Here is the solution, you can buy this phones locked to international networks such as AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Rogers, etc at reasonable prices (used or new). To get this phones locked is not much hassle as it seems. Mind you, you want to purchase a GSM (Global System for Mobile) as CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) has some technicalities to unlocking it. NOW to unlock your phone, post the following in this thread:
- phone brand (e.g iPhone 4, Nokia lumia 520, etc)
-phone's IMEI (International Mobile station Equipment Identity) which you can obtain by dialing #06# on any phone
-network carrier phone is locked to e.g. AT&T, Rogers, etc
- email address ( I'll post the unlock code and instruction to your e-mail)
And you are free to use your phone with any SIM.

UPDATE: iPhone unlock is no longer free, the price of unlocking it has been hiked, while some unlocking companies are not even unlocking it at all. Other phones like Samsung, Nokia, HTC, etc still available. Limited still.
