How Yerima Dragged Senate Into Child Marriage Controversy by sukods55: 11:49am On Jul 27, 2013
Unarguably the most topical issue in the polity today is the belief by the Nigerian public that the Senate during its last week consideration of the report of its Committee on Constitution Review, passed a law legalising under age marriage in the country at the prompting of one of its members, Senator Ahmad Sani, the Yeriman Bakura and former governor of Zamfara State who few years back, married a 13-year old Egyptian girl at the National Mosque, Abuja.

Expectedly, the sensitivity of the issue at stake drew spontaneous reactions from Nigerians which had led to barrage of attacks on the Senate by concerned Nigerians across gender lines for allegedly being insensitive to the modern day necessity of training and educating the girl child for her to be both useful to herself and the society at adulthood which invariably means that for any girl child to be so trained and educated, she would not be less than 18years old before being given out in marriage as supported by Section 29, Sub section 4(a) of the 1999 Constitution which defines full age for any Nigerian to be 18 years and above.
