Hey guys, i know this may be out of the way,

i would like to go for one of the energy/petroleum courses at uni of aberdeen. Someone tells me i would really find it difficult to get a job there since i have no previous working experience. How true is this?

I'm confused cos I thought it should be easy since its aberdeen (oil and gas capital of europe).

Pls i need advice.

You are more likely to get a role with an SME in the sector which would not pay as highly. Although if you get very high grades, nothing can hold you down in taking a pick of who you want to work for, experience or no experience.

if I study accounting and finance at unilag, will it be easy to get a job in the banking sector since Lagos is the commercial nerve center of nigeria?

please note, you will be competing with about 5000 national and international students from universities in Scotland churning out graduates interested in the lucrative sector. It is very competitive- not easy and not difficult

I dont think the oil and gas sector employ thousands of new graduates in a financial year, and 5000 is just an estimate of the number of student coming out of scottish university not UK with an oil and gas related degree. all in all nothing is impossible just want people to realise nothing is almost automatic

SAGAMITE,

I can see that HERIOT WATT and ROBERT GORDON UNIVERSITY are not well ranked Globally. Is this jist about them one of the Top Schools for Oil and Gas employers anything to take seriously enough to consider them at all. Because I can see that even their prices for these courses are quite high (above E14,500), and I believe the price a university charges is directly related to the quality it offers. Kindly help me clear the issue on this.

I want to know if I should starve myself more for any of those two or just settle for Newcastle or Aberdeen.

Thanks.
Re: Best School For Masters Degree In The UK? by Sagamite(m): 2:07pm On Jul 11, 2008
Hi Ehido,

They are definitely worth considering for oil and gas related degrees AS LONG AS you are focussed on going into that sector after your studies.

They have both built a strong and respectable department to satisfy that field (Robert Gordon more so) and companies in that industry would be happy to recruit people that attend these universities. That is reflected in the course fees.

The downside for Robert Gordon is that it is not a particularly good university overall (considering all departments).

It is like University of Sokoto (Usman Dan Fodio) might not be a good university overall but it has a strong reputation in agricultural subjects and its department of agriculture might be a leading one in West Africa.

Heriot Watt and Aberdeen are above average universities in overall terms (Aberdeen would be marginally superior overall and also better for oil and gas). Heriot Watt also has a decent reputation in Business courses, I have seen a few of their graduates surprisingly showing an unexpected decent presence in top jobs in finance.

Newcastle is a top university in overall terms and most likely the best of the lot to attend if you have not made up your mind what industry you would work in when you graduate.

Hello Sagamite, i find this thread very informative but i need some good advice.

I just recently graduated from UNIBEN and i studied Chemical Engineering. I intend to build a career in the oil and gas industry and i'm presently checking my options for a masters degree in that line. I came up with three choices and i need you opinion about them. They are:

1. Oil and Gas Engineering- Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.
2. Oil and Gas Enterprise Management- University of Aberdeen.
3. Petroleum Engineering- London South Bank University.

Cost wise, RGU>UA>LSBU but i need to know which is best based on the following.
[li]% graduate employability[/li]
[li]standard of facilities/education[/li]
Thank you.
Re: Best School For Masters Degree In The UK? by debosky(m): 5:19pm On Jan 07, 2009
University of Aberdeen would be my choice as a school.RGU is a tad too commercialized - focused on churning out many grads and maybe not focused on individual quality. It's better respected overall as Sagamite has said so that would be my choice. LSB would be a VERY RISKY choice in my opinion (school wise), it has little pedigree as a university in Oil and Gas.

What exactly is oil and gas enterprise management?

You need to be clear on what you want to do - this craze to do any course with the word 'oil' or 'gas' attached to it will not do us any good. Schools understand this craze and would fashion names that would entice people. Focus on content - what kinds of skills are you trying to develop? What modules are being taught? Will they be relevant to your desired career?

Don't fall for fanciful course names with little content - do indepth research and find out whether you'll be getting value for the expensive one year education you'll be paying for.

Regarding not making up your mind where you want to work, Sagamite has a point, but these guys who want to do oil and gas are trying to focus PRIMARILY on that area due to the belief that jobs are available.

Due to this craze, there are so MANY people doing such courses, many in less prestigious schools. It is HIGHLY competitive, so if you want to spend £10,000 (not including plane tickets and living costs) on a course, better go for the best damn one you can get.
Re: Best School For Masters Degree In The UK? by TheOne2(m): 1:12am On Jan 08, 2009
For oil and gas related courses in the UK:

1) If you are interested in studying petroleum engineering (for those that know this means strong reservoir and production engineering aspects i.e. subsurface) then it's either Imperial College or Heriot Watt University. These are the two centres of excellence for petroleum engineering in the UK(Imperial for England and HWU for Scotland). When it comes to petroleum engineering, these schools rank side by side for employers in the UK though Imperial is more popular to the layman in Nigeria. The oil industry in Nigeria also reckons with these two.

