ITbomb: Nigeria lacks the basic identical philosophy or ideal. It is each to himself, it depends on where you find yourself.
If you are in the north where one person has N1bn in his account and the neighbor next door is looking for a good spot to sit and beg then we have Communism , if you are in business then it is Capitalism, if you are in government where people flock around you for tips then it is Socialism.
And each of these live comfortably with each other.
hummmm

mr_king: First find out †ђξ meaning of both concept! Then choose which one you think is being practised in Nigeria! Back then in high school, I read we practice mixed economy! But from M̶̲̥̅γ̲̣̣̥ own point of view and observation as a Social scientist, Nigeria is a full blown CAPITALIST state! Fvck what ever any teacher or book says! In social science, there's no one defination of a concept! In most cases, we disagree to Agree! There's nothing like mixed economy!! Is either you're here or there!! Malaysia is a very good example of a Socialist state. There, †ђξ Government owns almost all †ђξ means of Production and services! †ђξ Government provides all you need to survive as a citizen of that country! A pauper can own a house, good car, good health, and all that! No room for exploitation and slavery! Which CAPITALISM is known for!!

The whitemen came up with those theories from their understandn and experience of what was happening in their home country, now in Nigeria our economic system doesn't fall into any of these classes, i tink its a challenge for our intellectuals to come up wit an economic theory dat can explain what is being practised here

Jarus: Actually, Nigeria is practising mixed economy, tilted more towards socialism (very large public sector) before, but now leaning more to capitalism.

Pre-IBB(pre-independence, thru first republic, Murtala, Buhari up to IBB): Mixed, tilting towards socialism

Post-IBB(esp Obj): Mixed, with greater capitalist bend).
. This is the most authentic response. All economies are basically mixed with a bias towards either socialism or capitalism. Presently due to the ongoing privatization policy as against the nationalisation policy of the 1970's and early 80's, our bias is towards capitalism.

is there really problem whn they mixed D two? Wht should be of concern is that D best are achieved frm it. Regulating capitalism helps alot to minimise it excess and exploitation. Nigeria will need a bit of capitalism as is seen in privitasation due to irregularities(corruption) of most govt owned enterprise. And a bit of socialism to curtail white houned livered explioters in service providers and manufacturers as in Canada and U.S.A.
Re: Is Nigeria Practising Socialism Or Capitalism? by owobokiri(m): 8:10pm On Aug 23, 2013
Do we have any economic model in place? We are at the tail end of the SAP induced ultra capitalism project of the CIA..., a process thaT started in this country around the middle 80s by the government of the evil genus himself. After indiginisations./privatisations/commercialisations and all other sions, we now have a small clique of astonishingly rich bourgeoisie who have used their connections in government to corner every important segment of the Nigerian economy. They come from almost all parts of the country although highly dominated by folks from the 2 regions that have ruled and dominated politics longer since 1970. . They will now start to dictate politics and will only allow candidates amenable to their interest to get into top political positions in the country. It is a lock down, people! . . Unconsciously/impulsively they will defend Nigeria with their immense wealth and will do everything to keep this country going since they have massive investments scattered all over the country. Within this class, ethnicity and tribalism dont matter that much (it has always been for the poor). The need to bond together in order to survive supersedes clannish thinking here. There are also retired and active Generals there so reformative coups may not happen anytime soon. They are the Dangotes, the Adenugas , the Otedolas etc. . It is a brand of capitalism that will ultimately enslave 99% of the population and tie their future to the whims and caprices of the domineering ogas at the top.. How long it will last will depend on how they manage to create enough jobs for the masses by leveraging their astonishing loot to invest more and keep the ordinary man busy. If they fail, and that is a possibility(in this days of intra class conflicts), then there is a good chance of an imlosion . Change can then come when the people decide that enough is enough..

Every sector in Nigeria smells capitalism!

FRAUD! Every sector SMELLS capitalism, but in reality, NIGERIA IS SOCIALIST STATE. Why? Government owns THE COMMANDING HEIGHT of the economy: THE OIL INDUSTRY. THE REFINERIES,etc. SOCIALISM being always a fraud, THE ROGUES that masquerade as servants of the masses, are in reality MORE EQUAL than the masses. They always allow the masses some measure of liberties that help sustain the socialist system, even in the defunct SOVIET UNION, Cuba, etc. Gen Danjuma owns oil well, not because he invests CAPITAL in oil & gas. No. The oil well is given to Gen Danjuma free of charge. Ditto Gen Yar'adua, and his agent, Abubakar Atiku. Frauds do not ever permit proper definition of terms. Government control of factors of production, through soldiers & civil servants, is nothing but socialism, that breeds as much corruption as in Russia. And PREVENTS HARD WORKING Nigerians from making petroleum products available, at competitive equilibrium price.

wirinet: I disagree with people that says we are practicing a mixed economy, we are sliding fast into absolute capitalism. The government has been selling all our collective assets to private individuals (cronies). The few assets left are the four refineries(which we are benefiting little from), NTA and FRCN, the airports, federal roads (some of which will be concessioned), the sea ports( heard some had been concessioned), the federal universities, polythechnics, and colleges of education (they have been commercialized), the newly revived railways, and a few others. Even the federal hospitals are being run like private concerns inspire of their high fees and poor services. So what social services is the government providing its citizens to have some semblance of socialism.

Erm....

Police
Firefighters
Free education (primary and secondary)

Now don't change goal post and talk about the rot in government or society.

Theoretically people think we practise mixed economy. But what we practise is dependent economy because all sectors of the economy depends on the west.I.e Capitalist west.
Re: Is Nigeria Practising Socialism Or Capitalism? by Aregs(m): 10:42pm On Dec 13, 2013
Why not Socialism?
A Socialist society is one which:
(1) Has overthrown capitalism.
(2)Everyone works together for the
benefits of the society,where in
individual goals are set aside for
common goals.
(3)Everyone has a stake in the
economy.
(4)Noone is having more than they
need at the detriment of other
members of the society.
(5)Education is compulsoryand free.
(6)There is a classless society.
{7)Leadership is all about serving the
people.
(coolCorruption is not allowed.
(9)Workers are protected and seen as
partners not slaves or wage earners.
(10)Fundamental human rights are
guaranteed.
All these can be made to happen, if
we unite and revolt againts every
exploitative instrument of
capitalism...
THE LEAST I WILL SACRIFICE TO
ACHIEVE THIS GREATER GOOD IS MY
LIFE!!!
