You sir, know of what you speak! Consider also the weight implications of a future RPG cage. You'll add minimum a 1.5 tons ,maybe 2 tons depending on the steel alloy used. You all do know these days everyone has the latest RPG including the 29 series;the RPG 7 shown here is considered obsolete even by the ragged mofos on our continent.

Just drop a 30cm thick log on the road, the ARA stops. No fancy things needed.

The Hilux will not be taken out of service. That's frankly impossible. Richer countries such as Mexico and Brazil deploy them in their own COIN/CTCOIN ops. Even Russia deploy Pick-ups in Syria.

However, with the new additions of MRAPs to the AOR, we expect to see a more acceptable ratio of MRAPs to Pick-ups.
Square pegs for round holes. Mexico and Brazil are not dealing with ied threats rather they got cartels and gangs. I'm implying that vehicles for carrying troops in the North East are adapted for their environment than Toyota. Anywhere else in Nigeria, Hilux are good and solid workhorses for the armed forces and security services. It'll be foolhardy to waste limited resources on replacing them when we don't need MRAPs for non mine related conflicts.

Even US. i saw a video of trucks transporting US equipments to Fareja few days ago. Pickup were among.
Well, as said by you, the Americans used it for equipment not ferrying troops.

That notwithstanding, they are in an active war zone were ambushes are frequent. Hence the term One Resistant Ambush Protected. MRAPs are not for mines only.

It is actually round pegs in round holes.

I agree that vehicles used in the NE should be adapted to the AOR, however these vehicles really don't fall from the sky. The cost implications of running purely armoured infantry vehicles for 6 years in the AO is not feasible. Even for richer countries such as Brazil and Mexico.

However, what i believe should be advocated is a decent mix of armoured vehicles to Pick-ups.

MRAPs provide good quality protection, but they are not invincible.

We have all seen that video of a Turkish army Kipri MRAP which was shredded to pieces by a PKK road side bomb. The video was released earlier this year i believe.

.

South Africa operated Casspirs, Buffels, Elands and Ratels in northern Namibia and Angola for over 20 years.... Stop with your rubbish of making up facts.

Just because you don't have the budget it doesn't mean others don't as well.

If mines/ied's are present in the AO then soft-skinned vehicles have no place outside of the wire.

Soft skinned vehicles are for use in safe areas or for use by irregular formations.

Acquiring a fleet of MRAP's for the N.E is well within Nigeria's means.

You aquired 23 Mamba MRAP's from us for a unit cost of 200K USD per unit. So, for 120mil USD you could have yourself a fleet of 600. I suspect the Bigfoot was significantly cheaper and the Chinese have the production capacity to deliver the lot rather quickly.

And then there is the fact that the Americans are trying to get rid of some 6000 MRAPs... With the British not far behind them

And this whole "Americans are using Toyota as well" in Syria talk.... Some people need to educate themselves a few things;

1. The US has a small contingency of operators in Syria, flying in the "MRAPs" requires the whole mechanical shop of logistics support which is not relevant because they're only providing CAS and specialised missions to allied forces... So the logic is to use what is easily available on the territory ie Toyotas.

2. Showing up in an Uncle Sam made MRAP while doing support makes you a special target for your enemy while you're mobile so just blend in as well just like with local vehicles.... A similar example would be when white South African soldiers ended up painting themselves black to avoid being selectively tagged during bush patrol ambushes.

Nooooo. Read my message again.

Trucks were carrying the American equipments. Which includes pickup trucks like our our Toyota.

Those pickup trucks also have chairs to carry troops.

They're for troops and nothing else.

I did not foster the illusion anywhere of MRAPs as a silver bullet for IED problems Henry.

The probability of running into an IED in the not desert = 0.00000001

That's a strongly unverified but correct probability...IEDs are not mines they are targeted munitions used in an offensive mode whilst it's relative the landmine is mostly a defensive munitions.

You get pressure-plate IED's these days

I watched a doccie about Royal Marines in Afghanistan and there were so many IED's in the area they were operating that they had basically zero mobility and the entire AO was essentially like something out of WW1. They also had ROE's that allowed them to shoot anyone they suspected of "spotting" for insurgents.

It took British Engineers ~2 months to clear one market place.

IED's are the new mine. You no longer need a wealthy foreign backer to seed the countryside with dormant death and completely eradicate your opponents mobility.

Exactly...mines were munitions of opportunity whilst IED are targeted. So the probability of seeing an IED in the wild is zero.

If its a choke-point and the enemy have the capacity to build a pressure-plate IED then it is just as likely.

Perhaps even more likely.

Toyota: Spare parts, cost, versality, agility and ease of repair.

Humvee: Only Allied countries or those in the good books of the US can use them and it is an opposite of everything the Toyota presents on the battlefield.
