One of the half truths about West African traditional music is that string instruments were mainly played in the West African Sahara, Sahel and Upper Guinea (Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau and Conakry) while Forest regions and Sudanian savannah was mainly played drum and percussion instruments. Enter The Ghanaian Seprewa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHZW3cKBbGs Traditional Ghanaian (well Akan) music was actually more string instrument lead than percussion lead. This leads us to it's influence on Jamaican music. You see traditionally a lot of Jamaican folk music was also string instrument based as well. Enter Mento - Mento is a Jamaican Folk music that majorly predates the popular music genres of Ska (which is an adapted version of American Jazz and Old R&B), Rocksteady, Reggae etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mento http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20130811/ent/ent5.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6y5Q14l7mU |

Black Kenichi: I have heard of Mento but did not know a great deal about it. It sounds a bit like early Calypso. Jamaica use to make calypso in the early days. It's not just for small islanders! |

RandomAfricanAm: Great post! From further investigation it would seem that the more fast tempo, robust, Georgian/Alabamian Fife and Drum blues variant in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley sounds a lot more like it's Fulani Flute and Drum parent genre than does the slower, calmer, more bluesly, Northern Mississippi Hill Country variant. Have a listen at tracks #2 - #5. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/georgia-fife-and-drum-band-mn0000995150/songs More on Blues in the Lower Chattahoochee Valley http://www.southernspaces.org/2004/blues-lower-chattahoochee-valley |

How did the Island of Jamaica really get it's name. The History books tell us that the indigenous Arawak people name the island Xaymaca meaning Land of Wood and Water. But when I stumbled across this video it made me think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LruM6xpCRMI |
