What Have We Learned From Kenya Mall Atack? by mekaboy(m): 12:16am On Sep 24, 2013
We have all seen what happened in kenya mall. Most Nigerians condemn it but there is some out there who will be celebrating it, and wish to replicate the same in Nigeria.

The question is, what have we learned from this attack? And what do we do to prevent it from happening in Nigeria?

You contributions and suggestions are welcome.

the foreign news section is not d place 4 all dis joke and unreasonable comments, c'mon guys let's be serious.
bak to d topic, I believe we shoud hav securiy forces at standby at all times.
since terrorism is a global thing, plus d fact dat most terrorist groups attack unsuspected sites, it's not wise to believe dat certain places are tactical/strategic locations. however d keynote is dat our security forces should always be one step ahead.

Now you see this post. This has got to be one of the funniest post on nairaland since the inception of this forum. gringringringrin

Ironically, it is also a true statement.

1)To the topic. In truth, a tiny percentage, say 1%, if anything at all can be done to prevent such an attack in nigeria. A mall is a soft target, a school is a soft target, a church, a mosque, a viewing center were we gather every weekend to watch watches is a soft target. Multiple that number by 10 and extremists got 50 targets in a single city. You cannot have policemen guarding every one of the 50 targets, you'd have none to patrol the streets or. protect vital hard targets such as installations and government buildings.

2)Let us say the government deploys a policeman each to guard these 50 soft targets. He would be overrun multiple times by 15 determined attackers (using the kenyan mall attackers as an example) . As we can see it is of no use.

3)People would say intelligence agencies failed in their duties, again, it is wrong to make that assumption. This is because, with the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in africa, ak-47's are way easier to purchase than ever before. even if we had the CIA and the MOSSAD in nigeria, or kenya as it were, they still would not be able to stop the attack. It is still this same light arms proliferation that president GEJ, has been screaming his guts out for anytime he goes to the UN general assembly or when he has an important visitor like the UK prime minister or US president and vise versa. It is not an intelligence failure.

The 1% that would work in drastically reducing casualties figures, but not eliminate them is if the mall has it's own security lock-down system. This approach would minimise casualty figures for malls and perhaps schools, not for viewing centres and religious centres.

As we can see, there is virtually no stopping this sort of an attack. What we can only do is reduce casualty figures. In kenya official reports state that 62 people lost their lives, while shabab claims that it killed 137 people.

In this sort of an attack, response time is king. It is absolutely critical to respond very quickly. It is in this area were the kenyans failed. It took first responders a full 30 mins to get to the scene of the attack in a high-brow area, in the capital of kenya. Now, that's terrible. If such an attack were to take place in maitama or garki in abuja, 10 mins would be too long for the first set of policemen with 6-8 cops to be at the scene. With those policemen at the scene, they can now begin to engage the terrorists before back up in more cops, army, special forces and DSS would be at the scene.

So response time is absolutely critical. If the same attack were to have occurred in either abuja or lagos, it would only take the police 10 mins to be there after the first call. Quick Response time is the only way forward.

We are the GIANTS of Africa is nothing but a mere phrase. If what happened in Kenya happened here in Nigeria, it will be more devastating. Our security is not that good enough or should we just agree that saboteurs are too many in the security services. Also, those ruling us do not totally love us or the Nation, all they are interested in is looting the state treasury and also to be in power for life till death comes to take them. May God continue to guard and guide this Nation Nigeria in Jesus name.

When our security agencies are not proactive, what do you expect? When and if such thing happen in Nigeria, the magnitude of the attack would be devastating. We need to up our security agencies to be proactive and be able to counter terrorism.

That is unreasonable! Most terrorist are hiding under the umbrella of Islam, but not all muslims are terrorists!
I think u should share ur views to not be on the bases of religion, but reality. And to prove u wrong, there are a lot of muslims in Kenya, so how would u expect ur view to work?!

Sometimes I begin to doubt if some of you people have senses to reason with in your brains. This is the nonsense you spewed out.

Another typical nonsensical post. So in your small deluded mind, the soldiers fighting terrorism up north are only on vacation in the north-east of nigeria.

We learned that states threatened by terrorists should invest in robotics. A mini intelligent robot whose devices can easily identify and target with 99.99999% precision someone holding a gun or a knife would have knocked out these guys at the mall in less than 15 minutes. This would have saved lives and time.

Gud idea. However, even if 150million of these robots are used against terrorism, where would dey be deployed? govt houses? stadiums? viewing centres? markets?
The fact remains dat there are no tactical targets for terrorism, especially when the terror group has no reasonable demand or objective, eg Boko Haram.
Every/any location could be a target, and since security forces/agencies don't disclose there modus operandi against terrorism to d public, we as observing/responsible citizens can only advise dat security forces should always be 10 steps ahead of these terrorists.
