Why Do Nigerian Players Born Abroad Refuse To Represent Nigeria? by Ikenna94: 10:19pm On Sep 12, 2013
It is a known Fact that many football players of Nigerian origin have been refusing the opportunity to play for Nigeria, whereas they will even beg to play for Foreign Countries for free.

The Likes of Gabby Agbonlahor, Dennis Aogo, Carlton Okorie Cole, David Alaba, Patrick Owomoyela, Sydney Sam, Ross Barkley, Nathan Delfuenso, Ikechi Anya, Nedum Onuoha, and Leon Balogun are few examples of the players that turned down what should have been a Great Priviledge to Represent their Country of Birth ie the Fatherland.

This has led to so many suggestions and insinuations blaming the Coaches and The NFF for these unpatriotic decisions of our Country men in diaspora.the following reasons are Why these Nigerians irrespective of their colour refuse to line up in The Green and White of Nigeria.

1.They have no regard for their Fatherland: this is caused by the impression that Africa is not worth associating ones self with forgeting the fact that without Africa(Nigeria)they will not be on the earth playing Football.

2.The Mess That Nff brought us into:for the past 7 years Nigerian football has been brought into ridicule by the inefficient and Wayward football administrators.this led to Fifa nearly suspending Nigeria Twice all as a result of the disgraceful Dance the Past Nff heads have been dancing. Stories of Mismanagement of Funds, bad planning and In-house Scuffles have been the order of the day in these past years. Thus no normal foreign based player would like to represent Nigeria except a true Patriot Like Victor Moses.things got so bad that the Nff could not pay for better stadiums to host our friendly matches except for the Mk dons stadium used by a league 2 club in England.

3. The poor performance of the super eagles before Stephen Keshi took over: Every right thinking player will die to play for the present German and Brazilian teams because of their performances and likeliness to achieve great things. This particular problem can easily be solved by the Super Eagles posting a great performance in Next Year's world cup .

For now we can atleast make use of our present crop of Players.

Don't blame the NFF unneccesarily. Why should Alaba play for Nigeria? He has never been to Nigeria. His mother is Filipino. He has spent his whole life in Austria/Germany. He probably doesn't feel Nigerian.

Oh Lord thank you for hardening the heart of almost all the players the OP listed not to play for Nigeria i.e Carlton Cole and his likes in diaspora if not by now the Super Eagles would've lost his wings to some senseless players all in the name that they were born abroad.

Its not just in Nigeria, its common in othere countries. Ok for example even the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, many players that were born in one country but chose to represent another. In many cases they are coming from former colonies, a situation quite common in the French team that won their only world title with the precious help of players born in former French territories.
Would “Les Bleus”(france) have been so successful with great African players like Zinedine Zidane (Algeria), Patrick Vieira (Senegal) or Marcel Desailly (Ghana), Caribbean Islands reinforcements like Lilian Thuram and Thierry Henry (Guadalupe) or Christian Karembeu (New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean) as well as Robert Pires (Portugal) David Trezeguet (Argentina), Youri Djorkaeff and Alain Boghossian both from Armenia? It looked more like a World XI team that brought the World Cup and European Championships trophy home, to France. Michele Platini one of the best French players of all time was Italian too. So fellas its not just naija.thank you all. Train stop me here abeg. Thanks to jonathan.more than 8yrs now train never run for ph.

True you should not play for Nigeria if (a) you cannot speak pidgin English; or (b) you have never eaten fufu or garri; or (c)never spent the naira in Nigeria

@ op. your number 1 reason doesn't make sense, must a child take care of their parent because they gave birth to them only?
a parent that abandoned their child can not and never be respected by the children. so players should not play for a country that refuse to support their dreams.

few examples of the players that turned down what should have been a Great Priviledge to Represent their Country of Birth ie the Fatherland.

country of birth?

some of them have not been approach- we only hear they are eleigible to play for Nigeria,

secondly some have a progression poathway- Barkley played U-16, U-17, U-19, U-21 for England, there was no mention of him by the NFF until he's being mention for the full national team

- Culture, NFF/Coach want players they can control- they want people they can point out as 'Na me make am star ooo' they like to have their boy boy hence wont tolerate anyone who's not been recommended by oga from the block

- Choice! some people dont actually want to play for their country- they are comfortable without the hassle!!
