It was a show of shame at the premises of the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court when a 68-year old lawyer, Chief Lanre Adeniyi, physically assaulted a counsel, Barrister Keshi Elvis over a rent dispute.

Barrister Keshi was in court to defend some tenants who were allegedly ejected from their houses illegally by Chief Adeniyi but was shocked when the landlord turned the court premises into a boxing ring.

Chief Adeniyi had sometime in May 2008, in company of some miscreants, forcefully ejected tenants living in his house at Agege without serving them notice to quit.

He was alleged to have illegally entered their apartments and threw out their properties.

The matter was initially reported at the Elere Police Station in Agege but Chief Adeniyi quickly filed a motion against some of the ejected tenants and his caretaker.

At the hearing of the matter, lawyer to the tenants, Mr. Keshi, raised a preliminary objection to the motion and the presiding magistrate appropriately adjourned the matter till another date.

A mild drama, however, ensued immediately the matter was adjourned when Chief Adeniyi grabbed his tenants’ lawyer by the throat, threatening to deal with him ruthlessly.

Several times, he tried to punch him in the face but missed by an inch as Mr. Keshi dogged the blows.

Some lawyers who were at the scene of the incident tried to pacify Chief Adeniyi but he refused, insisting on teaching Mr. Keshi a lesson for daring to challenge him in court.

At a stage during the embarrassing incident, Chief Adeniyi held Mr. Keshi by his tie, dragging him round the court premises.

It took the intervention of some senior members of the bar and law enforcement officials before the situation was brought under control.

Investigations revealed further that police had already prepared a charge of stealing, forceful entry and assault against Chief Adeniyi.

Although, he has not been officially arraigned before the court, police sources informed P.M.News that the charges against Chief Adeniyi were ready and would soon be filed in the court.

Meanwhile, Mr. Keshi has threatened to petition the disciplinary committee of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) over the incident.

The presiding magistrate should have sent the supposed Chief/lawyer to 22 years imprisonment. That is enough evidence.
