nadia_SA: residents claim they spotted two cops boozing just moments before they lost control of their van and smashed into a nearby gate!

The cops were allegedly drinking in a shebeen in Bronville’s extension 15 in Welkom, Free State.

But the warrant officer and sergeant had a different story, and said they were chasing a suspect after getting a tip-off when they crashed.

The police have now asked those who saw the cops drinking to come forward to help with investigations.

A witness who didn’t want to be named said: “They sat in the shebeen drinking and relaxing for more than an hour.

“I believe at the time of the accident they were going back to the Bronville Police Station.

“It’s a shame that our cops were drinking on duty and this is why we called the People’s Paper. We wanted to shame them.”

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said: “We are aware of the accident. What we know is that two of our members received a tip-off that a man in the area had an illegal firearm.

“They were chasing the suspect when they lost control of their vehicle and hit the gate. They were not injured and the van was towed away.

“The suspect managed to get away. We are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving, so if any residents saw them drinking they must come forward.

“Corrupt cops cannot be tolerated and the information will be much appreciated.”
