[size=18pt]Travellers lament Enugu’s dirty environment[/size]

Travellers at the Enugu International Airport have lamented that Enugu State is too dirty and unbefitting to host an international airport.

Some residents of the city also criticised the state government over its inability to keep the city clean despite their persistent pleas.

They told The PUNCH in an interview on Tuesday that the state was getting dirtier by the day and that there was nothing in sight to show that the Governor Sullivan Chime-led administration was ready to remedy the situation.

An Ethiopian-bound traveller, Mrs. Yemisi Dantex, said, “While hovering on air, the impression that comes to one’s mind is a city of sanity, cleanliness and serenity, but as soon as you land, you become overwhelmed with the overgrown grasses surrounding the airport.

“As if that is not enough, as you drive from the airport through Emene enroute Abakpa, what you see are heaps of dustbins spreading through the streets; many insane people and destitute hover for the craps they could get from the bin.”

She said the officials of the Enugu State Waste Environmental Agency were not effective, saying, “Whenever they come to even clear the rubbish, they don’t clear it well; they rather spread it all over the place.”

She added, “In most cases, these ESWAMA officials allow the waste to drop from their trucks, thereby making the whole city dirty and smelling.”

Another traveller, Mr. Christian Diru, who had just returned from London, said that it was unfortunate that Enugu State was now looking as dirty as it was before 2009 when Nigeria hosted the Under-17 World Cup.

He said, “Enugu State was one of the states selected to host the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 2009 and we knew what the government did then to ensure the state was clean and fit to host the world. But all that seems to be history, as Enugu State is now as dirty as Aba in Abia State.”

According to Diru, “Enugu State remained clean until September last year (2012) when the state government lost focus due to Chime’s absence and since then, they have found it difficult to get back their groove.”

Diru, who shuttles between London and Enugu, added, “If the state government does not start now to correct this, then it would have no legacy to leave for the people by 2015.”

A resident on the Presidential Road, Madam Hannah Anike, alleged that those who should be keeping the state clean were the same people making it dirty.

Anike, who is 81 years old, also claimed the state waste management company had no good trucks; “so the waste keeps dropping on the streets of Enugu and the whole place is getting too dirty.”

Officials from the Enugu State Government House refused to react to the matter, and referred our correspondent to the Commissioner of Environment, Dr. Nnaemeka Chukwu-Oneh.

Chukwu-Oneh, however, could not be reached on his mobile telephone.

Officials of the ESWAMA also prevented our correspondent from seeing the agency’s Managing Director, Mr. Dominic Okonkwo.

This is really a shame, I am surprised that the state govt knew ahead of time that enugu will soon start hosting international flights, and did nothing to improve the environment. Seems like the govt in both state and. Federal are all interested in 2015. In anambra obi is worried about zonning to anambra north, in enugu they are about zoning to nsuka. Forgeting the present.

This is very embarrassing, and the govt should be ashamed and fire who ever is incharge of environmental sanitation.

Stop blaming NL'ers for what is in the newspaper.

The report is not entirely false. ESWAMA has not been living up to expectation, especially in recent months. I think state govts should find a way of getting reputable private companies involved in the task of refuse disposal in major cities. This should be done as a business, not social service. ESWAMA should be scrapped or made a regulator of private refuse disposal companies.

I thought i heard Enugu State is the cleanest state in the SE? How come the dirts? Too bad!

Now let's see if this makes front page. But with 2/3 of the politics mods being Igbo, and one of them constantly posting on the 'Enugu is the pride of the east" thread, I doubt they will recommend it to Seun. Sentiments are too strong when it comes to our mods and the SE.

Apt response bros! This article is more than 2 weeks old, and one has to wonder as to the nature of his intentions in posting it now if not badbelle!

Just before the airport was elevated, a kangaroo viability analysis sprung up from nowhere. The analysis has since been put to the dust bin with the impressive passenger turn out. Next u hear the news "Enugu Airport records first cocaine trafficking case....bla bla bla" They were reminded that this has been a daily occurrence at MMA. Now they've come up with this thrash that sounds like "Unfriendly bush rats seen along Enugu airport road.

Una no dey tire ni?? Even withches and wizards don give up on the wave of continuous fresh air blowing across the East.

Enugu Int. Airport is now an International Airport and there is nothing the evil, wicked and dark souls will do about it. They thought planes will not fly, but now not only are planes flying but more planes are queuing to come.
Now Enugu is dirty abi, later they will say Enugu has red sand. But, more planes will continue to fly. We prefer Enugu Airport which is closer to Edo State, instead of Lagos (some people IGR depleting) hahahaha.
