I may sound like an old school, but abbreviations should be discouraged on this thread. Teachers affect eternity, we can never tell where our influence may reach.

Abbreviations can be a red flag that may prevent an employer to invite one for an interview.

Let's take a cue from this. it will help and improve us.

Re: Strictly For Those Interested In Teaching Jobs by Nobody: 11:19pm On Sep 20, 2014
In many online forums the discussion on what
is an acceptable salary is always ongoing.
While inflation and other factors contribute to
a growing cost of living in Nigeria and other
parts of Africa salaries and wages
unfortunately do not always rise along.
In 2013 things do not look like they are
getting better in terms of cost of living. Things
like rent, food, rates (power, water) etc keep
increasing in cost.
Therefore the question arises, ”What is the
average amount the average starting Nigerian
worker can earn in 2013 for it to be an
acceptable salary given the prevailing
economic conditions?” What will be seen as an
average acceptable entry level salary across
telecom, oil and gas, services, education and
indeed all sectors for a worker to be able to
afford an acceptable standard of living? How
Many People Already Earn a Comfortable
Starting Salary in Nigeria?
We took the time to research and look into the
answer to the above questions. In compiling
our answers we interviewed several workers
(that can be classified as middle class or
average in income levels), scoured through
tons of online discussions on the issue and
conducted third party research.
While it may be difficult to claim a general
average salary that will be good enough for all
interests we explored and bring to you what
we have found to be a reasonable estimation
of what an average salary should be for
Nigerians in 2013. But the fact is that what
we put forward may be far from the reality on
ground!
To get a hang of what a suitable average
salary could be we first look at the basic costs
of living facing the average worker;
- Housing : For someone living in an
apartment that is just okay enough we
estimate a monthly cost of N12,000 –
N15,000
- Transportation : N10,000
- Feeding : depends on the number of
stomachs dependent on the entry level worker
but we estimate between 1 – 3 persons
depending on the worker for food daily. If cost
of feeding each person a day is average N400
(could be far higher of course if meals are
eaten out at restaurants) we arrive at N400
for each person per day maximum and
multiply that by 3 persons and by thirty to get
N36,000
- Welfare (clothing, entertainment etc): We can
assume N20,000 monthly will do for this
- Miscellaneous (to cover other wants, and
expenses that may need to be made including
savings): N50,000
The above (very generous estimations) give a
total N131, 000 on the extreme side for
average entry level salary all things being
equal, for the average Nigerian worker with at
least a Higher National Diploma.
The real situation
From our findings the average salary scale for
entry level workers (Degree/HND Holders) for
some popular sectors and the percentage of
the workforce they employ is as follows;
Oil & Gas (2%): N100, 000 – N140, 000
Telecom/IT (7%): N70, 000 – N110, 000
Banking & Financial Services (13%) – N50,
000 – N100, 000
Hospitality, Media, Services Sector (33%) –
N30, 000 – N60, 000
Others (55%) – N15, 000 – N45, 000
From the above we deduce that majority of
Nigerian workers at the entry level earn far
below what would pass as a highly acceptable
average salary given today’s economic
situation.

Givemejoy: Learn a thing or two from the write up below:

Despite this marching order given to us by our
client, we still went ahead to disqualify about ten percentage of the total application received. In our opinion, these applicants are not ready for employment at all. Their presentation was below any acceptable standard. Even secondary school students dare not present such documents and expect to pass WAEC examination! Those kinds of people will give us problem during the selection
process.

If we are to be very strict in following the laid down rules and regulations, we are not sure if we can get up to half of the two hundred applicants needed. This is a very sad development indeed. Yet people
complain of scarcity of job and the few jobs available, most graduates are either not qualified or ill prepared.

Let us be honest with ourselves, go back to your
documents sent to us and assess yourself based on the following indices:
*Did you follow the instruction to use a particular
caption as subject of your e-mail to us?
*Did you write a formal cover letter applying for the specific position we advertised or you just forwarded your CV to us as one of the numerous.organisations you did similar thing to? Is your CV comprehensive and presentable – devoid of typographical
errors?

From the documents sent to us, are you sure.you are qualified for the post you applied for based on the requirements specified in the advert? Mind
you, we are not university; we want people who can be shown a process within few days and are independent thereafter.
Do you think you can pass our science-based
aptitude test if you are asked
to take it?

For instance, many did not follow a simple
instruction on how to reply us – USE THE TITLE OF OUR ADVERT AS SUBJECT OF YOUR MAIL. Some sent applications not meant for us, while some wrote long epistles as cover letter which we are not
prepared to read. Phone numbers were missing
in the CV of some and we observed a lot of typographical errors such as.spelling, the use of small letters where capital letters should have been used.e.t.c. If we are to do the right thing, no matter how good you are, we should have disqualified you from onset once you fail to follow our rules.

You can see what we are passing through as Consultants dealing with “graduates” not primary school pupils. You can equally see why so many.graduates apply for job and did not get reply! Mind you, we have not seen your face to see whether you are fine. Neither had you spoken to us to know whether you speak good English. The only thing we.rely upon at this stage to assess you is the.quality of your presentation. Your cover letter and CV represent you in our bid to access you. Once these are not well prepared, it’s like presenting yourself in.a rag before a panel.

Your document is like product package (label, carton,.packet, wrapper etc). If the package is not attractive to the eye, nobody will.care to pick it from the shelf even if the product is found to be good. For instance, the packaging of ORIJIN bitter.drink from Guinness is too attractive to be.ignored; yet the product itself might be worse than others in that category.
