Rivers sends its destitute to home states, plans another

Some beggars in a NIgerian city

Nigeria’s Rivers state government has sent to their home states, some of the 113 beggars and lunatics removed from the streets of Port-Harcourt, the capital city. And the state has warned it will soon embark on another removal exercise.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr Mina Jamabo, said of the 113 beggars, destitute and lunatics removed from the streets, some had been taken to the state’s rehabilitation centres for treatment.

Jamabo said that non-indigenes had since been repatriated to their various states, while the indigenes would be treated by the government until they were fit to re-unite with their families.

Jambo did not give the figure of the destitute sent to their home states.

Mrs Stella Toby, Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation however unfurled government fresh plans to remove beggars and destitute from streets in the state.

She made the announcement in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Monday.

She said that beggars, destitute and mentally-ill people were constituting problems on some major streets and roads in the state.

Toby said the State Government had set up a special committee charged with the responsibility of restoring sanity on major areas of the state.

“Most of the beggars are from neighbouring states and I can assure you that they will be removed from the streets and repatriated back to their respective states,” she said.

A similar exercise by the Lagos State Government recently generated bad blood between Governor Raji Fashola and Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State. Fashola’s government had sent home 14 rehabilitated destitute to Onitsha in Anambra state.

Most of them around oil mill bus stop and Trans-Amadi slaughter are our brothers and sisters from bokoregion, but my worry is on those healthy ones who look like cooked crabs with shampoo hair like foul beaten by acid rain, they should be sent back to Niger Rep,because they may be potential Bokospecialists.

why can't nigeria be one? what is indigenes and non indigenes in the same country? i thought every nigerian has right to live in any part of the country of their choice, so why this repatration of non indigenes to their state? the one Fashola did has not settled, rivers followed. very soon, even normal people will be asked to go to their states. Another problem is on the way. GEJ shld act fast to stop this madness. many of us take citizenship of foreing countries but we are illegal allens in our own country.

The shame of a nation.Instead of taking care of them, they are displacing them more. And funny enough the same people(politicians) that hates the sight of beggars are the root cause of chronic inequality in nigeria as a result of unchecked looting of public funds.

You have a good point, but now we know that this policy has nothing to do with tribe.

I hope the moderators see fit to put this on the front page so that we can all have cooler heads.

The constutition states everyone is allowed to be anywhere in the country and this automatically includes you can beg anywhere in the country. So why deport? Are beggers from Rivers and Lagos only allowed to beg in their home states? So even begging has to involve this state of origin thing too?

while the rivers indigenes in other parts may be potential dey-bams and dey-wells.

this practise is wrong on all levels.its a violation of the fundamental rights of these people to move freely within their country.

Federal character for begging tinz! grin

From what I understand, the destitute and beggars that are picked up are allowed to stay, as long as they agree to be rehabilitated and learn a trade.

The ones that refuse are sent back to their home states.

It is also important to remember that begging/hawking is often illegal. The state has the right to jail these people, so it is better for them to go home and be free than wait 2 years for a trial.

Instead of advocating for breaking up Nigeria, why don't we advocate for better governance so that there are less beggars and destitutes?
