Here are some amazing photographs of animals that died and got mummified in Lake Notron, Tanzania.

Tanzania’s Deadly Lake Natron Turns Animals Into Calcified Statues

Tanzania's Lake Natron is the most caustic body of water on Earth – and that makes it a terrifying, if eerily beautiful, place.

Lake Natron in northern Tanzania is named for a naturally occurring compound made of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate. The lake's high levels of natron come from volcanic ash from the Great Rift Valley, and they've given the water a very unusual side effect: Animals that die and are submerged in the lake are completely calcified and preserved like stone. Photographer Nick Brandt documented the lake's terrifying process, taking pictures of birds and bats that have appeared on the lake's shoreline.

The ominously colored pool takes its name from the naturally occurring salt-mixture that saturates its depths. Natron (the mineral) was once used by the ancient Egyptians as a drying agent in the mummification process; and in the hellish brine of its namesake, where temperatures reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and alkalinity levels fall in the aggressively inhospitable range of pH 9–10.5, it serves a similar purpose.

The water is so salty and full of salt-loving microorganisms, it's actually poisonous to many larger fauna, like hyenas. But astonishingly, the shallow lake, whose depths reach only about 10 feet, is the only breeding area in East Africa for 2.5 million Lesser Flamingoes, the smallest species of flamingo. The birds brave the unforgiving environment at Lake Natron, feeding off the blue-green algae that grow there and keeping safe from predators who avoid it.

Sometimes, salt islands form in the lake during evaporation. Flamingoes seize the opportunity to nest on these islands, but not without some risk involved. Some flamingoes inevitably die in the lake, and when they do, their bodies become calcified, and their carcasses look like tiny statues.

Other animals get stuck in the treacherous salt lake too.

His thread is obviously more detailed, but he failed to include d source of his article. His article wz plagiarized, unlike d oda guy dat gave credit to d original author. Again, he failed to explain how those animals took up those postures of living animals, even tho dey'r dead.
