Tipton Mosque Blast Was 'terrorist Attack', Say Police by vedaxcool(m): 12:26pm On Jul 13, 2013
An explosion which left nails and debris strewn outside a mosque was "an act of terrorism", police have said.

The blast happened on a disused railway line near Binfield Street in Tipton in the West Midlands at about 13:00 BST.

A nearby shopkeeper said: "I did tell the police there to evacuate the area, please for god's sake - there were nails all over the place."

Counter terrorism officers were called in and the surrounding area was closed off for several hours.

Tipton Taliban' tag

The mosque is the central place of worship for Tipton's long-established Muslim community including three men from the area who were captured in Afghanistan in 2002 and taken to Guantanamo Bay.

Ruhal Ahmed, Asif Iqbal, both 22 at the time, and 26-year-old Shafiq Rasul were dubbed the "Tipton Taliban" and were held at the US camp in Cuba for two years.

Shopkeeper Sadarat Khan said he was coming out of a local chemist when he heard a "bomb blast".

"They [the police] didn't seem to be bothered too much... It took them about 40 minutes to evacuate the place," he said.

"People were terrified and very scared and shaken."

BBC reporters at the scene were told prayers at the mosque were usually held at 13:00, but had been moved back an hour because of Ramadan.

Resident Raja Khan was about 50m away when he heard the blast and said a device was found on a wall on the disused railway line at the back of the mosque.

He said: "A few kids came out shouting, 'bomb, bomb'. There were branches that came off trees all over the place."

He said he went to the mosque fearing there would be casualties.

"If it had been when prayers were going on there would've been 300 to 400 people there. There were about 22 to 25 people I think at the time.

"People are terrified for their kids, myself included."

Asst Ch Con Gareth Cann said whoever was responsible "wanted to cause serious harm".

"I can't say for sure it was directed at the mosque, but from what we've seen this seems to be the most likely option," he said.

Minor damage was caused to a window of a nearby house, he said.

A counter terrorism investigation has been started, the force confirmed.

It is understood the explosion centred on an embankment near a disused rail line running behind the mosque.

In a joint statement, the board of trustees and management committee of the Kanz Ul Iman Masjid mosque said: "We express our deep shock and utter dismay regarding the incident that has occurred this afternoon.

"On behalf of the local community, we condemn this senseless and mindless act. It's a blessing from God that thankfully no-one was injured in the blast.

'Day of funeral'

"We call for calm and strongly urge the community not to let this incident divide us and cause disharmony.

"We stand united, stand together in the aftermath of this mindless act."

Police lifted most of their cordons at about 21:00 BST but said Binfield Street was likely to remain closed overnight on Friday.

Officers gave bottles of water to residents with young children who gathered along Dudley Port in Tipton during the afternoon.

Local councillor Ian Jones said he was "very shocked" by what had happened.
He told BBC WM it could not "go unnoticed" that the incident happened on the same day of the funeral of Fusilier Lee Rigby, who was killed in Woolwich in May.

Councillor Syeda Amina Khatun said she was not aware of any previous attacks on the mosque.

"The whole estate has been blocked off. People are surprised that something like this has happened," she said.

West Midlands Police are still investigating an explosion which occurred near a mosque in Caldmore in Walsall last month.

About 150 people were evacuated from homes near the Aisha Mosque and Islamic Centre after a device was found in a nearby alley.

Mr Cann told the media there was nothing to suggest a link between this incident and what occurred in Tipton.

it wasn't fake....
a friend of mine stays in that neighbourhood and he sent me a text when the explosion went off.

apparently, the imam delayed the service by one hour otherwise many worshippers would have been killed. it happened yesterday - the soldier whose head was hacked off was being buried around the same time.

i suspect the EDL - they are the only ones capable of doing such a despicable thing.

I don't support terrorism but I guess it's payback time..

Muslim extremists need to know that they don't have the monopoly on violence. The world seems to be getting fed up with these Islam related bombings and killings.. In France, a woman was attacked for wearing a veil, kicked in the stomach until she lost her pregnancy.. Now the UK has stepped up to the plate since the killing of the soldier. Soon, Muslims will start to feel the pinch Christians have been feeling for so long..

For violence to stop, everybody has a role to play.. Until then, the law of Moses shall continue to be applied; (Ex. 21:24; Lev. 24:20; Deut. 19:21) regarding an “eye for an eye"

A bomb attack near a Sunni mosque in a southern neighbourhood of Baghdad has killed at least 13 people and wounded dozens more, Iraqi officials say.

The explosion in the Dora area of the capital reportedly hit worshippers gathering to pray after breaking their fast for Ramadan.

At least three people died in a separate attack at a funeral.

The blasts come a day after some 38 people were killed in a bombing in a cafe in the northern city of Kirkuk.

Customers were again reportedly marking the end of the day's fast at the time.

At least 32 people were injured in the blast near the Baghdad mosque on Saturday, according to hospital sources.

The bomb attack at the funeral north-east of Baghdad which killed three people also left another 10 wounded.

No group has said it carried out the bombings.

More than 2,500 Iraqis have died in violent attacks since April, according to UN figures released last week.

The recent surge in violence comes amid heightened tensions between Iraq's Sunni and Shia communities, and claims by the Sunnis that they are being marginalised by Prime Minister Nouri Maliki's Shia-led government.

You know the funny part? The retaliation is not being carried out by Christians.. Just patriots who have now perceived Islam as evil.

And just so you know, the Old Testament laws weren't abolished.. Matt 5: 17 New International Version (©2011)
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

You bigotted idiiot, it made a mere Nairaland's Front Page. Which headline do you mean exactly? Ewu

calm down.you are suppose to have basic sense. what i meant was the bombing was never the talk of the day in media houses. they just mentioned it like it was normal news, no outrage or a commando reaction from the prime minister since it was a terror attack. the story never trend on twitter. the AP guy on twitter has been recycling news about the bombing in iraq but not a single news about this incident

my point is this, if it was an attempted attack on a subway etc, it will hit nairaland front page 30mins after it news breaks out not a day after, the news will be recyled at every hour mark.

the attack was not carried out by Shia in Iraq, and also the attack in London was carried out by Christians or White British racists and anti-immigrant islamophobes.

in Iraq, the sunni salafist/Wahhabi extremists, and particularly the alqaeda elements, have attacked both Shia and Sunni mosques and civilians.they carry out alternate attacks on Shia and Sunni mosques so as to inflame a war between the two groups, forging a sense of retaliation.and they target Sunnis, especially mainstream Sunnis, who oppose the salafist/Wahhabi ideology of terror and killing the innocent;however attacks on the Shia who the salafists/Wahhabis consider worse than Christians/jews and as "heretics" are more as attacks in Pakistan and Iraq have claimed hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslim civilians.

Terrorism is terrorism. The attempt to deemphasize terrorists acts from certain individuals, groups or countries is not good for anyone.
