Amid the sweet smell of incense, worshippers at Mount of Christ Healing Church sprawled face-down on the floor, enraptured in intense prayer.

They asked God for good health, for a fertile womb, for a better job. They beat goat-skin drums and sang hymns in the African tongue of Yoruba, exalting in unison for eye, or salvation.

It is a word that comforts Love Anani, an American born of Nigerian parents.

"The closest I can get to Nigeria is coming to church every Sunday," said the 22-year-old Alief resident, who plays the conga drums for the church choir, replete with rattling gourds and the African talking drum. "When you go somewhere else, it doesn't have the same appeal."
