Apart from South Africa and Thailand, no other country outside Sweden the manufacturer, has bought the Gripen in 20 years of SAAB marketing and all the overrated specs.

Who will pay $ 60 million like a fool to buy a Gripen that has obsolete 20 year old pulse doppler radar, no IRST, airframe built to last 50 years are breaking into pieces in Hungarian air force Gripen fleet withing 8 years, Gripen has had 11 crashes/accidents within 3 countries.

Only 40 Gripen C jets have been export sold-outright in 20 years, about 30 countries have done serious evaluations and refused to buy it.

No wonder it took 10 years global marketing and multi-million dollar bribe to get the first Gripen export sale to South Africa.

Nigeria should NEVER buy such aircraft for $ 60 million per unit ! Tell me what is inside that Gripen C that makes it great and worth that much?

Do me a favour and read your sources properly, MS20 upgrade has only just been released, so NO Gripen has been upgraded to that standard.

SAAF has yet to miss a software upgrade so don't be surprised when we receive the same upgrade after Sweden.

its meant to protect the plane from tilting in the back from too much weight loaded in the rear thus causing the tail section of the plane to make contact with ground. especially when passengers are disembarking in the rear door

The 98 recommendation was still to replace the 250 fighter aircraft we had that time with 50 advanced jets. which is what was done.

The SAAF as seen with project curver initially wanted a fighter in the class of the Eurofighter Typhoon or Rafale.

they simply had to balance the requirements.

Hawks are basically our Impala replacement, would be nice if SAAF could acquire 14 or so Gripen E/F to complement our current fleet.

Most impales where training only. Both SAAF and SAAB want a few gripen E/F for SA. It is money thing.

Wonder what the 2014 Defence Review states about the requirement for more airframes specifically fighter aircraft...anyway I think the Defence budget will get a reasonable increase this year thanks to the defence review, but I don't think it will be anything substantial, think the increases will mostly budget for transports for SAAF, and OPVs/IPVs for the navy as spesified in last years mid term budget.

Dont know if you can shed any light regarding budget increases and possible acquisitions seeing that your in the SANDF??