2) For surface production, process, facilities engineering etc, the above two and RGU etc are your best bets. RGU is not strong on the subsurface side but do very well in the areas I've mentioned.

Aberdeen is very good with subsea engineering, along with Cranfield University. For pipeline engineering, it should be Cranfield and Newcastle.

Summarily, a lot of people just say they want masters in oil and gas but don't specify which area and as such get the wrong advice

I ave options of Studying Petroleum Engineering(MSc) at Heriot Watt University or Petroleum Geophysics @ Imperial College. My choice is Petroleum engineering but Imperial will only give me geophysics. Please I need advice from house memebrs. I need to accept one of these offers soon and like every other dude I am looking at job opportunies after my programme.

Solomon, it depends.

If you are doing all this because you love Petroleum engineering like Jay-Z loves Beyonce and you want to spend the rest of your life kissing Petroluem Engineering and talking about all the drilling and exploration in ecstasy, then go to Heriot Watt.

But If you are doing all this because of the money and future prospects, don't even think about it, go to Imperial. The prestige is miles ahead as a university. If you decide you want to branch out from the day you graduate, it will be much easier if you went to imperial and you will be able to gain attention of recruiters for top jobs.

y do people think it is so easy getting a job in the oil sector? , it's a very competitive sector and grad jobs are scarce in the sector except u are exceptionally good, i mean an all round A student, u only stand a very good chance if u have some experience and must be specialized in a particular field in the sector.bout the idea of getting grad job in aberdeen or uk, the oil coy there will first consider their citizens and EU before even thinking of foreign grad(including naija, india, chinese, pakistans, bangladesh, west indies and other citizens of the world.), they will rather employ a british citizen or EU with a BEng in mechanical engr or msc from a university in the UK before even considering your msc in reservoir evaluation from herriot watt, or your subsea from cranfield embarassed
the best bet is complete your msc in petroleum over there and come and join the league of oil job seekers in nigeria, where u stand a better chance with your international degree, and even in nigeria, there are still so many people with msc in petroleum courses from overseas that u'll have to compete with.
but generally, much depends on God's favour, smiley

Why do students get stuck up with petroleum engineering when they can study offshore engineering?
Re: Best School For Masters Degree In The UK? by lucidang(m): 3:07am On Mar 20, 2009
1. It pays to review the school website thoroughly and read the course modules before making a choice on what to study in the UK.
2. I would strongly recommend speaking to people who have studied in the UK before for advice on the employment situation.
3. Draw up your career plan and speak to people in the industry (what ever industry) you are interested in to find out the key skills that are required and study for degrees that are along those paths. Everyone will have to make their own choices.

I am presently studying Subsea Engineering at the University of Aberdeen and i am enjoying myself because i am getting my money's worth. Some other people may feel differently about the school for their own personal reasons. My point here is to make rational decisions that are based on facts and free from all manner of subjectivity. It is your hard earned currency that you will be spending.

lucida_ng how are you doing, I just saw from ur post that u are currently a student of University of Aberdeen.

I am in dilenma here, I am torn between studying Offshore Engineering at Newcastle and Studying Safety Engineering at Aberdeen (with the aim of specialising in offshore) (I have admission for both) can u please give me an idea from your experience so far which one you will rather choose.
I will also like to know if the Global financial meltdown is taking its toll heavily on the industry as in is recruitment still going on.

I will also know if someone with like part of the fees and living cost from here will be able to work and make up for the rest over there,

If working there does not work how do you see a degree in Offshore Engineering from National University of Singapore (cheaper than the other 2 and very well rated even more then the other 2), how do they recieve graduates from this school in the industry.

Sorry I am bombarding you with all these questions, I just dont want to make one costly mistake, I want to get all my facts ready before I make a move.

Any other person with a good response will be highly appreciated.

thanks a lot.

Re: Best School For Masters Degree In The UK? by debosky(m): 5:06pm On Jun 22, 2009
energy futures is a very BROAD course - a generalist course.

The programme has been designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge of the technology required to ensure energy provision in the oil and gas industry.

I personally would NOT attend this course. Given that it's broad in nature, you might think it prepares you for a variety of roles (which I'm sure it does on a basic level). However, given the intense competition for jobs in general, I'd advise that you pick something with more of a focus.

This course would be ideal at an undergraduate level if the individual was still at a loss as to what specific area was best for him/her, with the option of later specialising, OR, for someone who will be MANAGING oil and gas projects and needs to know about diverse aspects (i.e someone already with some experience say in another industry hoping to transit into the oil industry or with previous oil experience seeking to move higher)

If you are a fresh grad, look for something more specialised, in line with your skills/abilities and career goals.
