ASUU Strike: Union Warns Maku To Stop Making Unguarded Comments by Memyselfu2009(m): 8:27am On Sep 10, 2013
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has condemned a recent statement credited to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on the ongoing strike.

Maku had stated that Nigeria may shut down if the Federal Government accepts the demands of the striking lecturers as so much may leave government coffers.

The union in a statement by Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, Dr. Charles Ononuju, described the Minister’s statement as irresponsible and careless, adding that his position on the matter shows he was ignorant of the agreement between it and the government.

While calling on Nigerians to ignore Maku, ASUU advised him to desist from making unguarded comments that could worsen the situation.

ASUU said: “Nigerians should ignore the careless utterance by the Minister of Information that the country will shut down if ASUU’s demand is met. It seems the minister has not seen or read the 2009 ASUU/FG agreement.

“The country has not shut down with constant government wastages and billions of dollars being stolen.

“The minister should apologise to Nigerians for such unguarded comments and stop playing politics with the future of Nigerian child,” it warned.

ASUU had embarked on the current action early July, following the inability of the government to implement the 2009 agreement reached by both parties.
