I'm going to answer you from my small knowledge.

A pharmacist is also a pharmaceutical chemist, because he/she knows pharmaceutical chemistry which is a core part of pharmacy, together with other core areas like microbiology, pharmacology and so on. So IMO, a pharmacist is also a pharmaceutical chemist because he studied pharmaceutical chemistry.

If someone is being referred to as a pharmaceutical chemist, most likely the person may have studied pharmaceutical chemistry as a single course, just as you see someone being called a pharmacologist beecause he studied just pharmacology. Hope you get it?


And yes, there'd be differences between someone who studied industrial chemistry and later switched over to pharmaceutical chemistry. A pharmacy graduate who specializes in pharmaceutical chemistry has his area of scope not limited to chemistry, but other core areas of pharmacy (pharmacology, microbiology, pharmaceutical technology, clinical pharmacy etc), while an industrial chemist who switches over to pharmaceutical chemistry will be solely limited to the chemistry part of pharmacy, which is like 1/6 of what pharmacy entails.

Such person is just a pharmaceutical chemist and not a pharmacist! He/she can never be licensed to practice pharmacy. He can only be a researcher in pharmaceutical chemistry, just like a Bsc pharmacology graduate can only be a researcher in pharmacology after getting trained up to PhD level and NEVER a pharmacist.
I think people who opt for any of the pharmaceutical sciences should know what it entails. They should not study those courses with the mindset that they are substitutes to pharmacists. The scope of training a pharmacist receives is far beyond what a Bsc graduate in any of the pharmaceutical sciences has.

If you are doing a Bsc in any of the pharmaceutical sciences, have it at the back of your mind that you are being trained to become a researcher/lecturer in those areas upon obtaining a PhD . If you are not okay with that, please write jamb and enroll for pharmacy to avoid heartbreaks. Peace
