much heat.

cortex A7 is the one used as the low performance part in the bigLittle architecture of the exynos octa, right?

Yes and it came out after the A8 and A9.

OKay. Was made to be a low power better performance version of A8 smiley my bad. 8 cores at 2GHz would be new though. Let's see how it goes.

Here's an ARM blurb on the A7:
The ARM Cortex™-A7 MPCore™ processor is the most efficient application processor ARM has ever developed and dramatically extends ARM’s low-power leadership in future entry level smart phones, tablets and other advanced mobile devices.
The architecture and feature set of the Cortex-A7 processor are identical to the Cortex-A15 processor, with differences in the Cortex-A7 processor's microarchitecture focused on providing optimum energy efficiency, enabling the two processors to operate in tandem in a big.LITTLE configuration to provide the ultimate combination of high-performance with ultra-low power consumption.

As a standalone processor, the Cortex-A7 will enable entry level smartphones at below $100 price point in the 2013-2014 timeframe that are equivalent to a $500 high-end smartphone in 2010. These entry-level smartphones will redefine connectivity and internet usage in the developing world.

If this sees the light, prices of phones will automatically drop and there will be no more antagonism towards the Chinko folks

Yeah, hopefully the stigma of the name Mediatek and budget will be washed off, then people can have great phones at lower price points without sacrificing quality. Win win for us!

Nice...the big names are getting attracted. More options for users. This chip should force prices down. That score is scary lol

I'm trying to imagine what the market would look like by then. I'm getting worked up already on which to pick. I'm still torn between the S1 and M3, now this news. Don't even know what to think about everything any more
